Would you...return a worn item?

QuizTeamAguilera · 16/07/2014 20:15

I am expecting a flaming.

I have a jacket, bought for an occasion that was hanging on the back of a chair for longer than it was on my back. I essentially carried it around with me for the day.

I have it at home - label still attached, looking and smelling pristine. I know I shall never wesr it again. Shall I return it and get a refund?

Would you?

Why did you leave the label on and wear it?

I think I'd be tempted but not sure that I would go through with it.

Iggly · 16/07/2014 20:19

No. You might use it again. Why on earth buy something just for use once unless your wedding dress?!

QuizTeamAguilera · 16/07/2014 20:21

I have to admit to leaving the label on, in case.

I won't wear it ever again, I don't even really like it. It was a spur of the moment mistake.

Yes I'd take it back. As long as it is pristine and 100% resalable.

whereisshe · 16/07/2014 20:23

You can't return something you've worn! Well, you can, but it would be wrong. What if someone else had done that before you'd bought it, how would you feel?

HygieneFreak · 16/07/2014 20:24

I did this once with a wool Next coat.

It make me itch like crazy.

I wore it twice

Took the tag into Next with the coat and said it had snapped off.

Got a refund no problem

QuizTeamAguilera · 16/07/2014 20:27

whereisshe - How would I know? I probably have bought such items.

Not everyone is as honest as the day is long.

OP posts:

In that situation I probably would.
I wouldn't buy something for an event with the intention of taking it back though.

I would take it back but never tell anyone! This is why I wash new clothes before wearing them!

Shouldwego · 16/07/2014 20:33

I have a friend that does this, I was really shocked when she told me.

It's just not right to wear something then take it back. Surely you know that morally? (And of course legally?)

Of course I know that both morally and legally, it would be wrong but I didn't really wear it.

Yes I would return it. I have done this.

kateecass · 16/07/2014 21:11

Take it back! Wouldn't bother me. A jacket in the shop could have been tried on 100s of times. Just say you tried it on and you didn't like it. True!!

Tadla · 16/07/2014 21:15

Sometimes the shops sniff and inspect the items - I know this as a friend bought a formal/cocktail dress for a family photo shoot, wore for 2 hours and then took it back to the shop. Its very cheeky and be prepared for to be "called" on it.

Laska42 · 16/07/2014 21:16

No

TSSDNCOP · 16/07/2014 21:23

We turn stuff inside out. It's usually evident if it's been worn.

It is always lovely to find tit tape and Monica Lewinsky stains in dress that's "never been worn".

ThisBitchIsResting · 16/07/2014 23:07

I did it today Blush for the first time. In my defence, it was a dress that I bought because I was too hot in what I was wearing, so I immediately changed into it for the journey home (a couple of hours). Got home, looked in the mirror and it was almost totally see through! Black lacy knicks on display to all. So took it back, didn't say I'd worn it, did say I was returning it due to transparency issues. Never done it before though.

whereisshe · 17/07/2014 06:27

I'm slightly horrified by how common this is and how many people think it could be ok! I generally wash my clothes before I wear them, now I will make sure I always do... Hmm

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 06:43

Surly most people would just sell the jacket on eBay in this situation.

You left the tags on, clearly you always intended on returning it.
If you weren't sure about it you should have returned it before wearing it and bought something that you will wear again.

You should sell on eBay not return a used item.

MotherOfInsomniacToddlers · 17/07/2014 06:53

I work on the returns department in a large chain, it's amazing how many incredibly cheeky (and skanky!) people there are out there!

Twistiesandshout · 17/07/2014 06:59

No I wouldn't, it's just dishonest.

Jemster · 17/07/2014 07:04

I might have considered doing this until a recent experience. I bought a navy linen jacket from Sainsburys, great price. Went to wear it and it absolutely stank of stale BO! I felt physically sick as it was so strong. It upset me that someone would think it was ok to do that and that the shop could take it back and put back on rail.
When I returned it and told them the reason they didn't say anything or seem bothered so they probably put it straight back on the rail! Totally gross experience.

eurochick · 17/07/2014 07:04

I wouldn't.

A couple of times I've picked up something in a shop and it has stank of BO so clearly some people do! Eugh.
