After a decade of scoffing mumtrenpreneurs cupcakes we are all now urges to embraces our butter icing curves into garish 50's style dresses. There are a billion of these webpages now and they all look the same

It smacks of 'trying too hard' on a lot of people! (IMVHO)

AmenGirl · 28/05/2014 10:28

Wouldn't say it's a recent thing, been going on about three years now!

Cereal0ffender · 28/05/2014 10:29

It's been going on for ages but it has moved beyond just hipsters and people from Brighton

Ive noticed the rockabilly look becoming very popular in the last few years. It was always around but moreso recently. I suppose like most fashions, they 'explode' after a while and then everyone moves onto something else.

EyelinerQueen · 28/05/2014 10:32

I am a huge fan of vintage and have a general retro look but hate the whole circle dress + wacky print look. It seems to have become a go to for large women who don't even have any interest in the era and it can easily look very costumey.

Can't stand the Vivienne of Holloway and Lady V dresses that are constantly linked to on here.

I much prefer wearing actual vintage and more subtle and carefully chosen repro stuff.

Cereal0ffender · 28/05/2014 10:38

Hipster mums, start making circle skirts, buy up some vintage style swimwear from America e voila a business.

"It has moved beyond just hipsters and people from Brighton"

This made me LOL

squoosh · 28/05/2014 13:11

I'm not a fan of fifties style dresses, hate all that Vivienne of Holloway stuff. I don't mind swimsuits though, but again not the frumptastic 50's style ones.

Anyone with half a curve is advised to try a 50's style frock. NO thank you.

CambridgeBlue · 28/05/2014 13:31

I think they can be very flattering on a curvier shape (but they aren't always) so I can see why people might go for them, but they are becoming increasingly ubiquitous - there were loads of people wearing them at a wedding I went to recently, all no doubt thinking they looked really original!

Someone I know on FB has started selling them and they seem to be going down really well - I think they are a bit of a middle aged Mum going out uniform (and I say that as a middle aged Mum myself). I suppose it's better than wearing some horrible WAG type dress accessorised by a Ronseal fake tan but it's become like many things, annoying because so many people are doing it now.

mrscumberbatch · 29/05/2014 17:15

I've always been a bit vintagey/rockabilly, I think it's funny seeing folk 'dressed up' for events and you can tell that they are wearing it as a costume for the day.

But I think I look great, so I don't really give a toss what others think Grin

HerRoyalNotness · 29/05/2014 17:18

I'm into the swimsuits, the higher waisted pants hide my little tummy pouch and stretchmarks. That's a good thing for me. I'm stocking up on a few sets for when they're out of fashion and impossible to find.

Thepaintedveil · 29/05/2014 19:36

I love the retro/vintage look and wear it pretty much every day. Love Collectif,Lady vintage, pinup girl etc. I have had a lot of positive attention and compliments when wearing this stuff and I am confident enough to carry it off. Can't stand frumpy mum attire of jeans, blazer and converse

Bodicea · 29/05/2014 20:35

I confess I had a vintage/50s hen do two years ago. I liked the look as it it suited my curves (10/12 with boobs)

Have to admit going off the look. It seems to be increasingly worn by people who were formerly goths with shit tatoos.

Thepaintedveil · 29/05/2014 21:30

Well it's a good thing noone is forcing you to where it thenHmm I would far rather see someone dressed in an elegant, vintage style than in a wag-tagstic bodycon dress or the ubiquitous skinnies and heels look-meh.

MaryWestmacott · 29/05/2014 21:47

Former goths with shit tattoos (and a couple of stone to lose) about sums up the average customer for this look!

It's sort of flattering to the larger shape, but this unfortunately means it's on a turn, because you don't really see young thin woman wearing it, so it's increasingly going from being edgy and different, to a bit uniform for the larger mumsy woman at a wedding...

And yes, sewing seems to be the new baking for "making a business out of your hobbies" for new sahm.

ThePortlyPinUp · 29/05/2014 23:39

Aww shit I'm a rockabilly fat mum with tattoos, I shall have to either hide under a rock for the rest of my life or embrace boden.

Thepaintedveil · 30/05/2014 10:07

Grin at embrace Boden portly-not on your nelly!! Btw when I go to vintage events I see many "young, thin women" wearing retro/rockabilly stuff. Imelda May anyone?

Noone is saying everyone has to like or wear this look but lets not use it s an excuse to be bitchy or to fat shame-your issues with your look, size, whatever are yours-don't try and make them mine please.

meditrina · 30/05/2014 10:16

I like to see a variety of things in the shops (and thus onto people). A single style (whichever it is) is dull, and means no new clothes for a year or more.

I think people only really notice when it's clothes they don't like which are ubiquitous.

I've been trying to buy (traditional meaning) midi skirts (that's mid-calf for those who have embraced the new definition) for years. The change in language seems to indicate just as firmly as the lack of availability that such clothes are Out. There's a surprisingly narrow range for sale, despite plenty of shops and sites.

autumnsmum · 30/05/2014 11:13

I love the look and I'm middle aged tattooed and would desperately love some curves

SuperFlyHigh · 30/05/2014 11:15

50's style dresses are great but they weren't all full skirts and the like.

I also wish people would realise that there are lots of other decades with equally fab (and more flattering) styles.

UriGeller · 30/05/2014 11:16

Well when its all over they can cut up their voluminous frocks into triangles for bunting again Grin

squoosh · 30/05/2014 11:20

A 1950's look I far prefer is the pedal pusher and tied shirt look.

Are vintage swimsuits and dresses the new cupcakes?
autumnsmum · 30/05/2014 11:21

Now bunting I loathe ! I must admit I tend towards pencil skirts and halter tops are a no no being flat of bus

autumnsmum · 30/05/2014 11:23
