BEST treatment for clapped-out over-dyed hair, please?

Hello stylish beauties. I am in desperate need of a treatment for my repeatedly dyed hair (I succumbed to the ombre phase a few years ago and that's still growing out; I do root touchups every 4-6 weeks now to cover my greys).

I don't have toooo much cash to splash which is why I would like recommendations - if something does turn out to actually work but costs £££ then I guess that's just tough and I'll cough up the money. I have a wedding at the end of the month and I'm going to be a bridesmaid... don't want a bird's nest in the pictures.

Thanks in advance!

It's not cheap but Philip Kingsley elasticizer is really good. You can sometimes get discounts on Look Fantastic. I also like the Sebastian treatments and Pureology. For a home remedy - you could try Mayonnaise. Put it on dry hair, cover with a plastic bag and leave for 20 minutes. Apply shampoo and try work it through before adding water and wash and condition as normal. Does work!

Thank you! I'll take a look at the PK, and hopefully bumping for the evening beautiful people. :)

Im not beautiful!! ...am sitting here with hair covered in coconut oil, wrapped in clingfilm and with a beany hat on!!.

strangely I also decided to look up whati could do with my overdyed dry hair this evening.. and lots of people here recommended coconut oil.. do a search for coconut hair treatment on MN and the rest of net. It sounds good, cheap and no worries about curdling like mayo when its washed out (so they say) Im really hoping its going to work!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/08/2014 19:59

Best treatment is to cut it short?

Laska42 · 13/08/2014 20:00

ive got a pixie cut anyway! (so at least if it dont work, it can be cut in a few weeks

Laska42 · 13/08/2014 21:58

Hi OP. right coconut oil hair repair .. heres my update on trying it for the first time this evening ..

I have v short straight hair.. I dyed it about 2 weeks ago (white blonde - am naturally quite dark but always do blonde these days because it has weird badger grey stripe ). Used a new hair dye last time (was a new l'oreal extra blonde product ) and it wrecked my hair making it very strawlike and crunchy . (I usually use Scwarzkopf Live XL and its always been fine and really soft.. will go back to that now )..

Anyway tried this coconut oil method this evening but only kept it on for three hours rather than overnight as have to get up early and didnt want to risk not being able to get it all out in time).

Have just washed it out -was very easy to get out ..and my hair is so much better , feels really silky soft again and the crunchyness has gone like magic!! ..(and it smells great.) I shampooed it twice but havent put conditioner on it.. Am dead pleased especialy as i thought id have to put up with straw hair for a few weeks as is too short to get cut again

Coconut oil is cheap .. buy it in jars in supermarkets or wholefood shops... . also its great for skin and nails and lots of people on MN recommend it of all sorts of other uses (look up oil pulling especialy)

Why not give it a go before you buy expensive product?

TheFillyjonk · 13/08/2014 22:04

I wanted to love coconut oil, and I'm really glad it worked for you. It did nothing for me, whether I left it overnight or for an hour or so. It tangled my hair and made it drier - you may want to watch out as there's also some debate that it strips colour.

I'm still looking for my holy grail! Beer and Guinness were quite good. I also got an Alberto Balsam honey and almond intensive conditioner from the pound shop that does a great job. Nothing has given me silky, swishy locks though!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/08/2014 22:08

I got my hair cut short and it's condition is worse now Sad
I wash it alternate days, but on non-wash days I soak in the shower.
Windy weather is not my friend (but TBH , I do need it cut again)

PK Elasticiser does get better with use so perservere. I have a bottle in the cupboard so I'm going to get it out. You need to apply on DAMP hair though. Smooth it on, and leave to work, then rinse.
Overnight with a clingfilm hat if you can (ooh the glamour)

meltedmonterayjack · 13/08/2014 22:11

Coconut oil also totally useless for me too. Made my hair like knotted straw.

I've had the most success with my thinning/falling out/dried out menopausal hair with Ojon damage repair treatment. You can buy a tester size (which is still £12) but with short hair you'll get a good 5 treatments out of it. You put it on dry hair, cover your hair with plastic bag/shower cap etc and leave it on for as long as you can be bothered. 2 shampoo's and a condition afterwards and my hair feels soft, less brittle and frizzed and has a shine. I'd get the 'light' version as it smells better and I think gave me a better result (Even though woman in shop said it's the same as the original). I also bought the Ojon oil and put a drop or two of that through the ends. After road testing piles of stuff, this has definitely been the most effective for me.

Laska42 · 13/08/2014 22:14

Thanks filly colour looks the same still.. but will keep an eye on it if i use it again,, will be interesting to see what its like once ive slept on it... will report back..

Laska42 · 13/08/2014 22:16

hmm melted maybe its because my hair is really short and straight ? how long is yours? is it curlyalso?

SweetsForMySweet · 13/08/2014 22:19

I had similar problem with my hair, it was in a really bad way. I thought I needed to get a deep conditioner treatment but my hairdresser said that I was better off cutting it than trying to revive dry split hair. Conditioning it doesn't improve the hair structure and can weigh down the hair making it more lifeless.

meltedmonterayjack · 13/08/2014 22:51

Laska my hair is in a just below jaw length bob. It's incredibly straight, fine and thin. I had high hopes for the coconut oil as I use it as a body moisturiser, oil pulling for teeth and gnerally just love anything to do with coconut. But it was knottier, strawier and drier after I'd used it on my hair which was v disappointing. Esp as this Ojon stuff is £££ I'm glad it works for you and if you've not tried Simply it it's definitely worth a shot. At the very worst you can always cook with it! :)

rootypig · 13/08/2014 22:55

My recommendations are not cheap but they do work. Aveda Damage Remedy (there's a whole range, go for the intensive treatment), and a bloody good trim. Wash with warm water, and on the day of BMing rinse with cold.

Oh wait, I have remembered a cheap one! VO5 Hot Oil!!!

Elasticiser works in the long term but I don't think you have time.

SimplyDarling · 13/08/2014 23:41

Thank you, thank you, my lovelies, for all these brilliant suggestions. :D

I have a trim booked next Friday--just for the ends. As much as I would love to chop it all off, the person who has painstakingly planned his wedding to include his bridesmaid with long hair would have what is technically known as a bitchfit, were I to appear on the Big Day with cropped barnet. Ahem.

Coconut oil - I have tried that in the past with limited success, but may revisit. I am now going to do my homework and decide on best option between Ojon, PK and Aveda DR... also, had forgotten all about Vo5 hot oil, what a blast from the past Grin

Thank you all again. Feel less panicky now I have a plan.

rootypig · 13/08/2014 23:45

VO5 hot oil is actually still the biz Grin I had a craving for a hair treatment a few months back - couldn't put my finger on it, it had to be sort of trashy, but good - and then I had it! the body hot oil! and my hair was soft and swishy Grin

More seriously, the effects aren't necessarily long lasting, but they will help you out of this pinch. Give it a go over the weekend, it's about a fiver for three so not much lost if it doesn't work.

SimplyDarling · 14/08/2014 00:00

...So basically it's the Pot Noodle of hair treatments? ;)

Heh. Will give it a go and revisit my teenaged years. Thanks again!

OP posts:
rootypig · 14/08/2014 00:07

It is the SUPERNOODLE of hair treatments!

CastilianHhhhidalgo · 14/08/2014 00:13

K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor is fabulous stuff for over dyed/bleached hair. It's very highly recommended amongst bright-coloured-hair aficionados Grin

KristinaM · 14/08/2014 00:45

I know nothing about hair treatments but would like to hear the groomzilla story please Grin

SimplyDarling · 14/08/2014 09:00

KristinaM, I already have a growing stash of Groomzilla anecdotal gold--but as a bestie it would be highly uncharitable of me to spill. Wink

well after sleeing on it and showering/shampooing this morning.. I have to say my 'coconut hair' is still feeling soft and lovely which it hasnt done since i bleached it.. .. Perhaps I just have the 'right' kind of hair for coconut oil treatment ..

SimplyDarling · 14/08/2014 13:10

Really glad to hear it Laska! I may give it another go. Have been looking at the K-Pak too and the reviews are pretty great!

Oh. Go on . You know you want to

Mostlyjustaluker · 14/08/2014 19:25

I second v05 hot oil but it only lasts about 5 washes. You really need to figure out what is amusing the problem. Dying often improves hair condition. Do you use heat protector before styling?
