Would you...return a worn item?

QuizTeamAguilera · 16/07/2014 20:15

I am expecting a flaming.

I have a jacket, bought for an occasion that was hanging on the back of a chair for longer than it was on my back. I essentially carried it around with me for the day.

I have it at home - label still attached, looking and smelling pristine. I know I shall never wesr it again. Shall I return it and get a refund?

Would you?

Urgh Honey - disgusting!

I bought a silver sparkly dress from M&S in the January sale some years ago which stank of BO - I assumed a sweaty person had tried it on - never occurred to me that they might have worn it to the office Christmas party Shock

Boden let you send stuff back even after wearing for any reason for ages after purchase (up to a year I think). I recently sent back a drab brown dress after wearing it a few times as it really didn't suit me. It was freshly-laundered & in perfect condition.

Pandsbear · 17/07/2014 16:27

I (very recently) had a 'brand new' skirt sent to me carefully packaged up - but with a tissue in the pocket!! Was in the sale so big mark down but even so...

CointreauVersial · 17/07/2014 17:53

I have also found a used tissue in a "new" pair of trousers.

I'm not particularly grossed out, as I regularly buy from charity shops (although the used thong is going a bit far...).

OP, if you barely put the jacket on, and still have the label, I would take it back. Just check the pockets

Flipflops7 · 17/07/2014 21:01

Would never do this and also find the idea that it's commonplace beyond depressing.

0pheliaBalls · 17/07/2014 22:30

I have done this and would again, as long as the item was totally pristine. Definitely take it back.

'Legalised shoplifting', pffffft.

Flipflops7 · 17/07/2014 23:15

Would those who are OK with this also be OK with paying full price for a used item?

MrsCampbellBlack · 18/07/2014 06:12

I am so glad that I buy most of my clothes online and they come with large labels on the front so cheeky people can't wear them for a day and then return them.

whereisshe · 18/07/2014 06:49

If it's been worn, it is by definition not "pristine".

And it's dishonest. And gross. If something is secondhand, I expect to pay secondhand prices for it.

higgle · 18/07/2014 07:11

I wouldn't take it back, but I would ebay it and if it is pristine with the label on it would go as BNWT

0pheliaBalls · 18/07/2014 07:36

FlipFlops as long as it looks/smells new, who's to know? Wouldn't bother me. You see so many clothes hanging on rails in shops with make up stains, dust, buttons hanging off... Some look worse than charity shop rejects. And that's just from where they've been tried on/become shop soiled. If somebody returns something has been worn for a few hours but has not a mark on it I honestly wouldn't mind if I inadvertently bought it. Clothes that have been hanging about in a shop for weeks, tried on umpteen times in sweaty changing rooms, been grabbed by who knows how many dirty hands, seem and often look used imo anyway.

Flipflops7 · 18/07/2014 08:53

If something looks a bit shop-soiled I ask for a discount anyway, if I really want it. I can't touch anything with make-up on, just grosses me out.

I am going to be even more careful in future and look out for elbow creases, perfume and hankies stuffed in pockets!

moggiesmum · 18/07/2014 11:28

It's just NOT right! - and yes dishonest too! I am amazed at how many people think this is ok to do Shock

whereisshe · 18/07/2014 21:06

0pheliaBalls where on earth do you shop? That level of grubbiness isn't my experience at all Hmm

Cuteypatootey · 18/07/2014 21:40

Why buy it in the first place? I don't agree with that. You just make it harder for people who return stuff for genuine reasons.

0pheliaBalls · 18/07/2014 21:48

whereisshe in Monsoon yesterday there was a beautiful £500 wedding dress with foundation stains all over the neckline and a cardigan missing two buttons Sad

whereisshe · 18/07/2014 23:04

Ew. I usually shop online so it comes from the warehouse, sometimes I've returned items that have been damaged but I think the inbound returns dept are more picky, mostly the stuff is fine, often it's still in factory packaging. Makeup stains, tissues, other stains... shop staff don't seem to be as fussy!

Pinkfrocks · 19/07/2014 10:34

I don't understand the 'label still attached'. Do you mean the label with the size and price on that is usually attached with a bit of plastic 'thread'? If so how did you wear it like that- and if you did. how come ? Did you always intend to return it?

I've noticed that some things like handbags and belts have a label attached to the zip or fastener so you simply can't use it without removing the label- possibly this is to prevent them being used once for an occasion then returned.

I wouldn't do it - no.
I've had several dresses that were worn once for 2 hrs and sold them on Ebay.

If I'd carried a coat somewhere once and not worn it I might just try to return but it would depend......

Greengardenpixie · 19/07/2014 10:59

I wouldnt return it if i had properly worn it..but in your case, you havent..so yes.

Greengardenpixie · 19/07/2014 11:02

Where do returns go? Are they resold the same as stuff that isnt? Just curious????

Trills · 19/07/2014 11:02

Do it if you must, but don't kid yourself that it is "pristine".

You probably can't smell your own smell.
