30, my hair is half way down my back. Do I need to cut it now?

Hello

I should just make it clear that I mean the hair on my head Grin

There's not much else to say really. I suppose it's the age old question- Am I too old to have very long hair?

I know 30 isn't old, but is it time to get the chop?

Thanks ladies Smile

I'm a fan of the side plait/bunch look.

ithaka · 01/06/2014 17:53

I actually don't understand where people have heard this 'rule' - I am not sure it really exists.

In my view it is far more traditional & conservative for women to have long hair. Most women in their 40s at the moment have mid length layers. Nice, but hardly rule breaking.

merlotguzzler · 01/06/2014 18:09

Wow! Wasn't expecting this response

I think overall it does suit me, but I think something happens to you when you reach 30. The fear of mutton dressed as lamb becomes charmingly relevant.

Not charmingly, alarmingly

Nothing's happened to me since I turned 30 Hmm, still look and feel the same as I have done throughout my 20's, albeit much more confident and happy in myself :D

imip · 01/06/2014 20:08

chicken I do the side plat thing... I've been looking at youtube clips of fish tail braids to do on the side. Um... I'm also doing it for my 7yo dd.... Not on the side for her of course....

AnotherSpinningFuckingRainbow · 01/06/2014 20:19

I don't get this "old at 30" thing.

Old is 70+, surely? I'm 32, am not going to be thinking of myself as old for the next 40 odd years! That's spending most of your life OLD.

WitchWay · 01/06/2014 20:21

My mother started nagging suggesting I had my below-shoulder-length hair cut when I reached 30. She has always had very short hair. I ignored her although did have a pixie/geometric/asymmetrical cut in my early 40s which she absolutely loved - very disappointed when I grew it to my shoulders again & keeps asking me when I'm cutting it short Hmm Now 49 & starting to grow out the dye & go with the grey & planning on keeping it at least shoulder length Grin

AnotherSpinningFuckingRainbow · 01/06/2014 20:21

I speak of frustration as my DM has called herself old for my entire life so far. She had me at 27, and has had a selection of frumpy haircuts and clothes for as long as I have known her. Sad really as she's an attractive woman with a lovely figure.

auldspinster · 01/06/2014 21:31

I'm 39 in a fortnight and my hair is bra strap length and I have no intention of going shorter in the foreseeable future.

SecretNutellaFix · 01/06/2014 21:39

My hair is waist legth at 34.

No way am I having it cut short because other women tell me "long hair is aging"

It's my hair and I'll wear it however I bloody well please. As for the aging thing, every one gets older, what's wrong with that?

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 01/06/2014 21:40

I'm knocking on 40 and my hair is bum length, doesn't look too bad IMO.

The important thing is to keep it trimmed so you don't get that frizzy-cat-lady look at the bottom, I reckon.

Minshu · 01/06/2014 21:40

I only had mine cut short (chin length) when I saw a photo with the back of my head in it - my hair was straggly and thin looking Sad If your hair is in good condition and looks good long, and you look good with it long, why cut it?

You are not over the hill at 30 - you are younger now than you ever will be again!

Msvenus · 01/06/2014 21:41

Mine is bra strap length & I am 38 & plan to keep it this length and I have been told I look 10 yrs younger. My friend who is the same age cut hers to jaw length and she looks much older now. I think short hair can age some women and make others look youthful, it depends on many more factors other than just age.

waterlego6064 · 01/06/2014 21:57

I'm 37 and have quite long hair. I've wondered about having a shorter style- for the same reasons as you OP- but I have really thick, bushy hair and a round face and I can't imagine any short style will flatter me. Plus, I'd obviously have to go in for 'styling', due to aforementioned bushiness, and I'm not really a styling sort of person.

waterlego6064 · 01/06/2014 21:58

Actually no, I'm 36. Hmm

Shesparkles · 01/06/2014 22:01

I'm 43 and mine is almost waist length, it's also very thick, well cut and well hilighted, and I'm not changing it anytime soon!

Coumarin · 01/06/2014 22:03

Hang on. You're 49 Noddy Shock Wowzer!

My hair is bra strap length and I'm early 30's. I was considering getting a long bob and I do think I'd really suit it, but I really like my hair long. It's wavy (if I don't straighten it), so sits better at a longer length.

I think I'll just get more layers and weight taken out. Balls to chopping it off purely because of your age.

Morgause · 01/06/2014 22:07

Had my waist length hair chopped to a bob when I was 21 because I decided I was too old for long hair.

Never regretted it but wouldn't tell anyone else how to wear their hair.

littlepeas · 01/06/2014 22:12

I'm in my early 30's and have bra strap length hair - no intention of cutting it anytime soon.

noddyholder · 01/06/2014 22:44

I know maybe I should know better at my age ;)

SelectAUserName · 02/06/2014 04:57

I'm 43 with bra strap length hair and no intention of cutting it. I have a round face and slightly prominent ears so short hair makes me look like a cartoon character. I want a silvery mane when I'm older.

Velocirapture · 02/06/2014 07:41

I'm 44 and I'm growing mine! It's shoulder length just now.

Bodicea · 02/06/2014 13:40

I have bra stap length hair too. If hair is in good condition I think it's fine. It was a bit longer in my late twenties, not quite waist length but not far off. I went a bit shorter once I hit 30 as I think it looks a bit more polished/ less wag.

Floisme · 02/06/2014 14:05

I think if your face is starting to sag and get jowly then long hair can sometimes drag it down even further. Also, if your hair is getting dry then a shorter cut can help keep it in good condition. However, if you're only 30, I very much doubt that either of those are happening to you!

I do think there's something to be said for reviewing things as you get older. I'm 57 and my looks and body have changed and so different things suit me now. But, as far as I'm concerned, these random 'mutton' rules are as dated and irrelevant as those warnings about not washing your hair when you're having your period.
