Ugh Some sort of allergy or reaction on my face

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/05/2014 17:38

No idea what has caused it but the skin around my mouth and on my chin has suddenly gone all dry, rough, red and scaly, as if it's been burned. Should I:
a) leave it alone
b) shove Sudocreme all over it
c) wear a mask
d) none of the above?

Might be peri-oral dermatitis. Does any of this look/sound right?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/05/2014 17:57

Nope. No rash - just really dry and burnt looking.

Thank you though.

Those pictures are more severe. Let me see if I can find milder pictures. This? Or this?

JohFlow · 06/05/2014 18:06

Keep it moisturised for about a week and see what happens. But if it starts to spread, becomes really uncomfortable or you're really sure that you can't think of a reason for it; I would suggest a GP check.

Sounds like a mild patch of eczema.Buy a tube of 1% hydrocortisone cream from the chemist( don't say its for your face).Apply a very small amount at night and it will be gone in a couple of days.Probably an allergic reaction to something ( maybe nail varnish) or nothing.

The only thing I can think of is that I put a dab of dd's Biore face wash on a hormonal spot the other day - but that was on my forehead and the nasty bit is at the other end of my face!

I've got Sudocreme, Vaseline or my normal moisturiser. Any use?

I get perioral, it's terrible. If it's around your chin and nose but leaves a border around your lips it could be that.

Passamaquoddy · 06/05/2014 20:10

I suffer with this during the hay fever months and so so my dc's...could it be that? I am taking antihistamines morning and night, make sure I moisturise and use witch hazel gel from boots to calm the irritation.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/05/2014 20:14

Nowhere near nose - it's at the sides of my lips and on my chin. No sign of hayfever.

Put the vaseline on your face... not the other two. If it hasn't calmed down in a day or so go and see a doctor. If you need to use cortisone puts loads on once not a little bit often. I have bad issues with my face and have for a very very long time. Also take an antihistamine tablet.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/05/2014 20:31

Thank you. Will shove Vaseline on and take a pill. Any reason why I shouldn't put Sudocreme on?

I find, and this is my face (we're all different) that Sudocreme burns and doesn't actually soothe my skin. I am a bit anti cream except the new lanolin free ones as they hurt like hell...I've very sensitive. I find petroleum, beeswax balms and oils are more beneficial. If you had coconut oil (or something like that) I would say put that on then the vaseline.

andmyunpopularopionis · 06/05/2014 20:39

Lol . petroleum jelly. Petroleum would but like f*ck!

andmyunpopularopionis · 06/05/2014 20:40

Burn* ... must stop doing this on the phone

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/05/2014 20:45

LOL at, 'but like fuck-that really made me laugh!

My skin is usually okay, so this is odd. No coconut oil. I've got the Superdrug Vitamin E oil, or good old olive oil.

Smile Don't use the vit e oil as that will heal.. ie promote growth but not soothe. You need to soothe it then Heal it. Put some olive oil on that will do.
canny1234 · 06/05/2014 20:52

Sudocreme can actually be used to treat this.I used to work for the company who sells this. Its extremely soothing as it can be used for severe nappy rash.I used to use it myself on psoriasis but it didn't actually cure it for me.The only thing that works is Hydrocortisone ( if it is psoriasis).Emulsifying ointment is also good at treating rough dry skin and is dirt cheap.Petroleum jelly will also work on dry skin if you are not allergic to it( which I am).If you are using hydrocortisone cream on your face you can damage your skin so therefore you use the smallest amount possible. There is so much misinformation on Mn it drives me crackers!.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/05/2014 21:05

Now, now - no arguing, ladies. :)

Must admit that I usually find Sudocreme soothing, which is why I asked. I'm going to start with a bit of olive oil and see how that gets on.

Thanks all.

Try camomile lotion or aloe vera gel to soothe your skin.

andmyunpopularopionis · 06/05/2014 21:53

Yes.. and the inability of some users to actually read a post correctly before making stupid comments drives me crakers... so join the club. I specifically said I find.... on my skin. .. and you wouldn't be biased at all. .lol

I have been told by numerous Doctors, Dermatologists and Pharmacists that you are better off putting on more cortisone once than a little bit often . However I am not going to argue with anyone... my misinformation is after all only based on 40 years of experience of having severe skin conditions. People can do what they like.

Onsera3 · 06/05/2014 21:59

Hydrocortisone 1% is safe enough to use on your face for up to a month- or so various doctors have told me. You could get stronger stuff that might cause thinning of the skin but you wouldn't be able to buy that over the counter. (I've never had a dr or derm prescribe hydrocortisone for psoriasis - they have recommended other ointments)

However, if it IS perioral dermatitis hydrocortisone would do no good and may make it worse. Your dr could prescribe something else to take orally or apply.

Could it be your toothpaste? Does it contain SLS?

I'd go and speak to your pharmacist and make an appt for GP if doesn't clear.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/05/2014 22:10

Thanks all. I'll keep an eye on it for a few days and use Vaseline or olive oil or Sudo and see how it goes.

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/05/2014 17:46

Update - Sudo overnight made it even drier and more scaly. Olive oil this morning appeared to work a bit, but has given me a huge spot. Redness less noticeable, but dryness still horrible.

Thanks for the ideas.
