Well someone had to do it....

Herbs Grin. I was too hot - throw off covers - too cold - repeat cycle.

herbaceous · 28/04/2014 16:35

DS superkeen to go to breakfast club! So that's a result.

Found out that a friend in the choir who works for the IoE is in fact in charge of literacy PGCEs! So have picked her brains. She pointed out that as the parent of a young child, my entire life is reflective practice. Though I'm now trying to think of an example...

QueenQueenie · 28/04/2014 16:41

What about an example of how children learn by doing rather than being told iykwim. Or the importance of trying and failing being part of learning - you know that toddler thing of "me do it!" and they're right because that's how they learn. ..
Or maybe I've completely misunderstood the concept!

I didn't wake up at 3.30am but I was certainly still awake at gone 3.00am. The problem is I sleep all weekend, bugger up my sleep pattern, then lie awake looking at the ceiling on Sunday night.

But I did manage a surprisingly sprightly lady jog this morning. I always run better the tireder I am (more tired?).

Re: sewing machine - tis in my genes, somewhat. DM is/was a fashion designer. My current sewing machine was a 16th birthday gift, but doesn't see a lot of action nowadays to be honest. My school was also hot on Needlework, and we were expected to turn in two homemade garments each senior year (and one had to be modelled ).

herbaceous · 28/04/2014 16:53

I'm a bit 'anti' the whole concept, as it seems to be a cumbersome and convoluted way of doing what we all do naturally - learning through experience. 'Ooh, that went well, I'll do it like that again.' But maybe there's something in it! I have been known to be wrong.

I think 'reflective practice', in this instance, is supposed to be about the behaviour and goals of other people, so learning how best to interact with him to get him to stay in bed, eat his greens, be polite, etc. "Hmm shouting didn't work, maybe I'll be nice next time." Kind of thing.

Oh god, I don't know...

herbaceous · 28/04/2014 17:03

Christ, my encounters with sewing machines have always been unmitigated disasters. In our year of sewing at school I think I managed a peg bag and a circle skirt. The peg bag fell apart pretty promptly.

Every time I turned the machine on, the bobbin would get in a huge tangle, or it would run away with me entirely. I couldn't get the hang of doing things upside down and inside out.

I do have a sewing machine, but it's an antique one of my grandmas. A Singer, all gilded and beautiful, in its own cabinet. Currently used for putting the stereo on.

DS got straight into his sportacus outfit on arriving home, and is now watching Frozen AGAIN.

bigTillyMint · 28/04/2014 17:18

CV, mine was a 21st birthday present. Sadly it doesn't seem to get on with DD and her art textiles.

I came home to find DS and little next door neighbour playing cricket in our postage stamp garden amongst my lovely new plants. It didn't
T do much for my blood pressure!

Cremolafoam · 28/04/2014 17:50

That's weird. I also woke up in the middle of the night in a lather and flung the bedroom windows open.

Stropperella · 28/04/2014 18:54

I can report that Day 1 of Art GCSE went well, apparently. All is currently calm. Maybe I should get me some of that Rescue Remedy chewing gum Hmm :)

Herbs, best of British for tomorrow. Don't think you'll need it, though. Well, maybe just for the journey there rather than anything else. Grin

Auriga · 28/04/2014 18:59

QQ congratulations on bringing off your Big Event successfully. Wouldn't have guessed you were anxious about it, you seemed calm and must have been exceptionally well-prepared.

I'd have loved to come but had too many neglected tasks at home. Having said that, stayed up till late ironing all DD's clean uniform, only to find it scrumpled up in a ball on her bed this morning Angry. Had been drawn to her room by a suspicious smell, which turned out to be the neglected cat litter tray Angry Angry. I now regret that I relented over letting cat sleep in her room.

On the other hand...she's been promoted to the symphony orchestra Grin so will get away with it this time

Blackduck · 28/04/2014 19:04

Good luck tomorrow Herbs....

QQ glad the event went well. I am slumped on the bed trying not to think about work tomorrow...

addle · 28/04/2014 19:20

Hope everyone sleeps well tonight

bigTillyMint · 28/04/2014 19:48

Stropps, that is great news! Hope tomorrow goes just as well. I am definitely going to find that Rescue Remedy gum!

Well done to Auriga junior!

And for you HerbsSmile

Cremolafoam · 28/04/2014 20:39

Herbs I've got everything crossed for you tomorrow.
Yes, QQ very well done pulling that orf so well!
Auriga - bleurgh @ litter tray but congrats to the wee'un

Cat now dribbling mrs S and avoiding everything except the Lactofree milk and tiny morsels of not naice ham.
Off to the veterinary tomorrow . Now convinced of gum/tooth/oral problem
of great and ruinous expense
Poor kitty.....

lalsy · 28/04/2014 20:52

Well done Stropps dd! It is great if the first one goes well. And congrats QQ.

I am going to have a large sherry and a very early night. My particular sleep disturbance last night was being very cold, shivering and shaking (heavy period). Lovely. Tomorrow it is ds' birthday and I have plumbed new depths of dullness with his presents (have warned him and reassured him that even I don't think a stapler would be a good present for a 15yo).

BTM, I wonder if your dd may feel less anxious once she has an exam or two under her belt? Am I right she is yr 10 and doing a few early? My dd just told me she was stressed (about getting the grades for university entrance) and off to watch Star Trek.... I think this is partly noise and fury to make herself settle down and do the work and avoid room tidying duties. Anyway, I think once they get going and realise they are exams on things they have studied, not the stuff of nightmares where you forget your pencil case and your skirt falls off while people ask you questions in strange languages, it does get a bit easier.

herbaceous · 28/04/2014 21:20

Our local facebook group is awash with tales of tube strike days meaning all trains and buses are unboardable. The dippy admin woman on the course says if people can't get there, they can reschedule, but not sure if that means try but fail to get there, or what...

Still feel totally unprepared. My inner saboteur is arising...

Auriga · 28/04/2014 21:49

Yes, well done to Stropps's DD and hope it all continues with minimum drama (unless it actually is Drama, sorry can't recall which GCSEs she's doing).

Good luck Herbs, how did presentation to DP go? My DH cheerfully sat through my last big talk several times. He was a big help, even though it's far from being his area.

SheherazadeSchadenfreude · 28/04/2014 23:30

Good luck Herbs!

Well done to Stropps' DD - long may it continue!

And congrats to QQ for the fundraising. I got involved with fundraising once, and it was the worst thing I have ever done, apart from being class rep in reception, and getting "see me" from the teacher in DD2's home/school diary.

CointreauVersial · 28/04/2014 23:41

Fingers firmly crossed for you, Herbs. I hope the commute isn't too hideous.

QueenQueenie · 29/04/2014 00:00

Really well done to your dd Auriga, and fingers crossed Stropps for the calmness continuing...

Go knock 'em dead Herbs. Sending you many positive vibes.

Blackduck · 29/04/2014 05:55

Fingers crossed Herbs!

hattymattie · 29/04/2014 05:56

Go for it Herbs.SmileSmile

bigTillyMint · 29/04/2014 06:15

Herbs, strap your trainers on and get it over and done with!Smile
And if you have survived your presentation to DP, the interview will be a breeze. I can't think of anyone worse to do a presentation to than DH!

DD was absolutely lovely last night (after she had slept for an hour or two when she got in) and snuggled up with me (and DS) on the sofa to watch One Born. It transpired that she had got 9 (out of 10) for the first part of her History CA. So Lalsy, I think you are (hopefully!) right and she may get less stressed if she does well in the ones she is taking this year.

MrsS, what did you do? Get them all drunk before school pick-up?!

OMG, my children have finally gone back to school. This holiday felt like the longest ever! And I'm back to work, but not braving London today.

Good luck Herbs - you are exactly what they are looking for and they'll see that when they meet you.

Well done mini Stropps and good luck for day 2 of Art. We have our Art marathon on Thursday and Friday of this week, so I know exactly how you feel.

Good luck with strike journeys today (for those of you affected).
