Matching tattoo & piercing for anniversary? Yes or no?

MultipleMama · 10/05/2014 12:08

DH is going for his tongue splitting next Friday and suggested we get a matching tattoo & piercing for our anniversary (today).

Good idea? Too popular? Too tacky? And if yes, where?

well, as you casually mention 'tongue splitting' I guess you are a heavily modified couple anyway so what's one more?

do it if you like it.

and happy anniversary.

polyhymnia · 10/05/2014 13:01

If you fancy it you obviously don't think it's too tacky so each to their own.

polyhymnia · 10/05/2014 13:01

Yes happy anniversary

Salazar · 10/05/2014 13:05

I think it is tacky if you are a twinset and pearls type couple doing it because you just love each other that much.

But tongue splitting suggests this is your field of expertise, and in that case I think go for it.

OddBoots · 10/05/2014 13:09

Is it a 'big' anniversary? As you are asking for suggestions of where this doesn't seem something you've had much chance to think about so maybe wait until next year when you've had chance to plan and think it throuh a bit more.

mumblechum1 · 10/05/2014 13:16

Do I dare google tongue splitting?

dexter73 · 10/05/2014 13:23

I just googled tongue splitting Shock Why would you do that?

mumblechum1 · 10/05/2014 13:26

Jeez. That is all. Doesn't it give you a permanent lisp?

grumblepuss · 10/05/2014 14:13

No... Matching tattoos and especially matching/his n hers tattoos are horrid.
Name tattoos = death of relationship. Note celebs who have done this and aren't together now.

stripeyblacksocks · 10/05/2014 14:17

Dh and I both have a take on the infinity sign tattooed on our left wrist. Not match match as they are quite different but are important to us.

catwithflowers · 10/05/2014 14:18

Sounds horrible but your bodies, I guess. Personally I would prefer some flowers and to go somewhere nice for dinner Hmm

Christelle2207 · 10/05/2014 14:24

I just googled tongue splitting too. Am genuinely shocked! Without appearing to be judgy can someone explain to me why you would want to do that?

FranksWife · 10/05/2014 14:26

No.

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2014 14:28

If you're already (both) reasonably heavily tattooed / modified then, hell yeah, go for it. Although, TBH, a piercing seems a somewhat non-committal.

No need for matching though, surely? The process and experience tends to carry more meaning and memory for me than an actual image itself could ever convey - I'd think going for matching could potentially detract from the strength of the gesture.

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2014 14:30

What I getting at, I suppose, is that the chances are that you are complimentary personalities (say, bacon and eggs) rather than identical entities (say, eggs and eggs).

MultipleMama · 10/05/2014 14:32

Only body mods we have are tattoos and piercings. DH has been wanting it done since he was a teenager (he's 30 this year) so had plenty of time to research and know the risk. As long as his general health isn't effected; I'm not bothered. There's actually more risk doing reversal. Plus he's having it done by a qualified oral surgeon.

It's not a big anniversary; it's our 5th it's been a really tough year and has brought us so much closer together.

We don't normally rush into this that are permanent and we can always change our mind and wait longer. I'm not 100% sure yet but it does appeal to me. But I've seen so many people with matching ones that do look tacky or too popular. DH wants them to match - don't mind the piercing matching (not much free space though!) but I'd rather the tattoos didn't.

Ach, tongue splitting is no biggy AFAIK - certainly when done by an oral surgeon.

WRT the tattoos, if he's not into what you're into the just wait. If he wants to get a tattoo to honour you, your children and your relationship than that's his call TBH identical / blatantly linked / tattoos in the same location screams of insecurity to me

That said, an acquaintance of mine did these recently and while they totally aren't my bag I 'get' them: his and hers.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 10/05/2014 14:51

What the fuck will it feel like to snog a split tongue? Disgusting I'm guessing.

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2014 15:01

Just remembered this long running thread from another forum I frequent Shock - might some ideas or perspective there that are of use. Love Graeme and Pugilist's tattoos on the last page. Last Sparrow Tattoo.

MultipleMama · 10/05/2014 15:26

We won't be having names or dates, ever. I've already told him if he suggests stars and hearts I'm going to box his ears Grin.

We both want it for the experience. We've had no energy to do anything "special" due to family reasons and DH suggested it as a bonding experience; something for us. Which I like the idea of.

RVPisnomore · 10/05/2014 15:29

No, no, no, no HTH!

MultipleMama · 10/05/2014 15:30

MrsL - ohh thanks! I'll take a look :)

OP posts:
mumblechum1 · 10/05/2014 15:59

Hmm, bonding experience.....personally I preferred it when dh took me to the Maldives for our anniversary. No pain whatsoever involved Grin

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2014 16:00

Fab mumble - and then you both stayed right there in the Maldives for the rest of your life. Wow Wink

mumblechum1 · 10/05/2014 16:02

Grin no. Now we bond over ripping ivy off walls. Highly satisfying and still no pain
