Taking a picture of a celeb's hair to the hairdressers - do people actually do this or will I look like a fool?

Just watched Fearne meets McBustes (for all your early 2000's boy band needs) and really like Fearne's long bob.

I need a hair cut and thought about taking a pic of her with me, but do people actually do this IRL or is it just something magazines tell you to do?

Can't find a recent picture of her hair now, but it seems v similar to what she had in 2011 (according to google images).

What do you think of it?

I have dark brown hair, and not planning to go lighter, if that makes any difference!

I took a picture of Anne Hathaway in. My hairdresser didn't make me feel stupid, but I have been going to see her for years.

I like Fearne's long bob. I think it will look nice in any colour tbh.

CockBollocks · 22/05/2014 21:11

I had fearnes bob for long time, loved it. It's slightly graduated at the back.

Think hairdressers expect celeb pics.

fingersonbuzzers · 22/05/2014 21:24

Thank you. Didn't mean to start two threads on this! Now to find a good hairdresser..

I took a picture of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, the Argentine president, to my hairdresser once and told him I wanted her colour. BEAT THAT.

Doinmummy · 22/05/2014 21:59

I took a pic of Jodie Fosters hair to my hairdresser and came out looking like the bloody Queen Mother !!

I think lots of people take pics in. You have to be realistic though in that you don't have their exact hair texture/thickness etc so might not ( as in my case) get exactly what you bargained for. Your hairdresser should be able to tell you if it's doable on your hair.

PolyesterBride · 22/05/2014 22:03

People do this. I think it's quite normal!

Branleuse · 22/05/2014 22:06

ive done it

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 22/05/2014 22:06

I once trawled a hairstyles websites looking for the one I wanted. I took it into my hairdresser who promptly told me it was all back combing and straighteners and my hair wouldn't hold it. She did know her stuff though and she was right. Grin

I've done it. Showed the pic to my hairdresser & asked if I'd suit it (fairly radical change). She just said 'oh yes!' And plonked me in the chair before I could change my mind. SO glad I did it.

I've done it once and the hairdresser - well, she wasn't very nice - she laughed at me and said noone had done that before and agreed that yes, I was strange.

Cow.

And she didn't give me the colour I wanted.

I go to a different hairdressers now :)

sanssoleil · 22/05/2014 22:26

I often do this-not necessarily celebs but models in magazines-my hairdresser has the obligatory laugh then approximates the style to my hair-Agyness Deyn was a particular success.

I think a lot of stylists find an image easier to work from than language descriptions from non hair stylists [if that makes sense]

Hope you have a brilliant cut that you are happy with.

Valdeeves · 22/05/2014 22:28

I took Gisele Bundchens and came out looking .....nothing like Gisele Bundchen.

Eliza22 · 22/05/2014 22:29

I do it, often. It's a good way of getting the "can my hair do this?" question over to your hairdresser. No ambiguity. A photo is a very clear image of what you want.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/05/2014 23:08

I take pictures and decide what I like/don't like to give me an idea of what would work with my hair/face/lack of styling skill.
Though when I was pg with DS, I asked for hair the same style as Natalie Barnes (Corrie Landlady) but I'm a brunette
I came out looking more Hayley Cropper Hmm

WildBill · 23/05/2014 07:41

I do this, It's a starting point if you are not very good at describing styles.

SunshineOutdoors · 23/05/2014 08:53

I do it, but always with the disclaimer of 'I know I'm not going to look like her, but is there a way you can adapt it to my hair and do you think it will suit me?'

TulipOHare · 23/05/2014 09:22

I always do. In fact I normally have three or four little cut-outs in my purse and end up going "I want this, but a bit longer like this, maybe with this fringe, and layered like this...." I am probably a hairdresser's nightmare to be fair Grin

But I try to be realistic and only pick things that are similar to my hair type and colour and so on.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/05/2014 09:31

I've done this and was made to feel like an idiot. I took a picture of a supermodel and explained I liked the way her hair was layered and would like similar. Celeb is blonde, I am dark so it was an indication of style rather than I want to look like her but the hairdresser took great pleasure in telling me I wouldn't look like the picture. I KNOW I'm not supermodel material, I just liked her hairstyle!

nilbyname · 23/05/2014 09:31

I do it and my hairdressers has iPads for the very purpose, we often spend 10 minutes poring over style pages online

yorkierocks123 · 23/05/2014 12:12

I show mine whole pinterest boards full of celeb hair I like just to totally confuse her

UriGeller · 23/05/2014 12:16

I do it. Ive currently got an "updated Mia Farrow" according to my hairdresser (I took in pic of Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway and Mia in the 60s)

BornToFolk · 23/05/2014 12:25

I've got a whole Pinterest board too! Mainly because my hairdresser really messed up my hair the cut before last....not entirely her fault as I didn't adequately explain what I was after so I thought if I could show her a few pictures of the kind of thing I was aiming at, it would help. And it did, there was no laughing and I liked the last cut a lot more than the previous one.

fingersonbuzzers · 24/05/2014 20:54

Thanks everyone!

Went today and showed him the pic. He was really great and I'm happy with my hair - shortest it's been in years and I like it!

Pic on my profile but no idea if it's visible or not!
