My skin is generally good, slightly oily at times but mostly spot free. I do have freckles though, and would sometimes like a bit of cover on them just to even it all out. 95% of the time I wear very little makeup (bit of mascara and a dash of something neutral on my lips) .

Does the bare minerals face powered stuff actually work, I'm a sucker for infomercials as I love the idea of being able to choose the level of coverage. Or will I be sadly disappointed?

Look here under Ingredients beginning of second line down. It says Dimethecone

I'm assuming its the loose powder you have??

MrsFlorrick · 19/09/2014 12:43

Babybarrister. Don't feel like a mug!!! Honestly. You have to read the ingredients to be sure. Sales people are clueless.

Besides. Cosmetics giants have spent the last decade hard selling the silicone co-polymers like dimethicone as being "beautifying and anti aging" none of which is true. And it's also being sold as a "skin barrier repair" product Hmm seriously!

It's a cheap filler that the cosmetics giants like because it adds adhesion and slip to their products.

My particular bugbear with the "cones" are that they are in absolutely flipping EVERYTHING. You'd be smothered in the stuff if you don't read labels. Shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, facial moisturisers, primer, sunscreen and makeup. Argh.

I'm obv very aware of it as I react badly to it. I didn't start out that way but by using multiple products daily laden with the stuff, I started to react.

When you're done with using the JI. Try Inika, Lily Lolo or Bellapierre. They really are silicone free. As are Green People but theirs has less coverage so only good if you're young or flawless anyway.

Silicones aren't all bad!

Unless you're allergic obvs!

It's up there with the mineral oil argument for me. Mineral oil is cheap and that's why it's used but it's not the work of the devil. Unless you're allergic that is!

callamia · 20/09/2014 23:09

MrsFlorrick, sorry for not replying sooner. I'm definitely interested in your advice. I'm a yellower skin, I think I was a BM medium.

I was interested to read about dimethacone - no7 does contain that, and I've had bouts of awful skin lately (prob hormone, but I'll try anything to keep it as clear as possible).

MrsFlorrick · 21/09/2014 18:49

Callamia. Cinnamon in Bellapierre. That should be perfect. If you're off on holiday and will be tanned Nutmeg will work for you too.

I'm yellow too but just slightly paler than you. Cinnamon only works for me when I'm very tanned. Ivory generally.

I never got on with the mineral powder foundation, but I love the Brightening Serum Foundation. It needs to be applied with a good foundation brush, but a little goes a long way, you can build coverage without caking, it has a very natural finish and it does last well.

ohmymimi · 21/09/2014 19:11

Sorry, should have made clear I'm referring to bare minerals.

callamia · 21/09/2014 22:49

Thank you! I shall try it out.

Ive justordered some lily lolo samples Smile would you say a kabuki brush is essential? I usually use a bb cream and just have an old big powder brush which i could substitute with. Would this be enough to test with the samples?

poorbuthappy · 22/09/2014 12:32

Can someone advise how much of the Lily Lolo to use? I tried my samples this morning and I don't think I put enough on. But I wasn't in a position to sit there and carry on for any longer. Think I've been a bit too cautious.

temporaryusername · 22/09/2014 18:03

I've just ordered some Lily Lolo samples too so I'd be interested to know the same. Mrs Florrick you should be getting some freebies from them for all the business you've sent their way!

MrsFlorrick · 22/09/2014 22:16

The kabuki brush is pretty much essential for good even coverage.

If you look on Lily Lolos website there are videos to help with application techniques.

I'm not the best at applying makeup so I like to watch utube vids on how to apply stuff.

ShebaQueen · 22/09/2014 22:22

I am a huge fan of mineral foundation, I've been using it for years and wouldn't go back to liquid foundation. I like both Bare Minerals and Lily Lolo - LL is brilliant value and I often buy BM when TSV on QVC, but my absolute favourite is Laura Geller Balance and Brighten. It is absolutely foolproof, it's solid so no mess and it gives good coverage whilst making my 50 year old skin look so much better.

beavington · 23/09/2014 20:28

Ah thanks. I remember seeing a kabuki brush for a really good price but can't for the life of me remember where! Looking forward to my lily lolo samples! Ive been using no 7 bb cream with no problems til i tried the boots botanics bb cream in the summer as recommended on mn. It made me break out quite bad and although ive since switched back to no 7 bb cream its just not clearing up. Would like a break from all the silicone products now while not displaying my spots, scars and freckles quite so blatantly.

poorbuthappy · 24/09/2014 16:23

Day 3 and I've come out in horrendous spots in places I don't usually get spots like on my cheeks. Shock
So 1 tester pot of porcelain and 1 tester pot of china doll free to a good home. All powder been tapped out as per instruction so no brushes have been in pots.
PM me.

beavington · 24/09/2014 21:42

My samples arrived today and ive quickly come round to realising i need a kabuki brush. My old no 7 brush felt like i was using sandpaper when buffing! I did it about 10 minutes ago and its still sore! Even my hot cloth cleanser doesnt do this! So any recommendations for a cheap but decent kabuki brush?

Sorry youve broken out poorbuthappy - hope it clears up quick! Did you use a kabuki brush? As the foundation is meant to be so kind to skin i wonder if youve used a metal scourer to apply it like it seems i have! Grin

beavington · 27/09/2014 11:57

Just thought id update as i know when ive searched old threads where everyone shoots out to buy something but then dont update afterwards are annoying!

So my experiences thus far! I ordered porcelein and blondie samples and have been trying them with an ordinary scratchy brush. Porcelein is very pale so it turns out im not as white as a sheet after all. Blondie is probably a good summer colour for me but after a few months in doors it contrasts with my neck a little.

Despite application with incorrect tools coverage is great, you can definitely always add more. Concealer would be necessary still for bad blemishes but im trying to avoid this to give my skin a bit of a break. Ive found the finish is a little powdery but im used to dewey finish that bb creams give you. I will be buying a kabuki brush from the body shop on monday to see how that improves things.

Overall i really like this product, im just hoping to get the colour and finish perfected. It has made me realise how good the no 7 bb cream is though. Color and finish were great its just i feel its hindered long term skin problems caused by a different boots product.
