How do you get the perfect bare face? Is it vitamins?

After seeing some lovely photos of Jodie Marsh, without makeup, it has inspired me to improve my skin.

I'd love to be able to go out without having a face full of makeup. I've started on the regular daily skin care of

  • cleansing
  • toning
  • serum
  • eye product
  • moisturisers

But I think that there's more I should be doing to

I know that drinking lots of water will help, but will taking multivitamins/different vitamins help too

What do you do to ensure you have a fab bare face?
What vitamins do you take?

My skin is loads better since I cut right back on carb-scoffage.

And a weekly exfoliate, nothing fancy.

Scarletskies · 05/07/2014 22:43

I find taking quite a lot of cod liver oil and evening primrose has helped a lot. And wearing the right serum for your skin type.

Getting enough sleep.

Stepawayfromthezebras · 05/07/2014 22:46

Gosh, I Googled jodie Marsh without makeup and she looks stunning!

UML · 05/07/2014 22:47

I used to have an almost greyish tinge to my face...

I've started to eat lots of fruit, blackberries, strawberries... I think it's made a big difference...

Water is essential too ... For me it means a smoother look with pores less visible...

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 05/07/2014 22:49

And drink plenty of water every day, and eat a variety of freah veggies (mainly green ones) and different coloured fruits. Exercise helps too.

Lesshastemorespeed · 05/07/2014 22:49

Get the right moisturiser (boots p&p for me).

I see a big difference when I eat healthily. I recently did a detox, nothing hard core, just lots of fruit, veg n fish and herbal teas etc. got a few comments on my skin.

I second lots of sleep too.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 05/07/2014 22:50

X post UML! :)

It does work for so many people.

UML · 05/07/2014 22:52

I used to be so stressed before about finding the best cleanser/cream for me... The thing is that we are looking for this miracle product that gives immediate results... But water/fruit/veg is a long term investment ... Eat well etc and the cheap products will be good enough (in my opinion)

Just looked at the photo. Her skin looks great because it is botoxed to the hilt. Doubt it has anything to do with vitamins or drinking water.

lottiegarbanzo · 06/07/2014 00:09

Sleep, exercise, good diet, hydration. Nothing to do with buying stuff.

Don't believe pictures you see in newspapers or online. But no reason not to look your best of course.

Trollsworth · 06/07/2014 00:14

Genetics.

My friends mother looks the same age as me. She smokes like a chimney and lives on takeaways and beer.

It's not fair.

Lesshastemorespeed · 06/07/2014 00:24

I think getting the right lotions and potions is fairly important. I have very dry, sensitive, fair skin. If I didn't use a suitable factor 15 moisturiser, I'd have a face like a frazzle.

Rainydayblues · 06/07/2014 07:39

Staying away from sugar, eating clean and getting good sleep. It makes a huge difference - you can often tell just by looking at people that they don't eat well, their skin looks grey.

claraschu · 06/07/2014 07:44

I think that unfortunately alcohol and caffeine are terrible for the skin.

CatKisser · 06/07/2014 07:44

The product that's made a huge difference to my face is bizarrely the cheapest I've ever bought. They're from Home Bargains and they're exfoliating face wipes. They're quite abrasive and when you're rubbing your face you think "Christ is this sanding a layer of skin off?" But when you've finished and your face dries, your skin will look so smooth and even. I know I'm raving a bit (I dont work for Home Bargains!) but they are the best product I've bought for my face for ages.

AwesomeSuperTasty · 06/07/2014 07:50

Sunscreen, every day, all year round Lots of day creams have an SPF 'built in' already but I prefer to use something like Elizabeth Arden Daywear, or Clinique city block. Also Clarins XP thing.

Oh yes to the above - cutting out sugar and booze is the quickest way to improve skin.

whereisshe · 06/07/2014 07:50

Genetics mainly. Followed by sunscreen from childhood.

But without those two things (which I sadly lack), I look a lot healthier if I have lots of water, very little sugar, a lot of sleep...

Petrasmumma · 06/07/2014 08:12

Lots of good advice above. I also think stress is pretty bad for your face, so streamlining your life/learning to push back on demands etc can really help.
I'd be interested to hear about serums. I haven't found one worth paying for yet.

PoppyAmex · 06/07/2014 08:13

Yep, genetics, balanced diet, water, sleep and decent products.

I have the driest skin in the world and was born and raised in a tropical country by the beach.

Massive difference since I found the regime that suits my skin.

As all the above posters have said and healthy food including good fats.

nickEcave · 06/07/2014 12:02

Genetics but after that definitely getting rid of stress from your life. In my early 30s I worked full-time in local government management. I was constantly stressed and a bit unhappy (and probably drinking and going out too much) and I was always getting spot breakouts and my skin looked a bit grey. I now have 2 DCs, work part-time (18 hours a week) in a satisfying but low stress job for a university which I really enjoy. I'll be 40 this year and my skin is in the best shape it's been in since I was in my early 20s.

SwiftRelease · 06/07/2014 12:03

Dark-skinned people natural advantage! Then yes, water, not smoking, low stress & good diet in that order.

SwiftRelease · 06/07/2014 12:04

DarkER meant.

ogredownstairs · 06/07/2014 12:39

I am testing this currently - am in third week of no alcohol, sugar or other carbs. Best skin I've ever had, and I've had mild adult acne for years. The first week was the worst, now I'm totally into it and eating loads of salad and veg, olive oil, butter, eggs etc. Steeling myself to give up dairy as well to see if it helps with dark shadows. I remember working with someone in the 90s who drank 2 litres of milk a day (she thought it was incredibly good for her) who had the worst black shadows under her eyes I've ever seen, so I'm prepared to give it a whirl.

KoalaDownUnder · 06/07/2014 17:25

Sunscreen. 365 days a year.
Enough water and sleep, but you don't need to go mad.
Healthy, balanced diet of mainly unprocessed food.
Regular, vigorous exercise
Consistent skin care routine: products not as important as cleaning your face thoroughly but gently.
