shampoo and conditioner for itchy scalp?

Fubsy · 10/08/2014 17:05

I have short, grey hair which I don't colour as I don't want to aggravate my scaslp any more. I have a permanently itchy scaslp, but its not due to dandruff or dryness - if anything my scaslp is a little oily, although my hair us quite dry.

I have tried loads of different brands - organic, non SLS, natural, premium, I still itch Sad

Neutrogena coal tar type products roughen my hair. I was using the new Elvive Fibrology, but that seemed to make it worse - my scalp actually seemed a little scabby. Annoying, as that two huge bottles I don't want to use.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm on a tight budget unfortunately!

You may have already tried it but I use head and shoulders with the added almond oil. Works really well for me.

WitchWay · 10/08/2014 17:44

I use head & shoulders at the moment. I've also used the antidandruff one from Naked Clear which was OK. My favourite was a tea tree & mint one from Original Source but I haven't been able to find it for ages now.

I like Barefoot SOS, only thing I have tried that stops the itch. Unfortunately still get dandruff but not massively visible, and I suspect is hormonal.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/08/2014 17:51

Loreal anti dandruff for men (don't be put off, it's the dark blue bottled one that everyone raved about but rebranded) black bottle with orange lid. You can get it in Boots.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 10/08/2014 17:54

Same as you! Don't used head and shoulders terrible for the itch! Or at least try to get a sample before buying.
Have you tried Naked (available at boots)?

Fubsy · 10/08/2014 19:50

The Barefoot sounds nice but pricey. I have used H&S in the past but not recently, and I think you can get minis, so that's worth a try.

Naked sounds good too. Thanks for ideas - its all useful!

Naked is awful stuff ime, it took over a month to get my hair to stop looking like straw!

Phillip Kingsley ( he's a trichologist) Itchy Flakey Scalp shampoo (there's a conditioner and scalp tonic too)
M&S , John Lewis, QVC sell it

Sneepy · 10/08/2014 20:45

Eucerin Shampoo, you won't even need a conditioner. Larger Boots carry it.

dottytablecloth · 10/08/2014 21:05

Scalp benefits by Aveda is amazing.

NormHonal · 10/08/2014 21:07

Try going to see your doctor. I got some stuff on prescription for dermatitis and every time it flares up, one or two washes sorts it out.

MicrochipsAndMemories · 10/08/2014 21:07

Baby shampoo!

swingonastar · 10/08/2014 21:17

I second Original Source mint & tea tree shampoo and conditioner if you can find it - maybe online?

Bert's Bees products are also nice.

CrazyLadyAtNumber31 · 11/08/2014 15:02

Dead Sea Salt Magik shampoo is the absolute best for itchy scalp but is costs about £8.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 11/08/2014 15:12

Original Source mint & tea tree shampoo MIL got this. I checked the ingredients and it has got SLS, quite bad for itchy scalps. It is also written on it that essential oils might be an irritant for some people. Be careful.

Try the mini ones or borrow samples from friends.

Artandco · 11/08/2014 15:37

Jason's or burts bees

Fubsy · 11/08/2014 16:41

Thanks everyone! I'm going to start off with the head and shoulders as cheap and easy to get - nearest big Boots is 16 miles away. If it doesn't work I'm sure Dd will use it and I will try one of the others.

70 - I did get some of the Philip Kingsley from QVC once and had high hopes for it, but didn't feel it made much difference which was a shame.

OP mentioned having tried non-SLS products and didn't mention wanting to limit recommendations to this type of product...hence my Original Source suggestion! I too can read the ingredients, and when I've had an itchy scalp it's been the best thing to sort it :-)

As an aside, I often mix a little bicarbonate of soda into my shampoo for a bit of a clarifying effect, this might help of you want to cut down on the amount of product you use.

Fubsy · 12/08/2014 10:21

I don't know whether sls makes a differrence for me as I'm permanently itchy! Its the thing that asnnoys me about lush though, I love their stuff but can't understand how they can makjwe preservative free products yet not use a better foaming agent.

About to wash with Head and shoulders.

Pinkfrocks · 12/08/2014 12:35

Philip KIngsley is the only thing we have found to work- it might take a while as it appears to take off the flakes before your skin actually heals.

Head & shoulders is renowned for being harsh on the scalp- I'd never use it in a million years.

bluesbaby · 12/08/2014 12:46

Nizoral for a proper cure (tar shampoo)

Then once it's gone, shampoos like Redken or The Body Shop Rainforest.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 12/08/2014 13:27

I'm permanently itchy
Have you been checked for mycosis or psoriasis?
You will need to treat those before you can see a difference in shampoo.

Do you have any food allergies? Some shampoos have wheat, citruses and other ingredients that can react with your skin.

Last, do you exercise or sweat a lot? You can react to you own sweat. You shouldn't shower straight away after exercise in that case i.e. you are still sweating in and after the shower. It will not wash the sweat especially if you like your shower very hot.
You have to cool down first then take a tepid shower to rinse it all off.

Good luck with the trials!

Fubsy · 12/08/2014 19:57

laughs at idea of exercising a lot!

I do get quite sweaty though and its worse then. I've put off talking to a GP as I've been quite as lot recently and I'm starting to get that can't quite keep their eyes open look from the ones I've seen recently. I think its something I will have to do eventually!

I've tried Redken itchy scalp shampoo, again, nothing!

FabulousFudge · 12/08/2014 20:01

I'm the same - nothing works!

Nellymay · 12/08/2014 23:21

I get my shampoo and conditioner from purenuffstuff it's cleared up my itchy flakey scalp. Also, I'm trying out shampoo and conditioner from mistry's (read it on mnet) and from green people. Good luck
