Is this home IPL device any good?

Have been considering investing in a home laser hair removal device for a while. Have very pale skin and dark hair. Tried salon laser treatment about 8 years ago with reasonable results at the time, but desperately need further treatment now.

I just saw this deal on Groupon but have never heard of this product before. Has anyone else tried it?

Don't know about this one. But I love my Philips Lumea. I'm basically hair free now, and seldom have to touch up at all.

MmeMorrible · 25/05/2014 16:42

Thanks. I've been looking at the Lumea and am very tempted but this one is 1/3 of the price. Anyone heard of it - good or bad?

Don't want another useless NoNo type of device!

Watching with interest. That's an excellent price.

MmeMorrible · 25/05/2014 18:21

I know. If there are no negative comments forthcoming I may have to buy one and try it out. Purely in the interests of science, obviously.

Not sure, but like the above commenter- I too am having great results with the Lumea. I reviewed it on my blog: daisydabbles.blogspot.co.uk/ if you want to have a look. I've read some reviews saying that cheaper IPLs tend to be worse quality (bulbs are less powerful etc) so I'd maybe invest in something a little more expensive but where it's guaranteed to work... Xxx

wonderpants · 26/05/2014 08:06

Will Boots really refund after 6 months if you aren't happy with it?

daisydabbles · 26/05/2014 10:42

Well, I called up Boots customer service asking exactly the same thing and they said to go and ask my local store manager themselves. I did so, and their response was yes - they would return it (keep the receipt and original packaging obviously). I think given that you're dealing with big brands - Philips and Boots - it's in their interest to keep their customers happy and they'll be more amenable than smaller brands... So yer, that was a big factor in my decision to get the Lumea rather than a cheaper alternative... xxx

MmeMorrible · 30/05/2014 13:59

I've cracked and bought one...

Will report back on my hirsuitism post purchase...

Haha - yer - keep us updated...It's now a week later for mine and I really think it's working... Some patches in places but really impressed so far! Good luck!xxx

Justgotosleepnow · 30/05/2014 16:44

That looks like the Homedics MeMy Elos IPL system packaged differently.
I bought that one from boots- v pale type 1 skin, v dark brown hair. Did a whole treatment cycle, bought another cartridge. Nope nada. Not effect at all. I was so disappointed! I brought it back and got a full refund.
Very impressed with boots customer service.

Hopefully this system is stronger light than the one I had.

Reading with interest. Do you know if a teenager would be OK to use the Lumea? I'm considering buying one for my daughter and I to use. She's only 16 and so fed up with shaving etc.

kazzawazzawoo · 30/05/2014 20:38

Yes please let us know how you get on with it.

How does it work?

sergeantmajor · 31/05/2014 08:44

I find my Remington IPL pretty effective and am much happier using that than faffing around with waxing

Jellypudmum · 02/06/2014 01:02

Bump

daisydaisys · 02/06/2014 01:29

makati: I think it would be fine for your daughter to use, I don't remember it saying anything in the user manual about age (although to be safe, maybe check on the Philips website?) You'd want to check her skin type is suitable for it (pale/caucasian with relatively dark hair is best).

kazzawazzawoo: it is basically a light therapy - so really strong flashes of light that change the behaviour of the hair follicles, making the hairs fall out and die, and prohibiting regrowth. You have to hold the device to your skin and basically move it around and target all the areas you want done.

I have now been doing it for four weeks plus and I'm really impressed. Also make sure to get a promise from a Boot's store manager that they'll refund it if it doesn't work - that way you've got a safety net...

MmeMorrible · 02/06/2014 17:51

It's arrived today. Will have actual run tonight. Really hope it's good ...

OP posts:
MmeMorrible · 02/06/2014 17:52

That should read 'a trial run'...

Daisy it's great to hear you're seeing results - how often are you using it? I've just completed my first session :)

MmeMorrible · 02/06/2014 23:50

Just tried it out. Easy to use & didn't take too long to treat both legs (ankle to knee) & parts of face & chin.

2ww now to the next treatment & no plucking!!

OP posts:
daisydaisys · 03/06/2014 12:15

MyMeMY: I'm using it every 10 days - I think you're supposed to use it every 2 weeks, but my hair grows so ridiculously quickly that I think the cycle can be shorter for me. In general I'd stick to the two weeks though - I'm just dead impatient!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/06/2014 12:47

I am very tempted if Boots will give a refund!

kazzawazzawoo · 03/06/2014 15:56

How soon do you see results? I couldn't cope if I couldn't shave/use my tweezers as well.

daisydaisys · 03/06/2014 16:05

I saw results in the first two to three weeks. You can shave at the same time so you don't have to sit out a 'hairy' stage if you see what I mean! Only down side is you can't wax or pluck in the interim as it messes up the cycle of hair growth...

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/06/2014 16:07

I'm really tempted now!
