How do you get the perfect bare face? Is it vitamins?

After seeing some lovely photos of Jodie Marsh, without makeup, it has inspired me to improve my skin.

I'd love to be able to go out without having a face full of makeup. I've started on the regular daily skin care of

  • cleansing
  • toning
  • serum
  • eye product
  • moisturisers

But I think that there's more I should be doing to

I know that drinking lots of water will help, but will taking multivitamins/different vitamins help too

What do you do to ensure you have a fab bare face?
What vitamins do you take?

Oh, and addressing my iron deficiency has done wonders for my skin.

Lottapianos · 06/07/2014 17:28

Exercise, sleep, water, avocados, nuts, olive oil, lots of veg. Cut right back on caffeine and sugar in all its forms, including booze.

And use a moisturiser that suits your skin, doesn't have to be a fancy one. Clean face properly before bed, every single night without fail.

MarianForrester · 06/07/2014 18:28

Be young- this is the most effective way to look good bare faced.

Genetics

Wear such hideous heavy makeup that you are bound to look better without it

MissMiss1 · 06/07/2014 20:24

Thank you for all your advise

Tomorrow I shall start cutting out sugars, eating cleaner and definitely drinking more water (I def don't do that enough)

Have been looking into vitamins and it so difficult to decide whether a multi vit would help, or whether to buy them separately.

A few years ago I did a low carb diet religiously. Avocados
Nuts, butter etc.My skin glowed to the extent that people who hadn't seen me for a while would say things like, are you in love, have you just come back from holiday? Etc

Sun cream, sleep and genetics all helps too.

Kundry · 06/07/2014 21:54

For me it also depends on what's in your cleanser, toner, serum etc.

Cleanser - gentle and basic as all the ingredients are being washed off.

Toner - a proper AHA or BHA one, not just something with a bit of alcohol in and no active ingredients, my skin has been transformed by Paula's Choice 2% BHA. It's not just the spots and blackheads going, the exfoliating really makes a difference.

Serum - am trying a Vit C and anti-oxidant serum, too early to say if it's making a difference.

Day cream - SPF! may not make a difference for on the day glow but the most important anti-ageing thing you can do

Night cream - contains Vitamin A, really has added 'glow'

specialsubject · 06/07/2014 21:55

if you are in normal health you don't vitamin tabs, you need to eat properly.

sunscreen, don't smoke, choose parents.

photos I've seen of Jodie Marsh with no makeup look like any normal 35 year old, except for the tattooed eyebrows.

MillyDots · 07/07/2014 00:18

Having slightly oily skin. Not using chemicals of any kind on your face. Eating fresh natural food. Smiling and being happy.

MillyDots · 07/07/2014 00:19

People think I am 35 as my skin is clear, unlined and glows. Im in my early 50s Smile

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 07/07/2014 00:25

Genetics and sunscreen, in that order. My skin looks around 10 years younger than me, if I'd no sun damage I'd look like a teenager. (a teenager with laugh lines, of course).

KoalaDownUnder · 07/07/2014 04:34

And let's be realistic, any woman post-30 who is in the public eye has had a ton of professional skin treatments: skin peels, regular facials, microdermabrasion, Botox, and God knows what else. Without the time and money they have access to, the vast majority of mere mortals like us are going to have to work a lot harder to get perfect bare skin.

u32ng · 07/07/2014 06:47

Water water water! I thought I drank enough until one week when I was ill and sipping water constantly and was surprised to have fab skin despite feeling like crap that week! It's a cliché phrase but you really are what you eat. I'm tying to reduce my sugar intake as what I've read makes it sound like it's as good as taking a pair of scissors to all the lovely collagen!

A good skin care routine helps too though I think less is more so don't go using about 10 different things.

Floisme · 07/07/2014 07:53

I agree with looking after your skin but can we please stop comparing ourselves to women in magazines. They're all photo-shopped to hell.

StepUpOrStepOut · 07/07/2014 08:00

Cleaver makeup,

my mum's skin is really lovely and she's in her 70's, she has always cleansed and toned religiously and kept out of the sun. Unfortunately I am not as disciplined .... lots of smile lines!

GobblersKnob · 07/07/2014 12:32

Low carb
Lots of water
No alcohol
No smoking
Early nights
Lots of exercise
Body shop instablur

Works for me, am boring fucker though.

GobblersKnob · 07/07/2014 12:34

On the other hand cleaver make up will probably do it too, just carve off that shit skin Grin

Coumarin · 07/07/2014 13:20

Staying out of the sun or using a good SPF. Water, lots of veg, berry type fruit. Sleep makes a huge difference.

Vitamins that have improved my skin are zinc, iron and vit C. Also evening primrose and a fish oil as a pp mentioned.

Food, water and sleeping habits make a much bigger difference than any face cream or cleanser.

That said, using the oil cleansing method with a flannel also made a positive difference.

I like Jodie Marsh, she looks good in those pics but you should know that she's had a lot of Botox and by the look of it, has eyeliner tattooed on.

Walnut8 · 07/07/2014 13:24

Gobblers Grin

I would be wary about wearing sunscreen every day in the UK. Seems like a whole lot of unnecessary chemicals on your face unless you are outdoors a lot ... ?

MillyDots · 07/07/2014 14:05

Walnut I totally agree. Chemicals on the face age the skin and the jury is out on the effect all those sunscreen chemicals cause melting into the skin then into the bloodstream. Also chemicals in moisturisers, cleaning potions, makeup etc are also suspect. It makes sense really that the less we put on our skin the healthier it will be.

KoalaDownUnder · 07/07/2014 14:07

What is this Body Shop Instablur of which you speak?

I'm hoping I'm not destined to a life of greyish skin, dehydrated with fine lines.

So far today I've managed to drink more water and am trying REALLY hard not to give into my sugar craving. Ive been eating fruit instead.

Also, have looked into a multi vit and am off the H&B tomorrow to buy one. Also a fish oil, any other recommendations?

Drinking more water and eating heathily is a good start but I also remember quite a few people on here mentioning a supplement they'd been taking from Holland & Barrett. I've completely forgotton what it is- vitamin D or something? Hopefully someone will remember, if not try running a search in this section.
