How does this sound for wedding guest outfit...

Red and black fitted satin dress from pepperberry; black feathery fascinator; black lace unstructured jacket; white carvela wedges?

Is so much black ok for a wedding? And are white shoes ok with black accessories? Help! Thanks :)

Honestly? Satin, black, red, lace, feathers plus white sounds rather, 'busy' to me. But I am really not a style icon, so wait until somebody else comes along and feel free to ignore me!

CocktailQueen · 22/07/2014 08:31

Lol! Hmm, will see if I can post links to any of them. Would a plain black kimono jacket look better then? I've ordered several from new look and am waiting for them to arrive. Will go with the one that looks best.

A summer wedding? I wouldn't do red & black TBH and with feathers too sounds like something out of a western film - in the saloon Grin but I'm sure if I saw it I'd think differently.

The wedges would be good though. Sorry

BunnyLebowski · 22/07/2014 08:38

It doesn't sound good to me. At all.

White shoes with a predominantly black outfit is a definite no for a start.

Can you post links?

SinglePringle · 22/07/2014 08:46

I too have a vision of a Wild West bordello girl! Am sure it's not but red and black satin, feathers and lace due conjure a certain image!

GingerRodgers · 22/07/2014 08:55

I really can't see white wedges looking good with this.
If it's an outfit for the whole day I'd say lace and satin especially red and black would look a bit too much.
For the evening then possibly ok.

cookielove · 22/07/2014 09:00

this one

or is it this one

or this

this

CocktailQueen · 22/07/2014 12:51

OK. the fascinator is like this but black (and not sequinned): www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BNWT-Purple-Fascinator-with-large-feather-detail-by-Per-Una-M-S-Cost-25-New-/271535847801?pt=UK_Fascinators&hash=item3f38cc3979

the dress is www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Pepperberry-Bravissimo-size-8-18-CV-RC-SC-Pink-Floral-Shift-Pleated-Dress-/261515410160?pt=UK_Women_s_Dresses&var=&hash=item3ce3887af0

and I have bought these jackets:

www.newlook.com/shop/label-lounge/c/cameo-rose-black-lace-kimono_321627301

Think you're right about the wedges. What was I thinking?

Am panicking a bit as I am crap at dressing formally. What shoes and bag would go with these, please?

BunnyLebowski · 22/07/2014 13:50

The dress is fine. No problems there.

In my honest opinion you need to ditch everything else.

Fascinators are not nice or stylish at the best of times but you just don't need one with a patterned dress. Too busy.

Same goes for the jackets. There's no need for one over that dress and the ones you've linked to don't go with the dress at all.

I would keep it very simple. The dress, some not too high heels in a complimentary colour, a nice bag and simple jewellery. And a good blow dry or simple unadorned natural looking updo.

Less is more.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/07/2014 15:16

The dress is nice - much nicer than you made it sound! Is the background blue or black?

Personally, I don't like either of those jackets. Would a white jacket work with it, maybe a cropped Chanel-esque one? Then you could wear your white shoes too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/07/2014 15:16

And agree re losing the fascinator.

CommanderShepard · 22/07/2014 17:54

Black is going to clash horribly with that dress I'm afraid.

Roussette · 22/07/2014 18:16

Bloody 'ell, that fascinator link should come with a health warning, it's a severed head Grin

If the wedding is soon, why do you need a jacket? A plain pashmina would be better. Also, really don't like the fascinator at all - too fussy.

SinglePringle · 22/07/2014 18:27

Agree - dress is fine. The jackets will kill it and the fascinator needs to be killed!

If you want a jacket, a plain white blazer would look good. Or pale grey.

If a white jacket, I'd go for grey shoes. If grey jacket, I'd go for the pink colour. Minimal jewelry with a dress so patterned. Grey / white or pink clutch.

No hat / head ornamentals.

CocktailQueen · 22/07/2014 20:08

But I want to wear a black jacket to make me look thinner... and I have a grey fascinator too ... I wanted to wear a fascinator. Don't you have to wear heads gear at a wedding?? It's not till September...

What about nude heels?

OP posts:
Mrsgrumble · 22/07/2014 20:11

A black jacket won't look right. A fascinator is nice. What about a pashmina? That jacket looks too heavy.

GingerRodgers · 22/07/2014 20:20

Please don't wear a black jacket! Have you got a cream scarf/shawl type thing? Even navy would be nice.
Not sure if nude shoes would clash with the pinky red in the dress. What about tan?
I'd lose the fascinator too. If you really need something, what about a nice hair clip? The dress is enough without going mad with your hair too.

BunnyLebowski · 22/07/2014 20:29

What actual colours are in the dress OP?

Because in the photos it looks pink, light navy and white/cream? Confused. And the model is wearing navy shoes?

You can wear whatever you want. But a black jacket will not look right or nice with that dress. And you must already be pretty slim to be even considering wearing a satin dress in the first place!!

Pink shoes (nude at a push), no fascinator and a white or cream (whichever is in the dress) jacket if you insist on wearing one. I really don't think the dress needs a jacket at all though.

CocktailQueen · 22/07/2014 22:34

Navy background, creams and pinks.

Btw I am a size 18 ... The dress fits perfectly. Put it on and dh said wow. In a non-sarcastic way... Am I too fat to wear it?.

OP posts:
Roussette · 22/07/2014 22:42

Good grief no, it looks perfect, love the dress. But a black jacket won't help I don't think, not summery enough but maybe I am just saying this because it has been hot today
Do prefer a pashmina though

NanooCov · 22/07/2014 22:55

Dress is lovely, jackets are awful. I like a fascinator but not that one and not sure you need one with that dress. I think nude shoes and bag might work. And a pale pashmina. The black jackets are not slimming, they're bogging.

isshoes · 22/07/2014 23:04

I'm confused - I thought you said the dress was red and black?

I don't like fascinators (and no they aren't compulsory). Agree the jackets aren't good and no to white shoes.

If the dress fits perfectly then you aren't too fat for it!

Why not go for navy shoes like the model?

mamalovesmojitos · 22/07/2014 23:05

Agree with everyone else! Dress is gorgeous, don't ruin it with any black. Navy or pinky shoes, possibly nude. Neutral nails. Maybe a wrap/pashmina. I hate most fascinators but that's my own taste, hopefully someone with better imagination will find a headpiece for you.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/07/2014 09:11

Don't wear a pashmina - they are really not a nice look, all draped over shoulders. Get a cropped jacket or even a fabric biker-esque jacket, in a nubbly white fabric or cream at a push, or very pale pink maybe.

Topshop have a pale pink blazer

Mint Velvet have a pink biker

Cropped French Connection

Not seen any of them in the flesh though.

CocktailQueen · 23/07/2014 09:19

I can't wear pashminas - I look silly in them. I had remembered the dress was black background with red flowers rather than navy background with pinks flowers.

I wanted a longer jacket to hide my tummy.

YY to navy shoes - will have a look. Will wedges suit the dress or will stilettoes be better? Prefer wedges...
