Hobbs Twitchill dress - yay or nay?

TEACUP123 · 24/06/2014 13:22

I'm looking for a formal dress for a night at the opera and a wedding, so I found this one:
www.hobbs.co.uk/product/display?productID=0114-5411-3819L00&productvarid=0114-5411-3819L00-DK%20PASTEL%20BLUE-16&refpage=promotions/sale-highlights

What do you think - elegant or mumsy? I'm 36, size 10 and don't want to look like the mother of the bride yet :-)

It's beautiful! Not mumsy at all! (just don't wear a pashmina on top!)

rhubarbcrumbleplease · 24/06/2014 17:17

Do try it on.
I had my eye on it in navy or pale blue on the JL website but when I tried it on it didn't do me any favours. It was badly creased & there was a lot of fabric round the middle. I'm an odd shape so it might just be me.

MrsAtticus · 24/06/2014 17:22

Gorgeous! Not mumsy.

MrsLettuce · 24/06/2014 17:24

Another yay here.

It's lovely! Very unlikely to looks mumsy unless you've got large breasts.

iwantavuvezela · 24/06/2014 17:29

Love it

Amethyst24 · 24/06/2014 17:55

Not a fan. I think it looks a bit meh and would crease terribly.

CarolineKnappShappey · 24/06/2014 17:57

I tried it on too and it was really unflattering but I am a classic hourglass.

burnishedsilver · 24/06/2014 19:10

Love the black. The light blue is horrible.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/06/2014 19:52

Agree with Silver - black is gorgeous and blue is horrible.

MrsLettuce · 24/06/2014 19:57

Oh yes, I assumed the navy too. Don't like the pale blue much.

whereisshe · 24/06/2014 20:42

I've tried it on and it just didn't work on my proportions (short waist). It's lovely though.

aoife24 · 24/06/2014 21:11

I think it's lovely too, wear some sexy heels with it.

LindaMcCartneySausage · 24/06/2014 21:22

I've got the black one. I'm 38, size 10, hourglass Andonnia afraid it's v mumsy when I wear it. I bought it for work (full time, no time to shop) and it's fine and you dress it up with heels and jewellery but not more. it fitted well enough, but it's pretty dull on and not particularly flattering, esp the mid- calf length. Crushes easily too, so you look a bit unkempt quickly. Being a bit negative, aren't i.

LindaMcCartneySausage · 24/06/2014 21:23

Sorry about the random word in the middle. No idea.

BuggersMuddle · 24/06/2014 21:31

Really depends how it looks on. I wear a lot of Hobbs dresses for work, but tend not to go for the wider skirts because I'm short and they do look mumsy, but it's figure dependent IMO.

flipchart · 24/06/2014 21:34

lindamc. Why did you buy it if it was so bad?

BeeBlanket · 24/06/2014 21:35

I tried one on in a black and white pattern once. It wasn't what I was looking for at the time so didn't get it, but it was amazingly flattering (I'm tall and pear-shaped). The skirt is quite long so perfect knee-length on me, but could be a bit too long (and therefore maybe heading towards mumsy territory) if you're not as tall – but you could always take it up.

PrimalLass · 24/06/2014 21:38

It would look mumsy on me.

BikeRunSki · 24/06/2014 21:44

I think it's lovely, and that pale blue would look fantastic on me. Sadly, no weddings to go to and I mostly work on building sites.

LindaMcCartneySausage · 24/06/2014 21:45

Bought it on the internet. I was desperate for summer work clothes (absolutely nothing to wear after 2 huge babies and 3 years away from the workforce). Work full time with two toddlers, so no time for old fashioned shopping, so tend to panic buy. Kept it because I had nothing else to wear in 27C heat. It does fit and is smart enough for work, but I do feel frumpy in it. The skirt is mid-calf, voluminous and it crushes easily.

coffeeinbed · 24/06/2014 21:46

IT's very unbalanced,
Lots of things going on in front, very boring from the back.

I do like the colour though,

Bluestocking · 24/06/2014 21:53

I've got this dress in the black and neutral print and I love it - in fact, I'm wearing it right now. I think the pale blue could be very elegant with the right shoes etc but it would really show the creases, so maybe not so great for sitting-down occasions like the opera. One of the reviews says the pale blue is slightly see-through so you'd need to check that too and you might end up needing to wear a slip under it.

BuggersMuddle · 24/06/2014 22:05

I wouldn't say it was an evening dress either way.

BeeBlanket · 25/06/2014 08:33

Linda, take the hem up to knee length, it will transform the effect.

SinglePringle · 25/06/2014 09:05

I've tried it on. Size 10, 5'8"' slim hourglass, 32E, and it did nothing for me - too much fabric across the bust and stomach.

Also, the fabric makes it very 'daytime'. As a PP said, it's really not an 'evening at the opera at all.
