Looking for a non wedding wedding dress!

TheWorldAccordingToJC · 27/06/2014 12:29

I'm getting married at the end of August ( eek! ) and it's going to be a really really low key affair. No flowers, no photographers ... Just a simple ceremony and then lunch.

I can't bring myself to just throw on an existing outfit from my wardrobe though so I need something! And this is where it gets tricky. I don't want anything white or flouncy or wedding-y or over the top. Maxi dresses are out as I'm not very tall. Oh and nothing that requires heels.. I can wear maybe three inch heels max ... I am 5 foot 4 ( a shade under ) and my other half is 5 ft 7 tops.

I also don't like shoes really. I live in Toms , Vans, Uggs , a pair of pistol boots and a few other pairs of ankle boots.

Here's my stats ...

I'm just under 5 ft 4
I'm size 10. Not a toned, willowy size 10 however - an untoned one with wobbly bits and a fat stomach. 34/36 C or D bra size. So things like bandeau style dresses are tricky because I have a tendency to rolls of fat coming out the top.
I'm fair skin tone with brown hair and hazel eyes.

I'd like something that doesn't accentuate my stomach ( it's like an apron of fat and although I have Spanx , that tends to squidge the fat elsewhere ) and I'm not sure about those dresses that have a band under the bugs and then flare out because they make me look pregnant . I'd like something oyster coloured or mink etc but will consider anything at all bar neon and black / navy. Nothing too light because I fear I'll look enormous

I'm also old ( 42 ) but I don't want anything frumpy. Oh and I'd like to wear said dress with a pair of mink coloured suede mint velvet ankle boots ... Or would this be beyond wrong? In my head, it's cool and makes the look less ' formal ' plus it's more ' me '

So ... Please please please ... Any ideas? I've trawled John Lewis online and now am stuck.

Thank you !!

I love these threads in S&B. Started a similar one myself last year!

OP I wore JCrew and it felt lovely and special. I love the one Bearleigh linked to - so Mad Men.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 27/06/2014 21:31

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 27/06/2014 21:48

The courtesan boutique stuff is too flouncy for me. I'd never be able to carry one off I don't think

Tethers - the starburst would make me look like I should be perched atop a toilet roll.

There's lots here I love. Off for another look at the matches dress in a kind of mink colour ...

I like a good few though

DenzelWashington · 27/06/2014 22:59

Proxy shopping is brilliant. All the fun and none of the expense!

Saw this today and thought you might like it.

I know it hasn't got sleeves (and may be a bit pale) but I always think of All Saints dresses with ankle boots, and it looks as if it would be a good shape for you: www.allsaints.com/women/dresses/allsaints-arina-dress/?colour=245&category=22

Justinepants · 29/06/2014 23:29

It's at the top of your budget but I love this. Again, would be a good shape for you, I should think, www.net-a-porter.com/product/440067/Moschino_Cheap_and_Chic/printed-silk-crepe-de-chine-wrap-dress

Justinepants · 29/06/2014 23:47

This is paler than you wanted but is a lovely shape and, in my experience, Ghost dresses dye really well, www.ghost.co.uk/ella-dress-ivory-dr01ba-m12

Justinepants · 30/06/2014 00:04

Could look lovely, Interesting shape www.notonthehighstreet.com/hannaboutique/product/chiffon-dress-monica?rv=e

Justinepants · 30/06/2014 00:14

I rather like this one for a very laid back feel www.notonthehighstreet.com/keungzai/product/luxe-draped-back-dress?rv=e. You could dress it up with some really striking jewellery. (You may have to ignore the fact they're also suggesting it as a maternity dress Confused!)

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 30/06/2014 11:57

There's this, but I'm not sure ankle boots would work with it. Flowery is not usually to my taste, but this one is really nice. I do like the lace ones the best, but sculptural is good too. this one comes in powder blue as well.

TheWorldAccordingToJC · 30/06/2014 20:08

god love the all saints and love that one as well tethers

I'll definitely update with what I go for in the end

I saw this in Oliver Bonas this afternoon and my first thought was 'that would be great for someone having a low key wedding' Grin
