Would you ever let your underarm hair...

Greengardenpixie · 19/07/2014 20:19

Just grow?
When i was young, i never thought about shaving it. I guess i am from an Italian background and it just wasnt the done thing. Part of me thinks..why should i shave??? Its meant to be there. I couldnt do it and feel really embaressed if its growing in..but it annoys me as everyone has it and its meant to be.
What do you think?
Do you shave it in the winter?

I've let mine grow. I quite like it. I just never got round to shaving it after the winter and bow I dont want to.

Liara · 19/07/2014 20:24

I've tried, on principle, but it just bothers me. I have the hairless thing ingrained too far and find any underarm hair uncomfortable.

If I didn't, I wouldn't shave.

Greengardenpixie · 19/07/2014 20:24

Im impressed lampy!! I remember when my mum was young [ she is now in nearly 80] she had underarm hair and nothing was ever thought about it!! We have become quite obsessed over being hairless!!

Doesn't it get really smelly if you leave it? Blush You would need a shower twice a day in this weather ...?

scarletforya · 19/07/2014 20:30

I've become quite lax about it lately as I have a climbing toddler who could easily get the razors.

I have them up in a high cabinet which makes them more bother get. I dislike being hairy though.

JacktheLab · 19/07/2014 20:30

Oh I do, only shave when im going swimming.

It's very culturally ingrained to shave body hair though Hmm

Pregnantagain7 · 19/07/2014 20:33

I'm also from an Italian background and I do shave but when we used to go to Italy for the summer when I was teenager me and my cousins who lived in England used to have a competition to see who could grow it the longest before we came home at the end of the summer.
Things have changed even in Italy the majority of women especially younger women all shave or wax now.

Greengardenpixie · 19/07/2014 20:33

I never shave over the winter unless i was going out wearing something sleeveless or short sleeved.
It probably helps keeping it short for sweating but actually, it isnt that bad.

Smelly? Not at all. I'm not a very sweaty person and use deodorant. Why would you think it gets smellier than a hairless underarm?

OneLittleToddleTerror · 19/07/2014 20:41

Of course it is not smelly. Are all men smelly?

I wouldn't have them grow put though. I'm too ingrained to want to be hairless. Besides I'm moved onto IPL and it's minimal maintenance.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 19/07/2014 20:41

Mine are au naturel... and when I have occasionally shaved them, they get sweaty and smelly incredibly quickly. I mainly don't shave because I simply can't see why it looks better and I like them as they are, but the other reason I don't is because it's nasty feeling. Sweat just sits on your skin and smells, instead of being (presumably) caught by the hair and kept off warm skin as it's supposed to be.

Hairy underarms - definitely cleaner in my experience.

Fairylea · 19/07/2014 20:48

I think it must be fresher to have no hair surely? As deodorant goes directly onto the skin as opposed to hair doesn't it?

I like having everything hair free. Personally I feel much cleaner without it (only hair I have is on my head and eyebrows and eyelashes!).

Dh shaves his arm pits too. I think it's becoming more common for men to do it as part of body grooming. He is very heavily tattooed and actually has a black and white rose in each arm pit! He smells great :)

Softlysoftlycatchymonkey · 19/07/2014 20:50

I hate armpit hair but I become fond of my public hair!

It kind of grows in a big kiss curl at the bottom. It feels nice .

Dp hates it Grin

Ziggyzoom · 19/07/2014 20:51

Why isn't head hair dirty then? Or eyebrows, or eyelashes?

Fairylea · 19/07/2014 20:54

Because you don't sweat as much from your head as you do round your pits. Far more sweat glands there.

LadyLemongrab · 19/07/2014 20:57

I go through phases of letting it grow, the aesthetic aspect doesn't bother me in the slightest but in summer I have to shave as the only time I have ever smelled sweaty has been on hot days when unshaved.

I know people say it doesn't affect smell but I can say categorically it does (for me). On a hot day, clean body, clean clothes, good deodorant - shaved: no smell, unshaved: a very vague whiff late afternoon.

Ziggyzoom · 19/07/2014 20:59

No major sweat glands in legs, why do people shave those?

frames · 19/07/2014 21:01

Yuck. No way growing arm pit hair.

revealall · 19/07/2014 21:01

My armpit hair grows faster than I can shave it. It wouldn't be a good look and get tangled in side zips!

I like pubic hair though. I think it's look odd to see women with no hair at all down there. It's not flattering at all.

Fairylea · 19/07/2014 21:05

Ziggy I didn't say I shaved my legs because of the smell. I shave my legs because I like them to feel smooth. Everyone has different preferences and some sweat more than others - I know I'd smell more if I didn't shave under my arms.

ecuse · 19/07/2014 21:10

I quite often let mine grow over winter. not usually in summer. DP actively prefers it. He likes it soft and strokey, not stubbly (and I can never get a totally clean shave).

Greengardenpixie · 19/07/2014 21:15

For me, i would never shave off my pubic hair down below I might trim but thats about it. Doesnt it itch really badly if you shave it all off down below??? [ when it grows back?] Why would anyone want to look prepubescent?

OP posts:
Fairylea · 19/07/2014 21:18

Oh goodness not all this again.

Shaving off ones pubic hair does not make a fully grown woman look pre pubescent.

It doesn't itch at all for me. I shave every other day, take no time at all and done it since I was about 25 (now 34). I started because I got fed up of sanitary towels sticking to my hair and just decided to shave it all off. Was actually single at the time - divorced mum of one then and not planning to date anyone so nothing to do with a man etc.

I guess everyone has personal ideas about what they like to do with their body :)

Greengardenpixie · 19/07/2014 21:23

...oh yes the santitary towel thing. I once put it on the wrong way..ouch ouch ouch!!
