Are Cath Kidston Bags Naff Now?

YesAnastasia · 25/06/2014 20:11

I purchased my first today because I always liked most of them (esp oilcloth) but never got around to it.

Now they're everywhere but I still like them - are they too popular & recognisable now?

OP posts:

Good call sending that flowery CL one back, OP. They are so ubiquitous and boring, let alone twee. Enjoy the alternative one you buy.

Elsiequadrille · 27/06/2014 12:02

I don't think they're naff (and I love the oil cloth back packs for children, very practical). Chances are that you'll see somebody else with one, however, if that sort of thing's a concern.

I almost bought one with sail boats on it earlier this year, for occasional summer use, but never did.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/06/2014 12:17

Well - I love my 'ubiquitous, boring and twee' bags, thanks polyhymnia. And luckily I don't care whether other people are judging me for my choice of handbag - if I like it, I will carry on using it.

But why do people have to be so unpleasant about something which has zero impact on their lives but might be something someone else really likes and could be upset by nasty opinions?

wooly31 · 27/06/2014 13:20

I have at least one. Yes, a bit naff but WIPECLEAN! The sensible part of me understand that the future of the human race isn't really threatened by dirty bags but if you have to put them down on a floor, you can spritz with detox and wipe down. Oh the little joys in life!

TKKW · 27/06/2014 13:30

Well I love most of them. def agree they aren't cool. just make sure the rest of your outfits isn't twee! Not keen on some of the flowery ones but love the spotty and bird ones. some of the prints are too childish as well.
Since you've mentioned them, I had a look and i love the postcard print framed bag.

polyhymnia · 27/06/2014 13:43

Sorry STDG. Didn't mean to cause offence but this is a forum on which people are asked for their opinions on style matters and I don't think my comments were ' nasty' - certainly not intended to be.

The ubiquitous part if what I said is simply factual -there are lots of the bags about, as the OP herself agreed. As for the words boring and twee they just reflect my own opinion, in answer to the original question, but as I said way up thread these things are very personal. Apologies.

They are (in teenspeak) "white girl" fashion

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/06/2014 18:10

What does that mean?

Floggingmolly · 27/06/2014 18:28

White girl fashion? Hmm. Nobody told those mums in ds2's class; should I ask a "teen" to break the bad news?

oliviap100 · 27/06/2014 18:34

I've always been a fan of CK. I got a nappy bag when I had my daughter in 2010 but was mortified at the number I then saw when walking around Croydon! Ha ha :) V popular, but something always draws me back and I am considering a new nappy bag now that I have a 6 week old son. Maybe their London Bus changing bag ...Grin

Heels99 · 27/06/2014 18:46

White girl fashion I think means naff and frumpy

Nerf · 27/06/2014 19:04

They aren't naff. How silly! They are popular and unadventurous, a little badge saying 'slightly more expensive and middle class bag here' and the wearer can fit in and easily identify others of her tribe. They are pleasant/cute looking but have now reached the same popularity rating as converse and superdry - once the mums and dad at National Trust at the weekend have them, any 'cool' or 'unique' factor is lost.
But it's quite exhausting to be cool and unique all the time. Obviously I know this as am both Wink

hollyisalovelyname · 27/06/2014 19:37

If YOU like it that's all that matters.
Cath Kidston's bags are so much nicer than Orla (drap colours) Kiely oil cloth bags.
Though Orla Kiely leather bags are lovely.
I love pastel colours and flowers so Cath Kidston stuff is pretty in my eyes.

CateBlanket · 27/06/2014 20:11

When I buy I a bag I think "Do I like the look of it? Will it do the job?"

not "what does some random person on the internet think about it?"

nor "what will random people on the street think about it?"

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/06/2014 11:05

Cate-me tooSmile

polyhymnia · 28/06/2014 11:23

Yes, me too. But the fact that I've already seen a particular design many times day after day does tend to make me rather bored with/ unexcited by it, even when I liked it in the first place. Though there are of course exceptions which are 'classics' - eg, for me (and everyone's taste is personal), Longchamp Le Pliage

Snog · 28/06/2014 16:24

The teen "white girl" tribe isn't defined by skin colour but by loving star bucks, jack wills, hollister, uggs and taylor swift

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/06/2014 16:36

Whew - I only like Starbucks from that list!

KarlWrenbury · 28/06/2014 16:38

YES

KarlWrenbury · 28/06/2014 16:38

also think the Radley are naff

KarlWrenbury · 28/06/2014 16:40

nothing is a classic.
I disagree withe notion

polyhymnia · 28/06/2014 16:46

Agree with you on Radley

Nerf · 28/06/2014 18:21

Yup Rafley are naff. No idea why.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/06/2014 18:36

The Radley Grosvenor isn't naff.

Cocolepew · 28/06/2014 18:57

I saw lovely Radley wellies today.
I don't wear wellies but if I did it would be them
maybe
