How often do you colour your hair?

HaveAGoodDay · 26/04/2014 17:59

The last time I coloured my hair (I do it at home myself) was 3 weeks ago. No matter which brand I use, and it's a permanent colour, it always seems to fade, so at around this time, it looks as though it needs to be re-done.

The last colourant I used was a permanent brown Poly Colour Tint by Shwarzkopf. I was really happy with the result, which seemed to last. However, as time has gone on, I can see it has faded somewhat (I know most dyes do) so most if the richness & depth has gone.

But this is a permanent colour, surely they should have some staying power?! I know my hair isn't in the best condition, it's dry & seen better days but it should still take colour?

I choose natural or light browns, I don't go for medium or dark browns as I know from experience they can result in near blacks - and it would be just my luck if that i use a darker colour & it won't fade! I usually apply the colour to the roots first & leave that in for a bit then take it through the lengths.

So can I be colouring my hair every 3-4 weeks?

I need to do mine every 4 - 5 weeks

I getting greys as well as colour fade

Tried loads of colours over the years and never found a decent or long lasting home colour

Custardo · 26/04/2014 18:03

not as often as i should, i think the same as you - the greys come through after about three weeks, by four weeks its visible and then at 6 weeks i get my arse in gear and do it becuase i hate doing it

i use the loreal 10 min stuff ...becuase it takes 10 mins!

DidoTheDodo · 26/04/2014 18:06

I use a semi permanent(also light brown for the reasons you outlined) about every 6 weeks. By which time I am very aware of the greys but my lovely husband says he can't see them!
I wondered whether to use a permanent dye but it sounds as though there'd be no advantage.

BlueJean · 26/04/2014 18:08

I leave mine as long as possible grey stripe of shame Blush and have tried loads of different types but they are all much the same in longevity of colour depth .

However I did think the Olio one lasted for much longer when I first used it. The next packet didnt seem to last quite as long though. Could be down to user error of course but it put me off a bit spending £6 when the end result was the same as the £2.50 one from Lidl/Aldi.

FurryDogMother · 26/04/2014 18:11

I'm the same as Dido - I use a semi-permanent every 6 weeks or so - hair grows roughly half an inch a month, so my greying roots are definitely showing after 6 weeks! A hairdresser once told me that semi-permanent can actually penetrate the hair follicle more deeply than permanent, and it's been my experience that red-shaded dyes never really fade to nothing. Currently trying to grow out the reddish colour and replace it with a light brown - I'm getting there!

MrsBungle · 26/04/2014 18:14

I get mine done around every 12 weeks at the hair dresser. No gray but my roots are a bit of a disgrace at that point!

HaveAGoodDay · 26/04/2014 18:42

I don't have any real noticeable root re-growth at the moment to whinge about either, just don't like my natural colour much!

I do think salon colours last a lot longer! But because of a cock up once before (that & steep prices) hubby refuses to let me have it done at a salon again! I just think its awful when you've had your hair coloured at the salon & it turns out wrong & you think 'sh!t' I've spent £££ as opposed to doing it wrong yourself!

I'm itching to dye my hair now but there's probably no real need to! If I can leave it and sit on my hands....

What shampoo and conditioner are you using? They may be fading your colour. Deep conditioning masks are the worst for this.

MeYeahMe · 26/04/2014 18:45

Who is your husband to stop you having your hair done when and where you like? Confused

Raia · 26/04/2014 19:34

Every 4-6 weeks here. Like you I use natural/light brown permanent home dyes (the John Frieda foam one recently). It fades to a dark blonde with reddish tones within a month, then the grey roots show through at about 5 weeks. I'm not all that happy about putting god-knows-what chemicals on my head this often but vanity wins out every time Confused

Milmingebag · 26/04/2014 19:44

As far as I understand the peroxide developer used in perm dye to penetrate the hair lightens the hair underneath and over time repeated use makes the hair more porous so it becomes anything but permanent.

What is your natural hair colour like?

I have to tackle mine every fortnight as I have a 3/4 pure white ring around the front of my hair that is noticeable within days.

Currently considering going natural.

Can a permenant and a semi-permenant be used safely one after the other.
For example - I dyed my hair in December,a Superdrug permenant ,not the 10 minute quickie, don't like them.
So there was a load of grey - I had it cut, coloured with a coppery brown permenant; didn't like the cut. too wavy after the layers, had it cut short.
My hair is now all the new colour, the older darker colour is gone.
But when this dulls/fades, can I put a semi-permenant to lift the colour, let that wash out , washing daily.
Then go over in 6 weeks with another permenant- or will it fall out suffer.

Milmingebag · 26/04/2014 20:11

Yes you can.

Flowers

There seems to be more choice in Semi-P so, I'll be browsing Grin

HaveAGoodDay · 26/04/2014 20:40

MeYeahMe - it's not that he'd actually stop me from going to a salon he'd just really whinge about it- I can't blame him, the time before last, they got the colour wrong so I never went back. Then just before Christmas I went to a different salon & spent £££ on a bleach bath & a colour because I wanted a vivid copper colour - then i changed my mind a month later, returning to brown! So he's not a fan of me wasting money shall I say! But I'm settled on the colour now just wanting something to last a bit longer. I use shampoo & conditioner for coloured hair & only use a intensive conditioner once a week.

Semi permanent did not cover my greys for long -- would wash away quite quickly.

MrsEboJones76 · 26/04/2014 21:25

I started colouring mine myself last year. I have lots of greys. I used a permanent mid brown shade close to my natural colour. All brands seemed to fade and after around 3 weeks grey roots would be visible and by 4 weeks I had to colour again. I hated doing it.
I've since gone back to having it highlighted at the hairdresser. I don't seek to cover all the greys, just blend them in with blonde highlights. I go 6 - 8 weeks between appointments.

I don't like using permanent too often but my hairdresser said that repeated semi permanent created a build up of black tones at the ends.

Which kind of conditioners are best?

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping · 26/04/2014 21:53

I normally try and do mine every 6 weeks because of the grey hair. I went purple for New Years eve and am growing it out so did a light brown semi-permanent one 2 weeks ago. It covered really well to begin with but the grey is starting to show through already.

I get bored with my hair colour quite often so change it a lot.

MrsDavidBowie · 26/04/2014 21:55

Every 5-6 weeks at a salon.....covering grey. I have a warm brown .

Belshels · 26/04/2014 22:25

I'm interested to know about conditioners as I use the mask types in a pot all the time. What does everyone else use?
I teach swimming and am in the pool several times a week so need a decent conditioner. Think the swimming must fade my colour too. I have it done by student at salon every 4 weeks for next to nothing:)) but they do take a bit longer!!

SirChenjin · 26/04/2014 22:30

Every 4 to 6 weeks - I now appear to be a very unfetching shade of sludge with about 70% grey from what I can see in the regrowth, so light ash blonde is applied regularly. Can't justify £70-odd quid every month at the hairdressers, so L'oreal is my friend.

Fcukfifa · 26/04/2014 22:44

I think using sls free shampoo and conditioners help keep colours longer, the cheapest I'm aware of is tresemme naturals range. Also use cool water.

Has anyone tried the 'adore' range of semi colours? They are a true semi which means you don't add a developer to it, so absolutely no ammonia etc.

I used one in mocha over my already dyed brown brown hair and it was beautiful, so shiny and lasted a while, really cheap too.

However, I aren't sure what it's like over greys.

At the min I've got ombré hair, so my roots just blend in and then goes blonde towards the end, haven't coloured my hair since November!

Had to give it a break after bleaching it pure white before having pastel purple hair last summer, that WAS high maintenance!

LadyWithLapdog · 26/04/2014 23:14

DIY every 3-5 weeks.
