I think you have to try the dresses on -- COS/ Jaeger, etc and see what suits YOU. If you have time I would go to selfridges, etc and try on a bunch. You can try on both high end and high street.

I cannot do round necklines, they look dreadful on me, and I'm not that into "slinky" at the moment. I do like the Alice Temperley dress linked to above!
