I started taking Super D3 after reading a recommendation here and it has really improved my skin.

What other vitamins MUST I take daily?!

Especially interested in any that strengthen teeth & help with hormones Grin

I believe that the scientific evidence doesn't substantiate any claims made for supplements, sorry!

UptheAnty · 07/07/2014 14:15

So I'm just mad Blush 'tis indeed possible that I am.

I don't think any supplements are "must takes". That said, I take a good hair and skin multivitamin (Imadeen, Colladeen Visage, Boots own brand etc) and it does make a difference, for me, for the duration I take them plus a few months afterwards.

SushiForBreakfast · 07/07/2014 14:19

Good luck experimenting OP!

Meglet · 07/07/2014 14:28

I don't know. I take multi-vits and evening primrose and have done ok so far. I'd take imedeen if I had the money.

UptheAnty · 07/07/2014 14:44

After reading the website now, I would take Imedeen if I could afford it also!

For me the only 'must have' vitamin is Vitamin D, it keeps my psoriasis at bay.

ThisBitchIsResting · 07/07/2014 15:30

Just lurking for MN wisdom. I take a prenatal vitamin as currently ttc, but thinking about taking some sort of oil one too, for skin, hair and hormone stuff.

I have heavy periods and feel rotten before and during my periods so anything that is actually proven to help with this would be good.

Rainydayblues · 07/07/2014 15:47

Yep Vitamin D3 in oil.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/07/2014 16:13

I take a bog standard multi vit, a high strength vit c and a vit D and magnesium supplement. Just about to stay taking any eye care supplement too as we have a worrying amount of eye problems in the family.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/07/2014 16:15

This Bitch-my pmt and pain improved 80% by ditching sugar. The difference is dramatic.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/07/2014 16:35

Melanie-why would doctors prescribe supplements if they don't work?Confused

MelanieCheeks · 07/07/2014 16:42

In SOME cases, individuals are short of specific minerals and vitamins.

But by and large, they aren't needed.

study

polyhymnia · 07/07/2014 16:52

No must haves on the scientific evidence. I do take a Imedeen and it may help keep my skin good but certainly not a must have.

TheFisherKing · 07/07/2014 17:06

Magnesium.

UptheAnty · 07/07/2014 21:16

What does magnesium help with?

Is evening primrose really good for pmt?

Is it better to take a multi vitamin & can you take several with no issue?

Thanks for your advice everyone Flowers

None. Eat lots of fresh fruit and veg, salad, nuts, oily fish, butter, avocados, lots of sleep, sunshine, keep away from the alcohol and processed food and walk. If you eat well then you don't need vitamins.

squoosh · 08/07/2014 10:41

'If you eat well then you don't need vitamins.'

Depends where you live, lots of people in unsunny climes suffer from chronic Vitamin D deficiency.

stephenisjustcoming · 08/07/2014 10:50

I take a Vit D supplement because I've tested chronically low for it in the past (pale skin/sun avoider), plus cod liver oil and Perfectil. As an interesting side effect of the Perfectil, my luteal phase has lengthened by a couple of days, probably because of the B vits in there.

Rainydayblues · 08/07/2014 11:11

I had my Vit d levels tested last week - GP was impressed because they were adequate - she says that's becoming more and more unusual. I take a high potency Vit D3 capsule and I sunbathe for 20min a day when we have sun as my dermatologist told me that Vit D from the sun lasts longer in the body, she said that even her patients with Skin cancer are often deficient in VitD - I only put sun screen on my face.

MillyDots · 08/07/2014 11:12

You don't have to live in hot countries to get vit d. Get out each day for a twenty min walk and stop with the sunscreen. The reason for lack of vit d is people not allowing it to penetrate their bodies.

MillyDots · 08/07/2014 11:17

Rainey yes apparantly keeping out of the sun is the biggest cause of vit d deficiency. The message of avoiding the Sun is being turned on its head. Lack of sunshine on naked skin is believed to play a part in a lot of cancers.

specialsubject · 08/07/2014 11:28

if you are in normal health, an adult, not a pensioner, not pregnant, not breastfeeding, get outside and eat a proper no-fad diet you don't need any supplements - they just create expensive urine.

10 mins without sunscreen a day in the UK is plenty in the summer. Our UV levels in the winter are not enough to make vit D but healthy adults cope. Kids, pregnant women, people with health problems may need supplements.

specialsubject · 08/07/2014 11:29

ps doctors prescribe supplements to those that need them, and they do work if there is a deficiency. If there is no deficiency they are useless. Some vitamins are toxic in excess.
