super frizzy hair abroad

we are going to Ibiza at the end of August. I can't wait but as usual I'm already trying to work out how to manage my hair while away. At home I blow dry and straighten every day to keep it looking okay. This doesn't work abroad. As soon as I go outside it frizzes and I also don't want to spend my lovely holiday drying my hair! If I leave it to dry naturally it looks really horrendous, wide and frizzy. I avoid getting it wet during the day when abroad as I look a fright for the rest of the day but this obviously spoils the holiday to some extent.

Does anyone have any tips on how to manage my frizz abroad? I have a fringe which doesn't help and no matter how I try and wear if up it never looks nice. I have also tried every 'curl' product under the sun. I know it's a long way off but there's nothing like being prepared Smile

bumpity bump bump, 'cause I'd love to know the answer too.

I can't make my friz stay in curls at any point, or stay straight when its damp or windy out.

Currently on L'oreal smoothing shampoo and conditioner, or Auzzie stuff.

Usual at work is scraped back in a pony tail, or in a clip at the base of my neck. Straighteners on fringe.

You got any advance on that for day to day care, even if we don't get holiday advice?

Skivvywoman · 04/05/2014 18:14

Mines is the same and on holiday I put it up in a messy bun

bluebluecow · 04/05/2014 18:28

Skivvywoman, how do you a achieve a good 'messy bun'. My hair is just below shoulder length and I am clueless as to how to get it into a bun. I've even tried a small doughnut thingy but not enough hair to cover it. Because my hair's frizzy even although there's loads of it, it's very dry and fine.

Addictedtosugar, glad it's not just me. I hate it on hols when other women get out of the pool with wet hair and it dries and looks normal and okay Envy. At home I've tried that tresemme 7 day straight stuff and it does seem to work but leaves my hair feeling a bit 'producty'. I also use tigi blow out balm and that's quite good. Along with that it's a case of avoiding damp altogether.

It's odd because everyone says how they'd love to have curly hair and it's true curly hair suits me much better than straight but it's getting the curl right. Almost impossible. Maybe I've been straightening for too long!

I did the mum's race at the school sports day last year. As we were lining up at the start the rain came down. Within 10 minutes I had a mass of frizz atop my head. All the kids in my dd's class were asking her what had happened to her mum's hair Confused. That's how bad it is!

My hairs the same on holiday but it's a shortish bob so I can't really tie it up.
One of the hairdresser ranges do a good spray I think it's in a pink can and it protects styled hair form humidity, they sell it in boots. I can't remember the back but on the back it says it's like an umbrella for your hair.
Also re the bun, look up sock buns on you tube, they come out nice and messy.
I always bloat in the heat too so I'd never get lucky on a "pullin holiday" I look like ken Dodd.

specialsubject · 04/05/2014 18:58

if you want a permanent solution, I highly recommend Wellastrate. Done 9 months ago and while it is obviously growing out, I have gone from frizz to swish.I can use a comb!!

get it done a couple of weeks before your trip and you can leave the straighteners at home.

worth every penny of £150 and five hours. As long as you don't have colour in your hair, ask for the max strength turbo-chemical version.

bluebluecow · 04/05/2014 19:18

special subject, I have bleached highlights so I don't know if that would damage my hair further?

Ken DoddGrin Grin I can definately relate to that. that umbrella for your hair stuff sounds great though. I may have to hunt that down.

going to have a go at sock bun when I get a minute

Have just googled and Lee Stafford's 'Dehumidifier' claims to be like an umbrella for your hair. It's a hairspray type thing.

specialsubject · 05/05/2014 11:01

might be worth a chat with a competent hairdresser - there are less strong versions for coloured/bleached hair. L'Oreal Xtenso is another one that worked for me.

BTW the cost and time varies with hair length, mine is quite long and very very fuzzy

Ruprekt · 05/05/2014 11:06

Rather than products, could you wear a scarf or bandana to keep it back, however the hair looks.

You almost need to let it do it's own thing on holiday, I think or you will spend the whole time straightening it.

I would let it grow, take some clips and frizzeze and some hats!

Justgotosleepnow · 05/05/2014 11:19

Hi look up Pinterest for messy bun & you will find tutorials. I love finding new ways to do my hair. Never found such good instructions before Pinterest!

You could just dry & straighten the front visible part of your hair & then put it in a messy up do bun on holiday. Not too much effort & it will look great Grin

I have two recommendations.
The first is to use this product. It works brilliantly to tame my weirdy frizz, lasts around 2 - 3 months. I'd recommend doing it about a week before you go. You will need to invest in some salt-free shampoo and conditioner, also hair products if you use them. I've been using some carrot stuff I've been getting online that's leaving my hair feeling in great condition.
Next suggestion is this product. IT's the first product I've ever tried that does what it says. It's bloody brilliant. The only downside is that it makes the bathroom floor very slippy after the spray has settled, so I am currently standing in the bath to spray it on, and having to clean the bath afterwards to stop the bath becoming scarily slippy.

lessemin · 05/05/2014 11:53

I have the same hair op and I hate it. When I go in the pool on holiday I have to do the mum swim, breast stroke with head out of water Grin

Anyway, when i was on holiday in Mallorca last year I was looking at hair products in the supermarket and found some Keratin spray. you spray it on wet hair and no more frizz just nice curls even after swimming.

I smuggled it home because I couldn't bear to leave it behind.

I second the Brazilian hair straightening kit from amazon linked above. There are loads of threads about it on here, do a search. It really is the business.

bluebluecow · 08/05/2014 17:00

Those Brazilian hair straightening kits, do they damage your hair at all? My hair has bleach in it and is in okay condition but couldn't take anything too harsh. Also if I used it and go in the pool/sea would it dry naturally straight and not frizzy? Do you think it would last me all holiday without the need to use straighteners? Also could someone recommend a cheap shampoo/conditioner that I could use with it. Sorry for all the questions Smile

My sister used to suffer terribly when we went on holiday, and I always felt smug as mine was not perfect but manageable.
About 3 years ago she had a Brazilian straightening treatment in a salon, it was costly but it was a really dramatic effect. She also has highlights btw. She now has it done about twice a year and her hair is totally different. It never looks frizzy, even though she swims in the sea/pool daily on holiday (and we are talking Mexican humidity). She is careful to rinse it immediately after swimming though and uses the proper products.
I don't know if the home treatments work as well, although I am tempted to try one as I am the one who looks like a walking Brillo pad on holiday now but couldn't afford the salon treatment!

bluebluecow · 08/05/2014 17:23

the salon treatment is a bit out of my price range too. The home kit has some good reviews. Even if it gets rid of some of the frizz on hol i'll be happy

I have my hair straightened using Aveda. Its the only thing that works for me ( having lived in a very humid country).Otherwise you just have to learn to 'embrace' your frizz.

bluebluecow · 08/05/2014 17:45

is Aveda a salon treatment or home kit?

OP posts:
canny1234 · 08/05/2014 17:47

Its a salon treatment Blue.It leaves my hair in really good condition.

Stripytop · 08/05/2014 17:49

Definitely get a keratin treatment. 7 months on my hair is still frizz free, though still wavy when wet. Best £100 I ever spent.

bluebluecow · 08/05/2014 20:05

I would probably spend the 100 if I knew it wasn't damaging and def worked!

OP posts:
bluebluecow · 08/05/2014 20:06

is the aveda about the same price?

OP posts:
Stripytop · 08/05/2014 22:47

Honestly, my hair's never been in such good condition. It was really frizzy before. The hairdresser that did it also advised me to stop having bleach highlights (I hadn't realised my previous hairdresser was doing this). I have also only used organic sulphate free shampoo since the treatment (as recommended) and I have seen another thread on MN where the op felt this had made more difference to her frizz than anything else.

I have saved the money ready for another keratin treatment, but not needed it yet. Ironically, the hairdresser I now go to is cheaper in general for everything else so I feel I can justify the cost.

It's lovely to get nice comments about my hair ( new experience for me) and to finally be able to carry off an a-line bob!
