Can't get to hairdresser, need stylish hair

DH and I are going out to a concert tomorrow night. Somewhere in my head I thought I'd manage to get to the hairdresser. But that was never an option so I don't know where I got that idea.

I'm dreadful at doing things with my hair, but I really feel I need it to look nice, so any ideas would be great.

It's dark, just past my shoulders, wavy with a few layers. It looks fantastic blow dried straight but I'm completely incapable of doing it myself. It also looks great dried in a plait and then let out into waves - for about 3 seconds until there's a tiny breeze or a bit of damp, at which point it turns into a fuzzy tangly mess.

My default hairstyle is a bun.

I have various pins, clips and hairspray. I could probably swing by somewhere to pick up extra products if needed. I will be able to wash my hair tomorrow morning and put it in a plait to dry, but that is all I will have time for until about 4pm. And we leave the house at 5.30.

Does anyone have any ideas what I should do with my hair? This concert is a massive deal for DH (childhood heroes) and we don't get out a lot, so I wanted to make a real effort, but somehow the time got away from me.

I would say that you need to learn how to blow dry it yourself. I learnt recently and it has made a huge difference to how it looks. It thought would take longer but overall its quicker as I am happier with it.

What about getting the Babyliss Big Hair Dryer thingy. It is brilliant and a GHD straightener.

vvviola · 02/09/2014 11:50

Yes, I probably do need to learn. And when I get a bit of time I'll probably have another go. I have straighteners but they only seem to make my hair frizzy.

But I don't think I'll manage to learn in the next 18 hours.

When you do the plait thing do you put product on first?

Dudess · 02/09/2014 11:55

Morning.

For a quick style (I have shoulder length, blonde, frizzy hair) I -
Wash and condition in the morning.
Add serum and/or a mouse for smooth volume.
Leave it to dry naturally by clipping in half-up/half-down style.

Throughout day, 'fluff-dry' hair. By mid-afternoon it's almost dry.
I either re-clip up with a giant clip in half-up/half-down style with a flattering beehive look at the front, or I take two small sections above my ears and twist, securing at the back with a big clip or grips.

Best make-up, best frock, best smile; best quick night-out look for a gig.

Enjoy!

PS - who are the childhood heroes?

SirChenjin · 02/09/2014 12:04

How about looking at some of the updo instructional videos on Youtube? There's a good one - quick and easy

A half up half down style always gets me lots of compliments and is easy to do. You need to use product to stop the frizzy and some volume mouse is always good. A little back combing and some hair spray and just pin it up at the back. Lots of tutorials on you tube

Makingdoo - I don't usually use product, but I have done before in an attempt to reduce the frizz.

Dudess & others - drying my hair like that would lead to a ball of frizz unfortunately - but shall have a look at the videos about half up half down (does it not tend to look a bit schoolgirl-ish?)

the childhood heroes are Queen

www.amazon.co.uk/Remington-S8590-Keratin-Therapy-Straightener/dp/B008BDSZE6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1409666683&sr=8-2&keywords=remington+pro+keratin

These are great. So much better than GHDs.
I've coverted all my friends.
My sister has the curliest hair ever and even she can get straight hair with these.
Bargain right now on Amazon.
As in Argos they are still 90 quid!!!
Might have to treat myself to a new pair actually.

hellsbellsmelons · 02/09/2014 15:12

Converted LOL!!!

Carpaccio · 02/09/2014 15:33

How about a side bun?

Or a twisted side braid?

Or a ponytail tuck?

JeniJones · 02/09/2014 17:12

Have you tried Babyliss big brush dryer .? It gives you a professional hair blow out in half an hour

littlewhitebag · 02/09/2014 17:18

Is this a concert as in nice theatre and sitting down and listening? Or is it a gig as in standing up, jumping around and beer spilling everywhere?

If it is the first then pay attention to the above posts.

If it is the latter then you really don't need to concern yourself about your hair. It really won't matter!

vvviola · 02/09/2014 19:55

It's concert as in massive stadium concert with access to some sort of VIP area. But seeing as it's Queen, I'm not expecting sitting down and polite applause Grin

I'm looking through all the ideas now - thanks!

It sounds excellent. You will be in the presence of some of the greatest hair in the business - i wouldn't worry too much about your own! In fact i would say that you should absolutely let your hair down Grin.

SirChenjin · 02/09/2014 20:47

I second the Babyliss Big Hair. I'm obsessed with mine - it transforms my thick, wavy, coarse hair into a swishy, shiny barnet. I think magic and unicorns are involved somehow. The best forty quid you will ever, ever spend.

littlewhitebag · 02/09/2014 20:49

Yes, yes to the Babyliss Big Hair. I get a salon perfect bob very time.

Dudess · 02/09/2014 20:55

I love my Babyliss, but if you're seeing Queen you'll be hot and sweaty in no time! John Freida serum fixes my frizz for the day. Although by the next day I need a restyle.

Could you put back into a sleek and wet pony tail?

Safmellow · 02/09/2014 21:11

Deconstructed bun using spin pins?

vvviola · 02/09/2014 22:33

The only time my hair ever does properly sleek is after a long session at the hairdresser! But the more I hear about the Big Hair the more interested I am (I'd never even looked at it before as with lots of coarse wavy hair, the last thing I needed was bigger hair!!).

Hair is now washed and in a bun for work. I'll be making a decision later on what to do. I'm tempted to leave it down with plenty of anti-frizz stuff, but have the bits and pieces to do one of the simple updos in my bag in case of misbehaving hair.

Of course, when I get home from work it'll probably be totally misbehaving already Hmm

JeniJones · 03/09/2014 00:04

The Big Hair usually gives it the sleek smoothness of a salon blow out. Does for me anyway. You can leave your hair to dry naturally and then when its almost dry and dry you can just use it for 5 mins and it will smooth it nice and glossy.

singaporeswing · 03/09/2014 02:53

I am loving the tip I saw on here the other day, where you bring all of your hair forward in a front ponytail and then curl sections of the ponytail.

Gives you amazing, natural looking curls/waves in about 5 mins.

I use hair straighteners to curl it as I don't have a curling wand, but either would do.

vvviola · 03/09/2014 23:01

I'm afraid I let you all down.... Sad

Hair was still a bit damp when I got home. Attempted curls with ghd. Didn't hold properly. Tried pinning it up, it just looked a bit frumpy.

So I brushed it out added loads of anti-frizz stuff and figured it couldn't be bigger or fluffier than Brian May's hair.

DH said I looked lovely but then he has to say that

I'm pretty sure by the end of the night I was giving Brian May a run for his money. But we were 8 rows back, the show was outstanding, and frankly, by the time they started singing "Another Bites The Dust" (about 3 songs in), I frankly couldn't have cared if someone had put my hair into a Mohawk!

In penance I will look into the price of the Big Hair thing over here (may have to sell an organ)

and I now have a bit of a schoolgirl crush on Adam Lambert

Queen?! Without Freddie Mercury that's not Queen. Glad you had a good time though.
