Before I met dh and had dd (only 5 years ago) i was very glam, had loads going out clothes and felt like a million dollars.I got lots attention from blokes which made me feel great

Now never go out but that doesnt bother me as life different now MUCH happier and all that

But when i do go out (this fri, works do) i dont know what to wear, feel fat feel old and SO out of it

I am treating myself to something new but worry that i end up looking overdone

anyone else share this feeling/worry?

I feel like that and I'm only 27 - i felt like I'd been out of fashion cirles for so long whilst pregnant etc, that i didn't know where to start. I also felt like a i was in a different age group now and having had a child, had to dress differently. It also didn't help that my body felt totally different. I have slowly regained my confidence and now buy things I like the look of and wear it with pride!! Confidence is definitely the key!!

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 13/09/2006 21:33

My body has not changed that much but its softer and I think that makes me feel like a fat b@stard

I wear pretty much the same stuff as i did before I got preg but my choices are in general loads different to 10yrs ago say. I think it's because I know what will suit me much better so I'm able to pick a trend that will look good on me rather than just wearing anything and everything that's in fashion. Still love Topshop and hope I always will .

Don't think much has changed in terms of the type of clothes, I've always had a phobia about getting "mumsy". But I do buy most of my stuff in discount shops (eg TK Maxx) or cheapo chain stores (eg Primark) or sales because money is tighter. I'm also more practical and make sure everything is washable before I buy. Because I have less time for clothes shopping (only my 3 lunch breaks while I work)I have to be more decisive and buy straight away, and I'm more ruthless about taking stuff back that doesn't fit/doesn't match/is dry clean only/have had second thoughts about.

Have changed slightly due to shape...still slim but not as.i love whistles clothes...not boring mumsy, still have an edge and also not too young looking

northerner · 24/10/2006 16:49

OOh no. I am so concious of becoming Mumsy I would never let it happen.

Still wear nice clothes, heels, make up etc.

geekgrrl · 24/10/2006 16:50

yes, it's always jeans now... used to wear a lot of extremely short skirts - don't think I even own any now.
Tights just aren't practical for country life with children.

rustycreakingdoorbear · 24/10/2006 16:53

Nope - wore jeans when I was 18,wear jeans now. Not the same size jeans though...

Snowstorm · 24/10/2006 17:04

I used to wear heeled boots nearly all the time but when I was about 6 months pregnant with my first child my left food spread out even wider than it had previously been, meaning that I'm fairly good across swampy ground but that heels of any sort can only be worn for a limited time only or else I'm in agony. So I'm much shorter as a mum!

I also have to base my footwear around what I can push a pram in; my nice handbags have been replaced with something that can fit the contents of the house in; I don't possess a pair of jeans without holes in at least one knee; it's rare for me to be seen without at least one dried smear of snot on my top/jeans from DD2; and, a waterproof coat with a good hood has become my 'must have' item ... otherwise everything's pretty much the same

Blossomhowl · 24/10/2006 17:10

I am far trendier and worry about my appearance more than I did when I had ds 9 yrs ago.

With 2 children under 2 I just didn't care tbh. Was too tired and just wore quite frumpy clothes.

Now try and look the best I can.

MrsBadger · 24/10/2006 17:11

I seem to have done it the other way round to most people - used to wear lots of very casual scruffy studenty clothes (trainers, hoodies, baggy jumpers, surf-type stuff) and then had a Grown Up Woman renaissance resulting in boots, fitted cords and trousers, the ubiquitous vest / v-neck / little jacket combo, proper accessories etc.

(Think this may in a large part be due to having very casually-dressed jobs for so long though - have never worn suits, tights and/or heels to work)

Yes now I can stay in my pj's all day as it's half term
I could never do that years ago as I had to go out to work

PeachyBobbingParty · 24/10/2006 18:12

Well I don't wear skirts so short that I need bikini bottoms underneath any more, that's for sure, and the heels often go as I can't run after them wearing them. But I did spend the spring with carnation pink hair, and I never will never ever do the beige skirt and cream poloneck combo favoured by so many of the yummy mummy brigade at the school, no siree, not I! LOL

I do tend to grasp events and really go for it because theya re so rare now, but Dh ikes me glam- thank goodness

Snowstorm · 24/10/2006 20:14

LOL Pruni - "can no longer hold my tummy in, no longer have the urge to hold my tummy in" - very funny!!!

FrannyandZooey · 24/10/2006 20:16

Oh Pruni just go to Matalan like the rest of us

Hmm,yes, its very worrying.Cannot remember when I last wore heeled shoes. They just aren't practical for the park,or carrying a baby downstairs,or playing football with a toddler.Sigh.

lucykate · 24/10/2006 21:44

i dress completely different, but i think its more to do with my age now than having had the kids, i'm 36. i used to have loads of clothes, all from cheap shops. now i have much smaller wardrobe, but spend more on individual items (not alot more though, money is tight), but i'm much more careful about what i buy. never buy on impulse, if i see something i like, i usually think about it for a week or so before buying, and its usually online shopping, so much easier than trudging round shops with 2 kids in tow.

imaginaryfriend · 24/10/2006 21:54

I was very interested in clothes pre-dd and spent hours in thrift shops, high street shops and other people's wardrobes looking for things I liked.

Now I live in one of 3 pairs of jeans / trousers and whichever top is closest to hand. It depresses me sometimes. I recently bought something new to wear to dd's party and I got the buzz I used to get when I found something really special.

unhallowed · 24/10/2006 22:02

Now that I'm a mum all I seem to wear are track bottoms and hoodies. Jeans are for a special occasion so I've started slumming it. If I wear anything more dressy than jeans I do think I'm overdoing it.

Gobbledispook · 24/10/2006 22:05

Not changed that much - don't wear skirts as short as I used to but then I don't clubbing as often as I used to either!

I probably have more clothes and also better quality clothes now as I have more money to spend on them, and accessories. Definitely have a lot more shoes than I used to!
