Shorts for under a dress?

ihearttc · 18/05/2014 12:37

Ive got some lovely Maxi Dresses but I never wear them as my legs rub together at the top and make them really sore. Im not big (size 10) but obviously my thighs have other ideas!

I really want some little shorts which will come to mid thigh but all the ones I have seen are either huge control things or cycling shorts which will be too long for me cause Im only 4ft 10.

Any suggestions? Ive tried the deodorant thing on them and it didn't work.

I wear clingy hot pants under skirts to protect my thighs.
You could try folding the cycling shorts up though?

OneLittleLady · 18/05/2014 12:49

Evans do thin, stretchy shorts for this exact purpose. they had them last summer and they were around five pounds a pair. Came in black, white and nude. I've got nude so they don't show through clothes

drspouse · 18/05/2014 12:49

I don't have such a problem (I'm also size 10 and short) but I did more when I was a size 14/16. I have some like this, which are not that long.

Pastells · 18/05/2014 12:51

I wear these under dresses:

www.needundies.com/womens-briefs/sloggi-basic-long.html

They come in white, nude and black. Comfortable and cool.
I know they're not the most attractive knickers in the world but they're much better than chafed inner thighs.

ihearttc · 18/05/2014 13:17

Glad to know Im not alone...Im thinking its actually maybe the height thing which is causing it as well!

I saw those Sloggi ones but I think on me they actually come over the knees which isn't exactly ideal.

I did think about cutting them but thought they then might ride up if that makes any sense?

I assume the Evans ones don't come in a size 10/12? They sound ideal.

Will investigate Primark next week(by which time the lovely weather will have probably gone!)

I really want them to be sort of longer than hot pants but shorter than cycling shorts!

The ebay ones have an inside leg of 8" (they sound similar to the ones I bought, but a different seller). Would that be too long still?

2kidsintow · 18/05/2014 13:24

Evans ones don't come that small, a 14 is their smallest size, but they are made of soft, tights type material so they won't fall off you.

On these threads someone usually comes along and recommends lanacaine gel - you can buy it at the chemists. Or the use of roll on deodorant on the places you might chafe.

I stick to the little shorts myself. I have some that I bought through an ebay seller, but can't find the link now. They come in size 20-22, but I'm a 14 and they fit fine due to the lycra in them.

2kidsintow · 18/05/2014 13:35

If you search for 'safety shorts' on ebay you get lots of pairs of underwear that do come down the leg a bit, with lace at the bottom and in all sorts of sizes. Depending on how far down your leg you chafe, these might be worth a look.

Fairylea · 18/05/2014 13:38

Another vote for the sloggi ones. They have 95% cotton content which is ideal for summer. All the others are mostly nylon or polyester which is awful in the heat. They might be a bit long as you say but I do think they're the best.

Fairylea · 18/05/2014 13:39

Also these... www.needundies.com/womens-briefs/naturana-long-leg-knickers.html

capsium · 18/05/2014 15:21

I wear a culottes slip in hot weather, under dresses and skirts (over underwear) to prevent chafing. Here,

www.amazon.co.uk/Underworks-Pettipants-Culotte-Bloomers-Large-Beige/dp/B0012Y6JFS/ref=sr_1_3?s=clothing&ie=UTF8&qid=1400422775&sr=1-3&keywords=culottes+slips

capsium · 18/05/2014 15:28

^ I have the longer length, also available on Amazon but selected the shorter for you OP, as you said cycling shorts were to long. They are synthetic satiny material but swishy enough not to be hot (I wear cotton underwear underneath).

Furball · 18/05/2014 15:41

Ahem - these are your friend Wink

Nocomet · 18/05/2014 15:53

I love the sloggi ones, but they are long. Men's boxers with flat elastic waist bands may be the answer.

I have resorted to my own very thin shorts on holiday, but they only work under empire style dresses because of the gathered elastic waist.

Nocomet · 18/05/2014 15:56

So, so many women have this problem you would think two lengths of sloggi style long cotton knickers would be a standard M&S item (at least on the web), but all they sell are granny shorts, which aren't long enough.

plum1304 · 18/05/2014 16:56

H and M also had something similar, which should give you the smaller size you're after.

These look quite short www.hm.com/gb/product/27871?article=27871-A but they also had some longer ones with lace around the bottom of the leg in two stores that I've been in over the weekend.

Panzee · 18/05/2014 16:59

I got some from Peacocks a few years backs. I wear them at school under dresses to avoid accidental flash :)

bishboschone · 18/05/2014 17:12

I think you need to search for comfort shorts .

Selendra · 18/05/2014 17:29

I just got these and they are the business: www.bandelettes.com/ but other than that I find just buying boxers can work - cycle shorts can be too hot and tight.

ihearttc · 18/05/2014 19:04

Wow so many replies...huge thank you to everyone.

Glad to know Im not alone-went to Dubai last year and ended up wearing actual shorts the whole time as my thighs were so painful so my lovely Maxi dresses which I purchased especially for the holiday ended up coming up virtually unworn!

Those H&M ones actually look about right...its right at the top that rubs.

Capsium-they actually look really comfy but my maxi dresses are quite fitted and I think they would show underneath.

Will measure my leg when I get small people to bed...8" might be ok (crikey that sounds wrong lol!).

Where did you get them Bandelettes from?

I also have this issue when we go abroad, especially when it is hot and humid. 12y DD finds the same as do other family/friends I know - so think it is a fairly common problem and seems to be regardless of size too.

Thin shorts or leggings are a must!

WitchWay · 18/05/2014 19:49

look at this review of the culotte slip!!

AnythingNotEverything · 18/05/2014 19:52

On a thread here recently someone recommended roll on deodorant. I haven't tried this, but am tempted to.

PrincessOfChina · 18/05/2014 19:57

I'm usually the roll on deodorant recommender. It works well for me.

I also have been known to snip the legs off old tights at the appropriate length for which skirt I want to wear.
