Wedding ring - do you like this?

dottytablecloth · 11/08/2014 13:43

I didn't get an engagement ring Sad just a plain gold wedding band.

Anyway we will soon be coming up to a significant anniversary and dh wants to get me a new eternity/wedding ring. I don't wear any other rings.

I do fancy something with some sparkle is this nice?

I've never shopped for a ring before!

Anyone ever heard of this company or bought from them before?

More importantly is it nice? Opinions welcome!

Dotty are you going to wear this instead of your wedding band or is it in addition to your wedding band?

DinoSnores · 11/08/2014 14:22

I wouldn't want it but it doesn't really matter. It really does come down to what you want. The fact you are questioning it makes me wonder whether you aren't sure about it. Wait until you find something you love.

dottytablecloth · 11/08/2014 14:27

It's to wear instead of my wedding band, so I wouldn't be wearing both.

I don't wear other jewellery really apart from necklace occasionally, don't have pieced ears.

For the same price could you get a bridal set? So you have both rings (if you wanted) ernest jones do lovely ones that are blingy but more demure and you could get a lovely set within that price range. I don't know how to link but here's the web address www.ernestjones.co.uk/webstore/l/diamonds/style|bridal+set/category|jewellery/

samthewolf · 11/08/2014 14:30

Not many in gold though upon looking again sorry!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 11/08/2014 14:38

From a purely practical perspective it doesn't look great as a wear-all-the-time ring. The hollow back looks like it will collect dirt and moisture easily.

plummyjam · 11/08/2014 14:46

It's very pretty but I'd avoid going for a band with stones all the way around because they can't really be adjusted if you gain or lose weight.

BreeVDKamp · 11/08/2014 14:49

Ooooooh I love a ring thread!! I personally think yellow gold and white diamonds clash but if the first ring was in platinum or white gold I would love it!! Love that it has diamonds around the sides as well. Have you deffo ruled it out?

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 11/08/2014 14:52

The ring in the OP isn't what I like. I much prefer the look of this ring, by Stefan Canturi (in Sydney), the jeweller who made Nicole Kidman's necklace in Moulin Rouge.

To be honest, I would be looking at an antique ring or buying something at auction, for that sort of money. You will lose a lot of the purchase price in the mark up, rather just getting top diamonds for your dollars.

dottytablecloth · 11/08/2014 14:53

No not ruled it out! I really love it but I'm worried that maybe I've got tacky taste in rings!

OP posts:
Onesleeptillwembley · 11/08/2014 14:53

Absolutely not to my taste but that's the beauty of jewellery, something to suit everyone.

BreeVDKamp · 11/08/2014 14:57

Not tacky OP! Tacky is all a matter of opinion and you should get whatever makes you happy! And no-one in real life is going to tell you if they think it is tacky. I hope. THAT would be tacky.

I feel like tacky is a personality trait rather than something a piece of jewellery or clothing can be Grin

BreeVDKamp · 11/08/2014 14:58

The word tacky has lost all meaning to me now after that post.

turdfairynomore · 11/08/2014 15:10

I'm with belinda! Even if you have the stones from an old ring reset you just get so much more for your money.

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 11/08/2014 15:19

I called a place that provides loans against jewellery, to ask if they would value a ring I wanted to buy. They said that for jewellery around the few thousand pounds mark, the best value purchasing is from an auction house like Bonhams et al. As it was, I found a valuer and bought my ring from Grays Antiques, anyway, but that advice stayed in my mind.

If you like it, OP, then surely that is what actually matters?

butterflyroom · 11/08/2014 18:21

Brilliant Anyfucker Grin

PinkSparklyElephant · 11/08/2014 18:39

I don't like it, it's too big and blingy for my taste, but if you do that's all that matters.

I and I wouldn't recommend Ernest Jones, I think the quality of their jewellery is quite poor for the price. I don't know where you are but if you've got a Swag near you they have some lovely jewellery and the customer service and after care is excellent - unlike Ernest Jones!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/08/2014 18:40

If your budget is that hefty google church house jewellery and get something made-Jeremy Herber will do something really niceSmile

florascotia · 11/08/2014 18:43

Firstly, your money, your choice. As others have said, if you love it ...

I like yellow gold on some people - it suits them better than white. I wear it.
BUT, re this ring:

  • are the diamonds ethical?
  • have you tried the ring on? Rings with hard edges, inside or out, are often really uncomfortable to wear.
  • an 'all round' ring like that can never be re-sized. Will your fingers stay the same for ever?
  • lots of small diamonds are much cheaper, milligram for milligram, than one or two larger ones, they also MAY be less good quality. (In your preferred ring, they may not be, I simply do not know. ) Ask the seller about the GRADE of the diamonds in the ring - for grading, see sites such as www.adiamondbuyingguide.com/diamondgrading.html
  • consider secondhand, vintage or antique. You get ore for the money, and often better quality - secondhand/antique is at least 20% cheaper because VAT is not charged. Also, you are almost certain to be getting something unique. There are many excellent companies - with websites - selling vintage real jewels - google James Ness or Carole Franks for example. There are also shops in places like Brighton, or in Glasgow's Argyle Arcade. (Am sure Mumsnetter's can help with other similar locations). And many local independent quality jewellers also often have a few secondhand items for sale. Perhaps you might like to go and see your best local jeweller and discuss your tastes and your budget with him/her and see what they have to offer.
  • consider going to visit a range of stores in person in London's Hatton Garden district or Brirmingham's jewellery quarter. Again, am sure that Mumsnetters can help with this. Often, it's cheaper and more personal that buying off a website.

It may very well be that the company that makes the ring you have chosen can offer a good, reputable, personal service. By all the above, I don't mean to criticise them.

Seriouslyffs · 11/08/2014 18:47

For that money you could go to Cartier, get beautifully smoozed over looked after and come away with something on a red box, certificate of insurance, etc.

JohnCusacksWife · 11/08/2014 18:50

I'm not keen on it...too blindly for me. And I'm a sentimental old soul who would never want to replace my old plain gold wedding band since anything new wouldn't actually be my wedding ring (as in it wasn't the ring I got married with). I'd rather get something to wear alongside it - either an engagement or eternity ring style.

Yes, I quite agree about the importance of choosing in person, IRL. A damned good browse and a load of conflicting opinions on here is surely valuable research but you really should go somewhere and try a load.
