Why do mums get all dolled up for the school run???

I never thought in a million years I would be saying this
but why??????????

Its probably the fact that I'm sleep deprived because of ds but I cannot muster the energy to dress up, style my hair like a model out of Vogue and get all my slap on, just to walk 5 mins around the corner to drop my dd at school then come home.

Is it just me or is there secret rules that I need to learn about the school run?

I try but fail miserably. My first school run is at 7.30 by which time the dog has to have been walked and then it's back to get the next two in the car by 8.35. Bonus baby (aged 2.5) is starting pre-school this week so if I don't want to look like Waynetta's gran I'm going to have to rethink my routine. Sadly I have horrible fine hair that requires time every morning.

lou33 · 12/09/2006 10:16

i'm under 25 in my mind

TenaLady · 12/09/2006 10:16

Jools that depends on how old you are im afraid

bundle · 12/09/2006 10:16

I am vaguely presentable though, I don't want you thinking I'm some sort of Mr Treebus figure, scaring small children.

lou33 · 12/09/2006 10:17

also if i dont wear make up, people keep asking me if i am ill

Ulysees · 12/09/2006 10:18

No I think good skin is more important. Mine is a bit spotty, used to be very spotty But I use a serum from Guinot now and that helps a lot.

TenaLady · 12/09/2006 10:19

Minimum make up is foundation to hide any shadows, the rest is a bonus. I always feel a bit overdressed with lippy though.

YellowFeathers · 12/09/2006 10:20

Snap lou.
People keep saying I must be aneamic! Cheeky sods.
My poor unused tub of vitalumiere is calling out to me.

so by the looks of this thread most of us are pretty presentable? No Waynettas lurking

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/09/2006 10:21

Agree Jools, you dont necessarily need make up. But, doesnt (well it shouldnt) matter whether you do in fact use it or not.

If Im running late for whatever reason, I know what my priorities are - how I look is not top of the list.

LiliLaTigresse · 12/09/2006 10:22

I could never ever do the school run in my pyjamas, sorry but find it a bit odd (as well as rather brave in a lazy sort of way)
I find looking groomed makes me feel good, so I have a shower and wash my hair every morning (easy style that only needs to be half dried, then leave to dry naturally), put make-up on, perfume, clean clothes (even if only jeans and a top). Also gives me time to wake up properly.....
I work from home so really it's just for me
and I'm not competitive at all
I am probably a bit insecure though

littlemissbossy · 12/09/2006 10:22

LOL Enid, that's just what I thought but daren't say it for fear of public stoning on mumsnet

SSSandy · 12/09/2006 10:24

I don't wear foundation these days but I do use a srub once in a while to smooth the skin and a facemask once or twice a week, so my skin is ok (bit freckly). I put on mascara, blusher and lipstick. Natural look really.

Think the most important thing is good hair TBH. Then you look groomed whatever you wear and whether or not you're made-up. I hate my hair though, I battle with it. It's fine and wavy and a pain in the butt.

I've found that if you use a wash-out hair colour in your natural colour, you get lovely glossy hair without a fake look. I use hairspray because my hair is so fly away which works fine, you don't have to go for the helmet look a la Condoleeza Rice. I envy women with dead straight thick hair, it always looks great but I still greet them

SSSandy · 12/09/2006 10:26

sCrub that is

Don't use foundation anymore because I've noticed it never looks good when I've applied it. Always end up taking it off again.

TenaLady · 12/09/2006 11:53

Well public stoning or not anyone got views on the bikini clads at the school gate. Call me old fashioned but I feel its a state of undress inappropriate for the playground or the high street for that matter.

Radley · 12/09/2006 11:56

I don't tend to get dolled up, but, what i find makes me feel better is a bit of the old lemonaid, mascara and lipgloss, subtle, but enough to make me not feel like a minger.

Also, I tend to have my eyelashes and eyebrows dyed every 6 week, then if I don't have time etc, i still look like I have mascara on (no smudges when I'm getting stressed etc)

Fimbo · 12/09/2006 12:08

Don't get dolled up as such. But couldn't go out without showering and washing my hair and wearing clean clothes. I sort clothes out the night before and dh does breakfast whilst I am in the shower. I get ds dressed and myself dressed, plait dd's hair, whilst dh is in the shower. Organise all bags the night before too. Dd only has to take her lunch out the fridge and put it in her bag, then coats on and out the door. We got up at 7.30am this morning and were out by 8.15am. God that sounds smug doesn't it?

Iklboo · 12/09/2006 12:12

DS is only 10 months old so don't have this problem. Even when he is school age, we live right next door to the school so we can just trebuchet the little bugger over the wall

gscrym · 12/09/2006 12:12

I look forward to pulling a sweatshirt over my pyjamas, sticking on some trainers and dropping DS off. That way, straight back to bed when he's deposited in the playground.

hannahsaunt · 12/09/2006 12:24

I send dh

Gobbledigook · 12/09/2006 12:26

Only read first few threads but why are people that like to look nice insecure or competitive? Who wants to look like a bag of shit in public? Not me!

FGS, get up, get a shower, do your hair and put some lippy on you slatterns

Bugsy2 · 12/09/2006 12:26

PMSL at Iklboo!!!! Think you may have found the perfect solution.

multitasker · 12/09/2006 12:27

I thinh its all about personal choices - if you were that bothered you would get up 10 mins earlier, I know I feel better about myself if my hair is not like a birds nest(is thick and curly)and I have some mascara on. Would agree with littlemissbossy - my mother would be vain but deny it, and unfortunately when we turn into our mothers we take the whole baggage!

JoolsToo · 12/09/2006 16:31

oh yes tenalady - definitely
I wouldn't be seen out in public with out my 'mask'!
