Lightweight waterproof with (ugh) a hood. Not too warm!

There are always loads of threads about warm waterproof coats, but I need the opposite! I am a v hot person (in the sweaty, rather than the glamorous, sense) and need a lightweight waterproof for spring/summer that won't cook me gently.

And it needs to be waterproof and have a hood. I have finally, three DCs in, accepted that I can't carry an umbrella and marshall them all on the school run.

I'm thinking some kind of lightweight parka, but the fashiony ones are usually not terribly waterproof are they? Help!

I am slightly alarmed that my favourite one thus far is the Next pacamac! Went hunting for alternative colours and found a nice Burberry version, a snip at £450 Shock. That grey hooded trench is nice too.

Is this any good? Smile

mothermirth · 30/04/2014 19:09

Meant to say… it's very light, completely waterproof and I love it not too ugly Smile

Seasalt's not cool but very waterproof and designed for the warm wet south west.

TheJumped · 30/04/2014 19:49

Oh yes Beehatch has linked the hooded trench I was thinking of. But if practicality is number one then yes, just bite the bullet and get a ridiculously practical jacket. You don't have to wear it often to get good cpw - I only wear my Merrell a couple of times a year but on the days I do it's because it's torrential rain. It'll last literally forever hidden away in the back of my wardrobe I got a Zara down coat before succumbing to the Merrell and it was getting soaked through that and 2 layers of clothing en route to a toddler group that made me think stuff it. It is quite luxe to be dry I think Grin

This Patagonia coat is lightweight and robustly waterproof. I have the black version which is quite smart.

any good

Cycling trench coats. Also probably give you loads of arm movement for running about with the kids.

Hopefully · 01/05/2014 13:30

Cycling trench is actually quite nice Shock but I don't think has a hood, unfortunately.

Oh, the Patagonia one isn't totally horrible actually. I'm holding out hope that it may be possible to be vaguely stylish and not wet.

This is a bit marmite, but I've wanted a bright yellow fisherman-style coat for ages and I think it's lovely. Comes in other colours too.

The only thing stopping me is that my kids have yellow fisherman raincoats too, far too matchy.

trixymalixy · 01/05/2014 13:43

protected species also do a parka

I'm hopfully going to try one on on Saturday as it looks like exactly what I need.

Otherwise I'm going to replace my Aigle trench that's too big with their new shorter versionhere

ScrambledSmegs · 01/05/2014 13:45

Oh, you could always buy a fashiony one and spray it liberally with Scotchguard. It might change the texture of the fabric a bit though.

Onlyconnect · 01/05/2014 13:45

Is this too frumpy?

trixymalixy · 01/05/2014 13:46

Those cycling trench coats are nice. They do have hoods.

Hopefully · 01/05/2014 15:10

I really like the seasalt macs, but they are too sweet for me - anything remotely girly/cute/retro inspired looks bloody awful on me. My best coats are biker jackets and long winter overcoats.

Liking the protected species parka a lot though. Crap colours for me, but I think good colour and style and waterproof may be a bridge too far.

I love the protected species one too. But am a bit Shock at the price.

So the great coat hunt continues.

I decided I was never going to get a waterproof parka that I loved and could wear as a summer coat by choice, so I have ordered a few non-waterproof coats to try, including this M&S one which i am holding out high hopes for as a school run coat.

Waterproof-wise, I am contemplating a Didrikson Tilde (has anyone got one? Is it going to cook me?), the protected species parka (am slightly put off by the sizing, as am a 12-14 atm, and the colour isn't good for me, but the style is great), a random HoF find (but I can't ascertain if it's actually waterproof), a Next one which also refuses to make any declarations of waterproofness, and a frightening orange one.

Oh, and the Next one linked upthread.
