My skin is generally good, slightly oily at times but mostly spot free. I do have freckles though, and would sometimes like a bit of cover on them just to even it all out. 95% of the time I wear very little makeup (bit of mascara and a dash of something neutral on my lips) .

Does the bare minerals face powered stuff actually work, I'm a sucker for infomercials as I love the idea of being able to choose the level of coverage. Or will I be sadly disappointed?

Temporary. No not glittery in the least matte and soft focus on skin.

Lily Lolo is also matte.

Inika is more glowy than the above two.

temporaryusername · 15/09/2014 16:02

Thanks Mrs Florrick, sounds tempting...Smile

Bare Minerals made me look about 20 years older. It settled nicely into my wrinkles, accentuating them, and made my pores look huge. It "drifted" around my jowls, drawing attention to them. And I looked orange.

However... I recently trialled their new BareSkin and it was absolutely brilliant. You put a few drops on the brush and swirl it round your skin - you can use more drops for more coverage. I would really recommend it (or at least trying it). Also be sure you get the shade right - it comes up very dark. I have medium skin and ended up with "Cream", which I thought was much too light, but it worked, and blended in really well.

Safmellow · 15/09/2014 18:33

I have tried Pure Magic Minerals and Mineral Hygienics (you can buy them on Amazon/E-bay) and they were both pretty good. I find a brush messy too so I use a round flocked sponge and buff it really well.

Lol Grin
I'm not paid by bare minerals !
It just worked for me which is a relief as at 37 years of age and many ££££ wasted I finally have a product that I can rely on .

callamia · 17/09/2014 08:03

I'm using the No7 mineral powder, and it's much nicer than BM. I found BM quite orange, this is much more natural looking and provides very good coverage. There's only one shade, but it works great for me - and I think it's supposed to be fairly universal for caucasian skin tones.

I'd like to try Bellapierre, but I'm always put off by the fact that I can't shade match first.

mommathatwearspink · 17/09/2014 08:11

I wasn't keen on Bare Minerals at all. It made me look old and full of lines (I'm only 24 Hmm)
I definitely regret spending £150 on it Blush

Twotallladies · 17/09/2014 08:15

BM is the ONLY thing that has ever irritated my skin. Was very disappointed. As the day went on, my face got itchier and itchier....odd.

Greenstone · 17/09/2014 08:17

I'm a total lily lolo devotee, I wish they would pay me! Never tried BM but I've used lily lolo for about 6 or 7 years. I buy one tub of Porcelain and one of Blondie and shake them together in a lunchbox to get my perfect shade. I buff it mostly into my t zone and cheeks and leave anywhere that doesn't need it alone. Skin is combination and can be spotty, very pale with freckles.
I love the idea of the perfect bb cream or liquid foundation and am always tempted to buy nice ones, but lily lolo covers so flawlessly and is very gentle. It and some cream blusher are my absolute essentials that I'd panic if I didn't have.

MrsFlorrick · 17/09/2014 14:34

Cal lamia. If you can hold in till after DC go to bed I can help you with Bellapierre shade. Just post if you are a pink or yellow undertone.

Greenstone. Lily Lolo have started doing a BB cream. Not tried it.

cardigal · 17/09/2014 17:55

MrsFlorrick Bellapierre foundation sounds great. If I'm 'fairly light' in Bare Minerals what would you recommend? I like the idea of the compact one in Bellapierre for ease of use.

I use Bare Linen in the new BM liquid foundation and Nude in LM tinted moisturiser.

Much appreciated :)

cardigal · 17/09/2014 17:56

I have a neutral skintone, pale olive.

MrsFlorrick · 17/09/2014 20:35

Gardigal. Ivory would work. I am similar. I use mostly Ivory but Cinnamon when very tanned (think 2 weeks in the Maldives not British summer tanned Wink).

If we have a very long winter like the one 2 years ago, it's possible I would need to resort to Ultra by the end of it. Not sure though.

I've got the compacts as well in cinnamon and ivory. It's odd I find the compact ever so slightly darker than the the loose powder. May be my imagination.

I buy mine from Naturissimo. They have 25% off on Bellapierre.

I've used Lily Lolo in the past and its good. Bellapierre have better coverage and is a true all in one so you don't need seperate concealer or finishing powder. Just a brush and concealer brush.

temporaryusername · 17/09/2014 20:36

I'm feeling a bit paranoid that my bare minerals makes me look very old now. Although today I wore some liquid foundation, and initially was relieved to see that made me look old too, so it couldn't be the bare minerals - then I realised that was not good news!!

Re. the ageing effect, is it the mineral powder or specifically bare minerals?

MrsFlorrick · 17/09/2014 21:55

You need to set the minerals with a spritz of water or toner if you prefer. You can make your own for nothing with boiled water and a spray bottle or buy the mini bottles of Avene facial spritz in Boots (£1.5 each a bottle lasts me months).

It not only helps it last all day but gives it a sort of airbrushed look.

You spritz after applying mineral makeup obv.

Why it works so well I've no idea.
Oh and if you have dry skin, also a quick spritz before applying mineral make up (and again after) stops your skin drying out.

cardigal · 18/09/2014 08:47

Thanks mrsflorrick :)

Fabulassie · 18/09/2014 08:56

I used to have great success with BM in my early 30's. Then I tried it again at 44 and it gave me big, dry pores. But! The lady recommended that I try their night treatment. This is an odd product - it's BM powder that you wear to bed. They claim it does good things for the skin but I have no idea what or how. The point is, I can wear it for daytime foundation and it looks really, really good. It looks like I'm not wearing any makeup at all.

However, I have tried their new liquid foundation and I'm hooked on it. It really is the perfect foundation for me.

I like BM for trying something different - their products won't work for everybody but they can work brilliantly.

Greenstone · 18/09/2014 09:29

Thanks for the reminder MrsFlorrick -- I noticed that a while ago and thought 'ooooh' but when it comes to make-up I am trying out the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' method for now. I have wasted so much money on foundations and BB creams, you wouldn't believe it. Just can't resist some glam packaging, and I wouldn't mind but Lily LoLo is really cheap compared to most of the products I buy and don't use!

that said if anyone wants to come and tell me it is great I will listen

cardigal · 18/09/2014 09:36

I've just been looking for the Bellapierre and it's nearly £40. (Only 'ultra' avail on Naturissimo at 25% off)

Now, I'm not adverse to spending a small fortune on something that works but as greenstone just reminded me (great timing!) my current foundations are doing just great.

Gah! I'm such a sucker for the 'next best thing'!

Have put it on my amazon wishlist and will try it when I've used up my current loose BM (unless I've found something else to tease me by then!

Thanks :)

MrsFlorrick · 18/09/2014 09:55

Cardigal. Email Naturissimo and ask when your shade will be back in stock. Last time I did that they had it in that very day for order.

And agreed. I wouldn't pay £40 for foundation. Even when I worked I wouldn't (tight arse).

For me its about fewest ingredients. I suffer from rosacea and have a very sensitive face. Almost everything in the way of moisturisers and cleansers irritate. And makeup.
The few that don't are BP, LL and Inika. I oil cleanse and use oils instead of moisturisers. That's the only way my face stays calm.

Someone mentioned Jane Iredale up thread. All her foundations inc the loose powder contains diemethecone. That stuff is like cryptonite for me. Severe irritation and bumpy rash which turns into large puss filled spots. Not just on face but anywhere on my body.

Then again why would anyone want to use products with dimethecone I don't know. Why smother yourself in something which is two ingredients away from bathroom sealant/mastic (solvent and white vinegar).

Happydutchmummy · 18/09/2014 12:11

I'm back with an update!

MrsFlorrick, thanks so much for your advice and explanation of what bm contains.

I have got myself some testers from lily lolo and I ? LOVE ? it. My skin loves it, it stays on my face all day, it does t even look like I'm wearing any foundation just gives me perfect skin. Squealing with joy.

Kind of. Diemethecone is a silicone. Which means the makeup isn't silicone free. Some people get on well with silicones. However there is growing evidence that they are not great for your skin (it coats the skin and imagine what happens with that silicone coating in bright sunlight on a summers day?).
There are links to acne and a number of skin irritations.

The cosmetics industry loves silicone (there are many). It's an ultra cheap filler which helps product "stick" to skin and creates smoothness and evenness in the product itself

Even if I didn't react to diemethecone, I wouldn't use products with silicones as it's only been in use for less than a decade and those using it are walking guinea pigs.

Babybarrister. Plenty of excellent products without "cones".

MrsFlorrick · 18/09/2014 12:49
