A warm and stylish dog walking coat

AnotherTry · 27/04/2014 12:24

I'm not a fashionita, but have vowed to feel good in every outfit I wear rather than wearing the same old comfy clothes and looking a mess.

I'm struggling with my dog walking coat - have a warm skiing type anorak that keeps me warm, but makes me look 2 stone heavier than I am.

I'm 50s, tall, slimish

Any ideas?

Is this dog walking across country in the wet, rain and mud, or sedate walk around a park? Strangely I think it would also be good to know what sort of dog you are walking - a Staffie needs a different sort of owners outfit outfit to a labrador. ( I have Staffie)

littlewhitebag · 27/04/2014 12:36

I am a country girl with a Lab. I wear an old wax jacket most of the time. In the winter i have a Didrikson which is the warmest, driest most windproof coat i have ever owned. Not sure either is stylish but round here these coats are what all the dog walkers wear.

" a Staffie needs a different sort of owners outfit outfit to a labrador."

Out of curiosity, why is that?

I haven't got a dog but like the idea of having one and a stylish dog walking coat to boot Smile

Anyway OP, imo you could either go the Barbour route but esprit and ditrikson www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/didriksons have also good and robust coats.

Fionalikespinklemonade · 27/04/2014 12:38

Xpost re ditrikson.

TrinityRhino · 27/04/2014 12:39

ok I need a new coat
I have a very large white boxer

what coat do I need

not boring, funky even please, white goes with anything Grin

littlewhitebag · 27/04/2014 12:39

The Clark Parka is the one i have. It's too mild to wear it now though. Barbour's are popular dog walking coats. Must be cool as my 16yo has one!

MelanieCheeks · 27/04/2014 12:41

I have a short green waxed jacket. I don't like belts or hoods, but I do like pockets for hands, phone, dog treats, poo bags etc.

TrinityRhino · 27/04/2014 12:42

holy hell, that link is to mega expensive coats

littlewhitebag · 27/04/2014 12:49

Trinityrhino Yes they are but if you want to remain warm and dry on the beach on the east coast of Scotland during the winter it is a small price to pay! The wind and the horizontal rain is something to behold!

Fionalikespinklemonade · 27/04/2014 12:50

Yep, they are £££ and I would most definitely wait for the sales. I also think there are cheaper outlet options where you could find a ditrikson for less.

higgle · 27/04/2014 13:09

Well, Butch and I look more of a couple (he is Black and White) if I wear a black Belstaff waxed jacket than my faded green Barbour. Alurcher on a piece of string brings still different sartorial requiremnts....(I'm only being silly )

Well if it's a Stafffie I believe the required outfit is hoody, low slung jeans and trainers, and if it's a Lab you want a Barbour, cords or tweeds and Hunter wellies.

Frenchfemme · 27/04/2014 14:32

I have a Spanish Water Dog, do I need Matador pants or a Flamenco (sp?) outfit?

Fionalikespinklemonade · 27/04/2014 14:43

French, how about

A warm and stylish dog walking coat
Fionalikespinklemonade · 27/04/2014 14:45

For your d(dog) and

For you?

A warm and stylish dog walking coat
Fionalikespinklemonade · 27/04/2014 14:47

What would a cocker spaniel owner wear then? .

Frenchfemme · 27/04/2014 15:10

fiona I'm not sure that pink is Hercules' colour, but I love the pictures! For a cocker spaniel owner, how about a sharp blazer and a trillby (plus trousers of course). Actually, the way the weather is today (SW France) I am veering between vest and shorts and full foul-weather gear. Hope its better where you are.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 27/04/2014 17:10

Well I'm a working cocker owner and I'm usually found in jeans, shirt, scruffy boots and bodywarmer. I could do with a few tips as to whether this is acceptable or not.

Ddog will be very smart tomorrow as he's off for a wash cut & blowdry so I need to smarten up.

Aster · 27/04/2014 21:22

Another I wear a Merrell Wakefield. It's an insulated one but it's never too warm - I just adjust the other layers accordingly. It isn't bulky and it's quite light. It has been
a great buy and has a good hood.
For summer rain I wear a hat and light weight pacamac.

46direct · 27/04/2014 21:30

I love the look of the didriksons
I am a walker generally and not heard of the make
How does it compare to the major well known outdoor makes like montane, rab, Etc?

cheapskatemum · 27/04/2014 21:57

Love the turn this thread has taken! 5' 6", size 10/12 dogwalker of 2 Llahsa Apsos in need of style advice here. Walk in Suffolk countryside. would particularly appreciate pictures (visual learner). Thanks in advance.

TrinityRhino · 27/04/2014 23:20

Littewhitebag
I'm on the west coast of scotland and I walk her on the shore right outside my frontroom
horizontal rain and wind is normal round here Grin

I just get freaking cold and wet
I would love to find a nice, warm coat

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 27/04/2014 23:32

Llahsa Apsos you say? They're fluffy aren't they? I reckon you want a nice warm fleecey fleece. Grin

AlpacaYourThings · 27/04/2014 23:45

Ooh love the Didriksons on that link. I like this one I'm just not sure if it will clash with my dog?

I have a golden coloured Shih Tzu. I currently fashion a nude coloured Barbour which complements her colouring (and mine) perfectly.
