Curvista's - A wardrobe AW14/15 planning thread

adviceforme · 14/08/2014 16:54

Hello

I really enjoyed reading a curvy summer wardrobe thread a couple of months back, so I thought I'd see if anyone is up for an autumn/winter wardrobe planning thread.

I'm nearly 40 and never sure what I should be wearing anymore. Coupled with a few post DS wobbles and...lets say new shapes to deal with, I find I am struggling.

Are there any other MNetters who would like to join me in planning for AW14/15? We could share links, advice on shapes/colour/bargains/accessories and even trends from blogs.

Smile

The raven one is the one I have - do report back your views when it arrives.

MrsSchadenfreude · 20/08/2014 11:34

I thought the Must Have needed a Good Bra to lift my saggy sacks up to where they (should) belong, and even with industrial bra, still had a slight whiff of pregnancy around the stomach area (but not excessively so - wearable, but would have meant I sucked my stomach in when I thought about it). I think I am better in something a bit more fitted.

What did you hate about the Emma dress, Singing?

I find that Boden dresses (and tops) don't entirely cater for those with bosoms - the bosom takes up the fabric, which then makes the waist too high. I have one of the Emma tops that I am constantly pulling down to get the waist in the right place.

Just marking my place- am nearly 50, size 14 with no waist and no idea what to wear. I have no money, so tend to buy on ebay or in charity shops. I have nothing to wear that suits me, although have just bought m&s lift and sculpt jeans with birthday money that are a nice fit.

Struggle with tops, as I like long tops, but can never find ones I like.

polyhymnia · 20/08/2014 12:21

Agree eyebrow tinting a good idea, if your brows are at all pale - always have mine done and helps give definition to my face.

Also wear glasses some of the time and, again, go for a great frame, as my face is big enough to take quite bold ones. Think of getting best possible frame in same way as getting really good bra (recommend Prima Donna) and best possible haircut. Those things are with you whatever you wear.

McFox · 20/08/2014 12:27

I'm in - I'm almost 40 with a 10 week old DS. I'm about a size 16 hourglass.

I normally dress in 40s/50s styles and never wear trousers but these dresses don't lend themselves to breastfeeding or an expanded waist!

I've discovered ASOS curve recently and I love their own brand skinny jeans, they are so comfortable and flattering with a belly skimming top. I've not owned jeans since the 90s so this is a major event for me Smile

MrsSchadenfreude · 20/08/2014 12:27

Thanks - I'll have a look at Pepperberry next time I'm in the big Bravissimo.

I agree re bootcut jeans - they can look quite frumpy. Per Una Blush jeans are good if you are an apple shape. They do some which are plain and don't have the random diamante spattered over the arse.

Also agree re confidence, good hair cut/colour and make up.

kahori · 20/08/2014 12:48

I have had mixed success with Boden dresses. I have one that I really like but I bought 2 very reduced dresses in a sale months ago and neither are quite right. I can't decide whether to get them altered or sell them on.

I've had better success with Pepperberry. I have this and is is very flattering on purple dress . It is a bit of a departure from my usual style but I love it.

I love White Stuff and have 3 dresses and 3 tunics I found new with tags on ebay.

kahori · 20/08/2014 12:53

I like the shape of the Must have Boden tunic but I can't justify €89 for it.

I bought some great jeans in Next a few months ago. They are from this range and are extremely flattering on. I have them in the dark blue bootcut and they really slim and lengthen my legs and the high waist holds everything in. jeans

mamijacacalys · 20/08/2014 14:19

These Fly Yust boots are a success, am happy to report. Got dark brown but may get the dark red later on. I know Fly are a bit marmite but never had a pair before and have to say they are very comfy! Smile They aren't up to my knees though, approx. 3'' below. That's why I think I have difficulty with knee high boots - my calves are both long and wide!
Agree re Boden Emma dress from last year - looked totally weird on me - too much material crossing over the front that emphasised boobage rather than flattered.
Thanks for the Next jeans link, am off to check out Smile.

MrsPnut · 20/08/2014 21:09

Those boots are lovely, I spend so much time trying to find just the right pairs.

Do the next jeans have front pockets? I bought a lift and shape pair from next and the front pockets were fake ones which were so annoying. I have some sexy high waisted ones from next which I adore, the high waist makes so much difference.

spookyskeleton · 20/08/2014 21:26

I have the high waisted Next jeans, both straight leg and boot cut, and they do totally eliminate any muffin top which is great Grin not keen on the bootcut now though!

spookyskeleton · 20/08/2014 21:27

There are some lovely dresses on the Pepperberry site but I really do not need any more dresses but I am so tempted...

kahori · 20/08/2014 22:30

The Next jeans don't have front pockets, i think the idea is to remove bulk around the stomach area. I think my bootcut are quite slim ones. I keep meaning to order them in a different cut, must really get around to that soon.

BeCool · 22/08/2014 13:47

Hello - I'm 18/20, age 47, work FT but I can wear what I like to work.
2 young DC (6 & 3) and starting to get back to paying more attention to how I dress. I'd also like to start dating soon and perhaps got for job iv's so really need to boost my wardrobe/image a bit.

I've just brought 2 Nicola Quilter skirts (arrived today) and I love them. Slightly quirky! I don't need to buy too much else for AW this year but I do need some grey and black tops to got with them:

www.nicolaquilter.com/products-page/long/long-eye-spy
www.nicolaquilter.com/products-page/long/long-autumn

What I am mostly looking for is a pair of knee high boots for bigger calf's - I'm not keen on Du (very expensive and quality not all that). I don't want to buy Evans for the opposite reason - too cheap quality.

I love the FLY boots, but they don't look very big in the calf area.

BeCool · 22/08/2014 13:47

DUO!

mamijacacalys · 22/08/2014 14:05

BeCool The Fly Yust's have a lace up bit at the back of the calf, as well as a full zip, hence why I have found success for my chunky calves I think!
I also have the 2 seasons ago equivalent of these M&S Autograph boots which are good for calves due to the elastic as well as the zip, and which have lasted well.
HTH Smile

BeCool · 22/08/2014 14:10

I will take a look at the M&S one thanks - I think my calves would be too big for Fly, but I will look out for them. Might need to go to Westfield soon.

kahori · 23/08/2014 20:10

Hi all, has anyone any recent purchases to show us? I got near some shops today but as DH and children were in tow I didn't actually manage to do any actual shopping for me.

I'm on the lookout for footwear to wear on a couple of nights out for my 40th. I'm hindered by the fact that I have wide feet and am crap in high heels but being short I need the height.

What do you think of these clarks ?

Clarks wide fit are good on me and I think with the platform I could just manage the heel height. Would they work with dresses & opaques or are they too daytime/officey? Also do shoe boots work with skinny jeans? I can't really picture it.

travailtotravel · 24/08/2014 14:08

I think I have found my spiritual home Grin

I had a wardrobe tidy out yesterday and worked out what I need for this year. I am a pear/apple and wear anything from an 18 to a 24 depending where I shop but I guess am midding at about 20/22. I lost a lot of weight this passt year (at least a dress size) which is good as I can now get back into some things that were tight. I am determined to lose more but realistic about doing it slowly.

I work at home, or with clients - so need to cover everything from slobby (totally got that covered!) to just shy of top-end smart. I guess I am an autumn or winter (brown hair, brown eyes, suit greens blues, purples and pinks - but blue based tones not yellow based tones).

Anyway, I needed black trousers (wide leg suit me quite well) as these are the basic staple of everything for me. We were in town anyway, and I went into Evans - haven't been in in ages as the quality and styling is a bit 'meh'.

But I bought these: www.evans.co.uk/en/evuk/product/clothing-250468/trousers-250500/evans-black-wide-leg-trousers-264666?bi=25&ps=24

I am pleased with the fit - which is always the priority - but the fabric looks good (not cheap as you would expect at that price).

I also bought this on a whim- it is quite bright but hangs well and looks great with the trousers and also with my jeggings today. Iwww.evans.co.uk/en/evuk/product/clothing-250468/tops-tunics-1881027/evans-pink-floral-print-blouse-3174666?refinements=Colour%7b1%7d~%5bpink%5d&bi=1&ps=24

I am trying not to buy on a whim!

goodasitgets · 24/08/2014 15:45

I got the boden emma in grey, I wear it with a waist belt and it looks really nice
5ft 11, size 16 and 32K here
I live in dresses with waist belts or skinny jeans
Have been buying a lot from asos curve, this was a good one but tiny, sized up to a 20

spookyskeleton · 24/08/2014 20:37

good that dress is stunning and you look fabulous Smile

Am I the only one whose tummy sticks out when wearing tight stuff? I am really paranoid about it and seem to spend my life searching for tops/dresses that disguise this Sad

travailtotravel · 24/08/2014 20:43

No, I have a problem with tight stuff - even with sucky-in pants!

KristinaM · 24/08/2014 20:46

No you are not the only one . Most womens tummies stick out a bit. Especially post kids

Unless they are the build with long torsos and flat tummies. But they get big thighs or saddlebags instead

You probably notice far more on yourself than you do on other women . We are too self critical
