Glamourous work clothes for fat me?

MiscellaneousAssortment · 07/08/2014 21:12

I am disabled so can't move around much (at all), and so am fat, particularly around the waist.

I've been hiding in tunics and dresses for ages, but now feel out of sync with my ultra fashionable work colleagues. I know i cant look beautiful as i am, but ive gone for a line or high waisted floaty things to hide the bulge, and Ive got stuck in a boden/ salt/ monsoon/ m&s horror show - I need to change!

I went to a work event in my usual skinny trousers plus empire waisted floaty top, and felt so dowdy. Colleagues were all wearing tailored and fabulous black numbers with cool/ different details / shaping and towering high heels.

I defo can't do the high heels but was hoping I could get a couple of snazzy and sharp outfits into my wardrobe so I don't feel utterly humiliated.

But where to shop and how to adapt the look for fatness? I find things that squeeze and press on my tummy hurt too much to wear, and tend to look bad too as I get fat rolls and creases... Just to add to the problem.

Any ideas gratefully received...

If you paid by paypal I think you only get a credit note if you return to store at HoF. Least this is what happened with my friend.

I paid by card. I have help on Tuesday's, so will ask her to take the stuff back to a HoF, I can't have a credit note for that much money. Am now cursing that I didn't read through every bit of the terms and conditions...

This is confirming why I have so many problems buying clothes, if I can't buy enough to try on then I have to buy one or two then send them back when they don't fit :(

Don't worry, I think there are a few options for return - by post in your helper could take them there (and get a slip for proof of postage, though the actual postage cost should be covered by a pre-paid label that comes in the parcel), by returning to a collect-plus store (lots of local stores are signed up to this), or possibly by arranging a courier to pick up at your house through H of F, and from what previous poster says return to store also.

There is a link here with more details and you can call customer services if you need advice. I think that as long as you post it within 14 days it doesn't have to reach them in that time, but obviously with return to store it would.

(there is a link in the above to more info on courier collection).

Returns are a pain, literally often - hopefully your helper can assist with re-packing etc. It sucks Thanks. Stick with it though, it is worth it for the odd time you strike gold and with any luck that will increasingly happen if you get used to the style of certain brands.

Hope you like something in your parcel tomorrow! I may not be on tomorrow as my mouse has gone very odd, I'm negotiating the screen with the arrows and other weird things are happening to the computer - doesn't bode well!

Hello! Well a Masssive box arrived at 10pm, and I've been going through it but have had to stop for the night as too much bending and wriggling involved... But

Damn it everything is too big!!!

It's like a riddle
Q: when is the only time a woman is genuinely pissed off by dropping dress sizes. A: when she's just spent £*00s pounds and hours and hours scavenging the house of Fraser site for 20/22 size clothes, and knows they are all one or two sizes too big

For fucks sake.

Am too knackered to think of an elegant solution tonight but it may involve sending helper into central London to scour for smaller sizes of some of the clothes. Or even (is this ridiculous?) picking a couple of really nice ones and finding someone to size them down?

Why not Google 'fatshion' or 'plus size bloggers' or look for them on Instagram if you have it.
That way you'll be able to see the clothes on similar bodies to yours and get some ideas about what you like and what might suit you.
Simply be and Yours do have some stores now, so if your close to one you could go and try on a few bits.
I was all tunics and waterfall cardies until I started looking online at fatshion blogs. There's a brilliant online (and real life) community of gorgeous fat women who are brave with what they wear! It really inspired me to become more confident and wear clothes that I feel nice in.

oh what a shame! But being too small is a good problem to have Grin . Can you get an idea of what you like in the bigger sizes and then ask the lady who helps you to take the rejects back and swap over the ones you like?

I think I'm a 16/18 top of they aren't fitted (18 and look bad if they are), and a 18/20 bottom but bulgy around the stomach. But I do think the brands I tried must be very generous on sizing.

I know I stopped eating a few months back due to stress and was most grumpy to not lose any weight, but I think I must have and not noticed due to all clothes being stretchy and not losing weight in one place.

Ah well, another small step forwards... But I love one of the Mary portas skirts, and a Biba cardigan thing, and although a bit on the generous size think I might keep (tempted to wear tomorrow!)

And I do like two Mary portas dresses but feel they're verging on shapeless so hoping I can downsize. And that star top I posted before i really like but again is kinda roomy.

A suit jacket made me look like a big square (like the 'i am a shape' in mister maker!) trousers that I could get on without undoing them, and then lots of skirts, tops dresses all frustratingly way too big.

Sorry it was so frustrating! It is all a learning experience though - brands, and different styles, vary so much...and too big is good, better than too small!

Levantine · 12/08/2014 08:27

Oh no! It sounds as if you have found some new brands that will work for you though - hopefully. How about a new bag? V easy to order online, no need to try on?
