What do you wear for the school run? Do you care?!!!

Dd1 is starting school this week and I know that most of the mums really make an effort over their appearance for the school gates. Some are yummy mummies, some look mor elike on-the-game mummies, IYSWIM. One mum, who looks gorgeous, gets up at 6 every day so she can get herself ready.

I've been pg for so much of the past 4 yrs I've had to kit myself out with a whole new wardrobe. But I know there will be days when I don't get time/ can't be bothered esp. with make-up. But the school gates are very cliquey and I don't want dd1 to feel her mum doesn't measure up.

What do you do about this?

Yes I care. I never want to look like I've just got out of bed - it's not me.

I like hair washed and styled, make up on, decent outfit on (I mean jeans and top but y'know, trendy looking).

I have no problem getting up in the morning - I'm a morning person so it's no big deal to me and I like to feel ready for the day.

Gobbledigook · 04/09/2006 23:01

However, there has never been talk, that I'm aware of, of what other people do or don't do in terms of their appearance at school. It's just not an issue so while I do like to look 'smart' it's because that's how I am. I'm not being something I'm not and I don't care in the least if the person next to me isn't togged out in teh latest fashion.

There is a mix within the group that I talk to - some are totally not with it at all and others totally opposite. They are all my friends regardless.

as you can tell by my name I am a goth/punk chick, am going to check out a new school tomorrow as we have moved house, and I am a bit worried as to what to wear. At the current school, I am accepted for me, but I don't know anyone here.. bit nervous actually

robinrocks · 04/09/2006 23:04

lots of hats and sunglasses

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 23:04

i don't care.

i am thin and small.

i don't go to the school gates. DH does, b/c he is home in the day.

no one cares b/c he is a bloke.

DD1 is so beautiful, w/her long chesnut hair, curly at the ends, and her height and her pea green eyes. that is all anyone sees.

'what a bonnie lassie!'

even her 6-year-old playmate. he sees her and cries, '[DD1's name] is the bonniest lassie in Scotland!'

MamaG · 04/09/2006 23:05

are you a spy robinrocks?

MamaG · 04/09/2006 23:05

so long as expat has her comfiest birkies on, she's happy

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 23:06

No birkies!

Long live Croc's!

MamaG · 04/09/2006 23:07

SparklyGothKat · 04/09/2006 23:09

hey, what should I wear to look around this new school..??

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 23:10

Who cares?

Do people care?

What a bunch of saddos!

So what if someone is Goth or just got up?

Aren't there bigger worries in life?

SparklyGothKat · 04/09/2006 23:12

lol, I think I am nervous about visiting a new school... DS has been in his current school since reception and he is now in yr4, so its been a while..

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 23:14

well, FWIW, sparkly, i could spot your nervousness a mile a way.

and i'd find it endearing and real, so you'd be the person i'd approach for a chat, and ask over for a tea or a coffee.

b/c let's face it, the world would be a boring place if we were all the same.

sparkly, def think you should dress how you normally do, such a distinctive look is a part of who you are. Wish I could be so definite!

sally, wish it was all I had to worry about too. But it provides distraction.

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 23:17

Sparkly, be you! A sparkly cat is a gem amongst the coals!

MarsLady · 04/09/2006 23:20

As someone who would even look gorgeous in a sack I can answer the question simply. Don't care.

MamaG · 04/09/2006 23:21

Sparkly, you can't turn up in a twinset, pearls and a tweed skirt for a few days! I think you'd feel really self-conscious dressed like that.

Thomcat · 04/09/2006 23:21

Sparklygothcat, I'd be drawn to you straight away if you looked a bit punky, as ou describe.
I'd think, ohh fab, how refreshing and instantly like you.
Just thought i'd share that with you.

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 23:23

Sparkly,
I am immediatley drawn to someone brave enough to be what they are.

And why not?

Isn't life too short to hide? Don't you think?

Every day is dear to me. And to so many.

So why not seek out those kindred souls by just being who you are?

If anything, you're comfortable in your own skin.
