Makeup - where do I start ??

mumtosp · 09/09/2014 20:51

Hello Beauty Gurus !

I have recently been thinking about starting to use makeup, but have no idea where to start. YouTube has loads videos on how to apply makeup, but I really need advice on what to buy!? Right now I am feeling overwhelmed with all the products out there (what the he'll is a primer and do I need one ! ) Confused

I am 30 and have combination skin (oily T zone but no dryness anywhere else ) I am Indian with brown skin.. Occasional breakouts.. fairly wrinkle free till now (touchwood) Suffer from dark circles...
Till now all I have is a double wear foundation sample which unfortunately isn't an exact match for my skin tone Sad

Any recommendations on where to start would be great ! Thanks Smile

Pop to your nearest Bare Minerals counter and ask them to 'do you over'. Debenhams generally have them.

Fabulassie · 09/09/2014 21:58

Yup. Bare Minerals is a good place to start for the foundation and concealer side of things.

Perhaps try another counter for eyes - Bobbi Brown is an excellent line with good, neutral colours.

Fabulassie · 09/09/2014 21:59

And for lipstick... you don't have to spend a lot of money on them. Perhaps try No 7 at boots if you want someone to put some shades on you. Also, go ahead and try the really, really cheap brands. You can just see if you like the colours without a big investment. If you do like the colours, you can find a similar shade in a better brand. Or, really, just go ahead with the cheap ones. There's not a huge difference in lipsticks.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/09/2014 22:04

YY - see Bare Minerals IRL to get your colour, then have a look on QVC. They don't carry the full colour range, but you might find your colour in there.
They do lots of 'kits' . I got a foundation, concealer, mineral veil and a double sided brush.

For make-up, I bought a Sleek blusher, then an eye shadow pallette. Then another one. Then two lip palettes.
It's all I need WRT eye colours.

Eyebrows - make a huge difference. I have Benefits Brow-Zing but there's good reviews for Ama-zing brow.

Mascara - I;m still searching for my Holy Grail (there's a couple I love but not 100% perfect)

Thanks all... I'll let you know how I get on Smile

The only thing I'd suggest with Bare Minerals is that you ask for samples before committing to buying it. I turned out to be allergic to something in it, and I found several threads where other people had the same experience. If it works for you, it's wonderful. But I would definitely give it a proper test out. A main trigger seems to be when the wearer gets hot, so try wearing it at the gym/walking the dog, etc.

PeppermintInfusion · 10/09/2014 12:03

Bobbi brown for eye makeup/lipstick definitely, plus they will give you a lesson in eye makeup/certain looks if you ask them.

Deathraystare · 10/09/2014 13:33

Ok you may have already purchased stuff by now. However, thought I would add my 10P worth....

Others have already advised you on foundation and as singing silver says - try to get samples and 'test drive' them. No point getting a foundation that looks flawless for 30 minutes then oxidises (goes darker and patchy) or runs down your face when you are cooking, doing laundry, rushing to the shops, chasing toddlers etc.

Concentrate on just getting a foundation for now but you can always go back for it (after test driving it). If they do a full face on you they will give you details of what make up used. You do NOT have to buy the whole lot or even anything if you don't want to.

If you are going to be one of those people who only makes up to go out then maybe later on experiment with a cheapish eye shadow palette (look in Superdrug - various cheap brands). But check the pigment of the colours. Nothing too chalky against your skin.

A number of brown skinned asians have dark cicles under their eyes. If this is you and it bothers you, you need to make sure that either the foundation or a concealer covers this. Probably better to rely on a separate concealer or it means your foundation will be very covering and could look like a mask.

mumtosp · 10/09/2014 13:53

Deathraystare thanks... that was very helpful ! I will be starting with some foundation and mascara first... need to go check out some brands..

First off, I'd suggest figuring out what you would like to achieve with the makeup - do you want to hide dark circles, bags, even out your skin tone, get some colour on your lips/eyes, look more awake or something else?

Do you want an everyday look or a party look or an everyday look that you can make into a party look without having to buy loads of extra stuff?

How easy would you like it to be to apply?

When you go to a shop or counter without any ideas of what you're looking for, it's very easy to buy way too much and to get products that aren't really what you really wanted.
So if you have an idea of what you want to do with the makeup, you can describe this to the sales person who can suggest products for you.

What is your budget and do you have any makeup brushes already?

If you need brushes, I'd suggest a foundation brush (if going for a liquid foundation, Real Techniques Expert Face Brush is awesome), a Mac 217 eye shadow brush and a blusher brush. You can always buy more later.

I'd suggest getting a light to medium coverage foundation. Ask for samples so you can try it at home and so you can see how it looks on your skin during the day. Mac do not give out samples, but they will apply it on your face for you so you can test it like that. I like Estee Lauder Double Wear Light, Laura Mercier oilfree tinted moisturiser and Diorskin Nude. I have oily, dehydrated skin, oily mainly in the T-zone and find that these foundations work really well for me.

A pressed powder is nice for touchups, especially if you have oily/combination skin. I like Mac Select Sheer Pressed and Mac Mineralize Skinfinish Natural. The first comes with a powder puff, the other one I'm not sure about as they've recently changed the packaging.

A good mascara - they come in all price ranges.

A blusher - I'd suggest asking for a recommendation at the counter. Mac has a great selection and they really give good advice on which colours are good.

A lip product if you want it - whatever you like. Red lipstick, berry, neutral, gloss, matte lipstick, stain or anything else.
If you just want to try different things, you could start with cheaper brands and when you find the type of colour you like, you can then buy more expensive products if you want.
Revlon Colorburst Matte Balms are matte lipsticks, I really like them and feel they compare well to more expensive brands.

I don't know what kind of eyeshadow colours you like, but I would suggest having a look at a Paint Pot (cream eyeshadow) from Mac called Indianwood. It's a gorgeous shimmery bronze that can be worn as a light wash of colour or a bit more for a party like look. It looks great just with mascara and a neutral lip colour but also amazing with eyeliner and red lipstick.

For cheaper blushers and eyeshadows, Sleek are very good, but they are very pigmented, so you have to use a very light hand when applying.

Carpaccio thanks for taking the time out for replying in detail ! Smile

To answer your questions... I am after an everyday look that can be made into a party look... easy to apply as I don't have much time in the mornings... I have a few brushes but want to invest in new good quality ones...

I will be going to a Bare Minerals and BB counter later in the week, but today I just popped into Boots and went to the No. 7 counter... they used their gizmo and said I am 'deep honey'. They applied their lightest foundation on me (they said I don't need a lot of coverage) but it didn't look right... So they concluded that their machine ne got it wrong and I need to be a shade lighter (warm sand)... So they picked another No. 7 foundation as the previous one didn't have a lighter shade...

It looked fine when they put it on, but I feel it doesn't look natural. Also, when I was talking on my phone I noticed my phone screen was covered in a layer of foundation... surely that sholdn't happen ! Shock

It's a good thing I didn't buy any... Will try the samples and see how I get on...

Oh and they had to put poser over the foundation as foundation alone made my face look very greedy...

Will a BB cream be more suited for me ?

So many question ! Confused

I did buy a No. 7 mascara Smile
Liked how it looked and since it was under a tenner I wouldn't feel very bad if I don't get on with it..

Thanks again everyone !

It sounds like the No 7 experience wasn't quite right. One good thing about Bare Minerals is that the stuff doesn't really rub off on anything.

I tell you something: if at all possible, take a small mirror with you and step outside to see yourself in natural light. Especially for foundation.

Fubsy · 10/09/2014 20:16

The No7 gizmo recommended a too yellow foundation for me, unfortunately it was also the lightest shade, so I had to go a tiny bit darker to get one that was neutral enough.

Its not infallible - definitely need to get samples, and try them in different lights - what looks great in the bathroom mirror with the light on might look awful in bright daylight.

Amrapaali · 10/09/2014 21:32

If you have only occasional breakouts and are fairly wrinkle-free, then you may not even NEED foundation.

Have you thought about tinted moisturizers? Soap and Glory works well for me- I am Indian and have oily, pimple-prone skin. A radiance balm or maybe a translucent BB cream?

Set with mineral powder. When using colour, go for plum, burgundy or deep pink for lips and cheeks. I have just sussed out dark pink really suits earthy, brown skin.

Start with the basics- foundation if you are keen on one, a good lipstick, creamy eyeliner. When you are happy with these, work your way up to primers, serums and all the other thingamajigs.

TiggyD · 10/09/2014 21:37

I suggest getting a makeover/ make up lesson from a professional. You'll get so many great tips and advice.

mumtosp · 10/09/2014 23:14

Amrapali thanks for the tip on colours Smile

TiggyD any suggestions on where I can go for a makeover ?

OP posts:
Fabulassie · 11/09/2014 07:29

Any makeup counter will do one, but they will be hard selling their particular products and no telling how good they will really be. I think you can Google makeup artists in your area. Most of them market for bridal/special occasion stuff but if someone is experienced in makeup I think they'd be good for giving a general makeover/lesson. And they probably try out a lot of different brands and can give you their opinions on where to go.

In the meantime, I think you might really like a makeover with Bobbi Brown. They really go in for a conservative, natural look so they won't alarm you with a disco clown look or anything.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 11/09/2014 09:31

I really like bobbi brown for foundation and concealer. As others said they are very good with a natural look. I have never tried bare minerals and perhaps I should!

My advice about makeup would be to experiment. You need a good foundation to match your skin colour and there is already lot of advice here. But I wouldn't spend a lot do all the other stuff. Like lipstick, blusher, eyeshadow etc. I usually go to the self serve booths in super drug and boots and buy whatever colour I fancy. That way I can try out so many more combinations and looks. Brands like MUA, Rimmel, maybelline etc.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 11/09/2014 09:34

Also I think Indians have quite defined and thick brows isn't it? I'm Chinese and I won't use any eyebrow products. They all make me look like a clown. If you think it's a bit messy, how about get an appointment for threading at a beautician.

mumtosp · 11/09/2014 12:38

Just came back from the bare minerals counter and the results are much better :) The lady at the counter used a powder foundation...unfortunately they didn't have any samples so I'll just have to see how I look by the end of the day...

OneLittleToddlerTerror I get my eyebrows threaded regularly... I am very particular about the kind of shape I like :)

Tomorrow it's bobbi brown day... wish me luck :)

Fabulassie · 11/09/2014 13:54

I'm glad you had a better experience with BM. I wouldn't expect them to have samples of the powder. Luckily today is somewhat warm so you should hopefully get an idea of what it wears like if you get a bit sweaty or oily.

I used it when I was younger but when I got older I tried it again and it seemed to magnify the pores on my cheeks. So, I tried their night treatment (yes, they have a powder for wearing at night) and it was like magic. I have also tried their brand-new liquid foundation and was very impressed.

Deathraystare · 12/09/2014 14:15

Mumtosp - that encounter at Boots just emphasises what I said about test driving. If you had bought that foundation and then found it transfered to the phone.... Just imagine how it would transfer to other people if you hug and kiss them. A lady called Angie on youtube (Hot and flashy) often tests foundation and complains of the phone transfer thing.

mumtosp · 12/09/2014 19:52

So today was Bobbi Brown day... and I have to say it is the only foundation I am thinking of buying Smile

The bare minerals ones from yesterday went a bit ashy later during the day...

The lady at the BB counter used the foundation stick instead of their liquid foundation as the liquid one would have been too heavy for me... she used a brush to apply some on areas where I have a few blemishes and didn't use much on the rest of the face... it has given me a natural dewy look... a bit of an extra shine, but better looking than bare minerals...

again no sample Sad
but I did get a sample for their bb cream which I am going to try tomorrow...

they also put some concealer for my dark circles, but it's all gone cakey and looks bad after a few hours... so I don't think I'll be buying their concealer...

speaking of dark circles, can anyone recommend an eye cream that will lessen them ? I don't use any eye cream at the oment and was anyways wanting to add one to my routine...

Thank you all again !! Grin
