How come everyone else can wear a maxi dress

Tiggywinklespinny · 14/06/2014 13:12

But me?

I've tried on loads today, they all make me look like fatter than normal, I'm a brick shape I think..wobbly tummy decent legs bingo arms.

Can anyone help me find one that might suit?

They are very similar to full length nightdresses nocomet, exactly. It used to be a joke that, at the merest hint of sunshine, the Brits would get their shorts on - but now it seems that has moved on to maxi dresses.

WildThong · 14/06/2014 21:49

You are lucky if they suit you, me..I look like this. Well from the shoulders down anyway.

My body shape sounds similar to yours OP and I've given up with trying to find one that looks good. As my legs/ankles are my best feature and currently quite tanned I show them off with a midi dress (v flattering) or knee length t dress style.

motleymop · 14/06/2014 22:13

Do you want it for a specific event, OP?

Sizzlesthedog · 14/06/2014 22:15

I only see strapless ones. I am not small of nork. In fact am ample of norkage, why o' why are they all strapless.

miffybun73 · 14/06/2014 22:16

They can't, they just think they can :)

IMO only ok if over 5'5/6" and a size 10 at the most.

I'm 5'2" and though not overweight look ridiculous in maxi dresses.

libertytrainers · 14/06/2014 22:17

they are hideous on everyone

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 14/06/2014 22:18

Gawd this thread is such a relief!

I love the idea of a maxi dress. Lovely and cool in this weather.

But they just look bloody awfull. And those bandeau ones should all be burned.

idontlikealdi · 14/06/2014 22:21

I LOVE my maxi dresses, decent fabric, semi structured from monsoon. Am 5ft8 and size 16 and they are v flattering.

Try one of these.
Capped sleeves do wonders for my large upper arms, midi length shows off good pins! Wear with some of those support pants if worried about tummy. It's so plain but I get a ridiculous amount of compliments in mine for a £15 dress!

Wadingthroughsoup · 14/06/2014 22:30

I quite like maxi dresses, but have always assumed I would look daft. Can short and small people wear them without looking ridiculous? I am 5'3 and small.

Cherrypie32 · 14/06/2014 22:44

Saw my petite Spanish friend wearing one today and she looked fab. I think just make sure there's not too much material, ie fitted and right length (not dragging along the floor)

Wadingthroughsoup · 14/06/2014 22:54

Thanks Cherrypie Smile

mswibble · 14/06/2014 22:57

I look awful in them too. Far too much fabric billowing about. I have one cheapy from Primark which is passable as it has a nice rope belt and is a thick jersey so reasonably fitted. Wear with a denim jacket to pull the waist in a little more.
All the lovely chiffon or cotton ones make me want to cry when trying them on.

mswibble · 14/06/2014 22:58

And bandeau ones are a definite no no for me. 36dd and even with the best strapless bra I can get my mitts on, I look truly dreadful!

happyyonisleepyyoni · 14/06/2014 23:01

I am 5'8" and a size 16 and have an amazing empire line maxi dress bought for £25 in tk maxx. Although I am much fatter than I would like, the empire line hides a multitude of sins by drawing attention to the bust area.

TheWoollybacksWife · 14/06/2014 23:03

Mine makes me look like a Dalek. I'm 5'2" and curvy. I only wear it on holiday where a few glasses of sangria help to boost my self confidence Grin

enormouse · 14/06/2014 23:18

I'm 5ft 2 and a size 8. They either make me look like I'm playing dress up with my mum's clothes or short(er) and dumpy.

Nocomet · 15/06/2014 01:13

Grin Wooly I love the idea of a billowing fabric Dalek, I have visions of it going round shouting "Exfoliate, Exfoliate".

As not needing hair removal is a maxi dresses one saving grace.

Skinheadmermaid · 15/06/2014 01:26

I look absolutely hideous in a maxi dress and i'm fairly slim. It clings to my biggest bits- my saddlebags and makes my broad shoulders look positively rugby playeresqe.
I don't think they're particularly flattering on anyone to be honest. On slimmer folk they look like a nightie and if your larger or have a big bust you look like a war ship in full sail.

50ShadesOfSummer · 15/06/2014 06:06

I've tried on several in different styles. Even bought one. Then took it back.

I have concluded they are not for me. Just don't look or feel right in them.

Tiggywinklespinny · 15/06/2014 06:38

Ok so dress for me...what about a long skirt.

I have very little confidence body wise and am only really happy to show off my pins in casual shorts or for a special occasion. weirdo

What do you wear on top with a maxi skirt when it's hot! But need to keep arms from flapping about.

Tiggywinklespinny · 15/06/2014 06:39

Correction no dress for me.

OP posts:
noddyholder · 15/06/2014 07:49

I only like them in winter the plainer the better with boots and a big wrap sumner I think they look daft

BravePotato · 15/06/2014 08:06

I can't wear them.

I am 6ft1, and they make you look even taller, not what I need!
