Background:
vegetarian non smoker /non drinker
Recently found out I have a gallstone and cholesterol a bit high so I've cut down on dairy (cheese) and crisps.

But my stomach is very congested and my waist is far too big (which increases my risk of diabetes especially with my age and 2 parents diabetic)

I want to shift my middle. But if I cut out carbohydrates (so no bread, pasta, potatoes) I can't do this long term.

Could I do a short period of veg, fruit, eggs, milk, (is rice ok?)
Already drink lots of water due to hot flushes.
I want to shift some weight before summer, before my gallbladder gets sorted and before I think "Oh I'll cope with it, buy bigger clothes"

I need to step up excercise I know but TBH, with work (P/T) and the broken sleep, I'm too lazy knackered Hmm

Any ideas ?

Go over to the low carb section and have a look.
Low carbing has a massive plus and a massive con.
The plus being the weight drops off fast and the food is the tasty.
The con being you CANNOT cheat - at all - else you will gain weight.
And cheating means any big carbs and sugar.
So it all depends if you can live without sugar for a while.
I did it for ten weeks and it took alot of discipline but I did lose a stone and maintain that loss.

Valdeeves · 11/05/2014 21:37

And yep - no rice, no bread.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/05/2014 21:44

There's a low carb section?
OK , I;ll have a looksie Grin

I can guess what big carbs are , but are there small carbs?
(I'm going to starve aren't I )

I'm 11 stone and though I've lost 4lb , the scales are spitefully unmoving Sad. But though my top and bottom are ok, it's my midriff that's the trouble (though I'm hoping after my surgery, things will change)
Thanks

You will not starve. Not at all. Eat avocados, nuts, butter, cream. Can you eat eggs (as a vegetarian? eggs are brilliant for low carbing).

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/05/2014 22:15

I can eat avocados (I think, not the most exciting veg but I can put them in salad) .
I don't eat butter (don't like it) but I do eat eggs.

I'm going to give it a try next week, need to write a proper meal plan.

(I had a look on Low Carb, was Confused and clicked away)

Go to the LC section. As a veggie, it is hard. I assume you do not eat fish?

BIWI · 11/05/2014 22:27

There is no con about low carbing!

Carbs make you fat.

Ergo, if you return to eating carbs after you've lost weight, you will put weight on again.

The trick with low carbing, once you've lost the weight you need to lose, is to work out how many carbs a day you can eat without gaining weight. Unfortunately the amount varies from one person to another.

Is it the carbohydrates that cause the spare tyre? (That and my laziness and acceptance of middle aged spread )

I don't eat fish, no.

A couple of years ago I gave up chocolate for Lent and lost a couple of inches but that was 40 days.
When I did the same 6 weeks before Christmas and the next Lent it made no difference.

I'm trying that really serious lentil weaver type seeded bread rather than white (for my gallstone situation).

I'll try 7 days of just veg (no potatoes), fruit, eggs , and low fat milk (I use the semi skim ) and I'll see how that does.

Looked at link....no fruit ?

BIWI · 11/05/2014 22:37

No fruit, and lots of fat.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/05/2014 22:39

Oh blimey I can't do that.
I don't eat breakfast for a start,
I can;t abide butter.

I'm going to have to rethink completely.
No LC for me , my bowels would shut down Sad

I really cut it out about a or so year ago before I had dd. Like you I don't eat meat, but I do eat fish. I stopped eating bread and cut down massively on pasta and rice. It has made a huge difference on tummy bloating. I have started again and it has helped with weight loss.

ThisBitchIsResting · 12/05/2014 15:06

It's counterintuitive but it really works. Also try pulses, beans, chickpeas that kind of thing. Switch to brown rice and have a smaller portion, it's more satisfying anyway as it has some bite to it. And yes to eggs! I like low carbing as it's all snacky treat foods to me. But yes no fruit. Nuts and seeds - The Food Doctor does a big jar of spicy seeds that are ace for snacking. Or M and S do wasabi peas. Snack on savoury rather than sweet, peanuts or healthier unsalted nuts, have some boiled eggs in the fridge.

Having said all that, I felt a gazillion times better low carbing that I reintroduced meat to my diet and now I always eat high protein high fat with lots of lovely creamy sauces, I never get hungry and rarely put on weight (size 10) Smile plus I feel healthier and never weak and woolly and bloated.

Ok I'll stop evangelising now Blush

Stokey · 12/05/2014 15:58

I think you can eat some carbs, just depends on the type.
Cous-cous, quinoa, bulgar wheat are better than rice & Pasta. And wholewheat pasta & brown rice are better than the white version.

Nuts are quite fatty depending on the type - almonds better than cashews/peanuts.

specialsubject · 12/05/2014 17:45

what does your doctor recommend?

with medical problems you need medical advice on what to eat and what not to eat, not faddy diets. I really don't think fatty creamy sauces are good for those with gallbladder troubles - or for anyone except as a treat.

goodasitgets · 12/05/2014 17:53

Fat doesn't make you fat

specialsubject · 12/05/2014 18:02

Obviously. Eating too much makes you fat. But fatty creamy stuff is as calorie dense as you can get.

goodasitgets · 12/05/2014 18:14

Somehow low carb works though. I don't count calories, I eat basically what I want (although low carb!) and lose weight.
Recently I've been unwell and eating less but more carb heavy and I've gained weight
Basically I can eat 2000 calories a day of good low carb food and lose weight. Or eat 1200 cals of carby food and stay the same. Plus it's totally changed my body shape

BIWI · 12/05/2014 18:37

specialsubject - please will you stop with the 'faddy diets'? It isn't a faddy diet at all. I get that you don't like it or don't understand it, but please - stop it.

Pusspuss1 · 12/05/2014 20:34

Look, I don't think low carbing is the most suitable diet for a veggie. It just doesn't sit well with your already somewhat restricted food choices, because they really want you to eat loads of meat etc to make the whole thing bearable. I've been veggie in the past and still prefer veggie food, and I know it doesn't easily work with my husband's low carbing efforts! How about trying a weight watchers or slimming world plan instead? I think they have dedicated veggie options. Slimming groups are very effective.
