After a decade of scoffing mumtrenpreneurs cupcakes we are all now urges to embraces our butter icing curves into garish 50's style dresses. There are a billion of these webpages now and they all look the same

Love that look squoosh.

Cropped 50's jeans with sleeveless shirts or sweetheart neck tops is one of my Summer staple looks. Especially gingham. Cannot resist gingham!

SuperFlyHigh · 30/05/2014 12:42

squoosh yeah love pedal pushers... and the blouse... are the trousers back in style again?

Thepaintedveil · 30/05/2014 15:35

Well for all the naysayersHmm-Collectif have gorgeous jeans, the monroe cropped jeans that look great with cropped shirts, tees etc. There is also a discount code-SS25 for 25% off everything this weekend.

Well, I live in Essex so when I wear a 50's dress to go out I do look very different from the spray tan boob-window bodycon look that's so popular around here. I certainly haven't come across many other people wearing them! And I generally get loads of people asking where I got my dresses from. So horses for courses. I'm overweight, but no tattoos.

Thepaintedveil · 30/05/2014 16:36

Snap lovecat-Noone wears the kind of stuff I do when I go out unless I am going to an actual vintage event. All my friends admit they would love to have the confidence to dress as I do and I get a lot of male attention too.

I am going to a vintage/retro event at the weekend and am planning on wearing-

dolores top in white-collectif
red and white polka circle skirt-vivien of holloway
red nurses waist belt
red and white wedges-Clarks
denim jacket or cropped cardigan
flower clip in my hair

Sounds lovely painted :)

MyrtleDove · 30/05/2014 16:45

The historical inaccuracy annoys me the most Grin The very full New Look skirts were late-40s/early-50s, by the end of the 50s it was a much more streamlined, Mad Men type look. There's really not one '50s' look, there were a variety of styles. It's also a shame that people miss the new youth subculture styles of the time like Teddy Girls.

Thepaintedveil · 30/05/2014 17:04

Well I also like to wear pencil skirts and wiggle dresses too myrtle-its not all circle skirts. I also like the 40's utility type suits/dresses or tea dresses for more every day wear. Fashion is meant to be fun afterall.

Melonbreath · 30/05/2014 17:18

Oh pants I'm a walking stereotype. I'm from Brighton and have been wearing 50s style cossies for years, and the rest. I love wearing my freddies of pinewood jeans with a tie up shirt.
I'm also a sahm who does sewing to make ends meet.

Sad

I don't do bunting though, does that redeem me?

squoosh · 30/05/2014 17:26

Yes, the lack of bunting is HUGELY in your favour!

Thepaintedveil · 30/05/2014 18:02

I would love to be able to sew so I could use vintage patterns and make my own stuff. I would also make dd dress in vintage stuff too then!

Melonbreath · 31/05/2014 08:12

Ahem, dd has many party dresses made up from 40s and 50s patterns. I am currently making her a victorian style sailor dress.

Wrong(and slightly off thread) I went to the bbc good food show and can safely say that artisan gin is the new cupcake. (10 samples in as many minutes) Grin. Lovely, gf AND low carb.
