Well someone had to do it....

Stropperella · 26/04/2014 09:51

Glad to hear the crepey crew have been caning it again :) No wine here last night either. Dh had to be up early this morning - and "early" is generally a totally alien concept to him - to go to a recording studio with his band. He was all excited. Grin

Ds returned at about 4.30pm yesterday from a busy 3-day outward-bound trip with the school. Knackered and filthy, obviously. And highly contemptuous of various members of his class who had done "screamy crying" at various points. Dd insisted on coming to pick him up (awww) and the dog was ecstatic to see him again. Dog spent a lot of the last 2 days standing in ds's room with his tail down, shaking and making an odd "meeeooooooaaaaaarrrrrrr" sound. I understood this to mean "the boy is lost and gone forever. Oh woe!" Ds had to drag himself out of bed early this morning as he is doing a puppet-making workshop for something connected with the local arts festival. Have just taxied him there and returned to a) exercise dog and b) take dd to her lifesaving class.

Any ideas about what to give the man who has everything for his 80th birthday? Budget - somewhat restricted. He has a house full of books, a cellarful of wine and doesn't like frippery.

Stropperella · 26/04/2014 09:52

ps: Your house sounds fabulous, wilbur! Hope the film crew are behaving themselves :)

Stropperella · 26/04/2014 09:54

pps: I actually quite agree with beachy's dd about that dress. But otoh am not much of a dress connoisseur..

motherinferior · 26/04/2014 10:00

I had a stupid row with DP about orange juice Shockand really should have come out rather than sulk and fall asleep deliberately on the sofa.

bigTillyMint · 26/04/2014 10:03

Yes, looking forward to Auriga's beef welly blog!
Surprisingly unhungover here. Really enjoyed last nightSmile
Addle, what was that book you were recommending (sieve for brain - will PM you and BD about the apartment now!)

Strops, awww at dog. And sis! Was snurking at an "oldies" jazz band (who were very good) on the Charles Bridge in Prague and thinking of all the DHs of friends who play in bands!

Beachy, the dress is lovely and I bet she looked fabulousEnvy

Just caught up with a friend in the gym, had builder round to quote on kitchen and am off to meet a friend for coffee and it's only 10am!

QueenQueenie · 26/04/2014 10:12

Go BTM. Impressive!

Feeling spritely here too. Lovely to see everyone but sorry I didn't chat to you Addle and Windy more before you went.

Stropps, there's nothing as tragic as a miserable terrier - mine does a very good end-of-the-world-hangdog thing if something terrible happen to her like everyone else going out / being made to have a bath etc etc.

Told you to come out with us sorry to hear about miserable evening MI but interested in how you can have an argument about OJ...

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 26/04/2014 10:16

Blackduck · 26/04/2014 10:22

I am tres packed train (it goes to Oxford so is full of tourists and no seat reservations - I am brazening it out!)

Oh god. OJ row: this is mainly because in frugal/cheapskate fashion I have switched part of our inordinate food spending to Aldi rather than Ocado. Thus Aldi (perfectly drinkable) juice rather than pricey organic juice. Nipped to Aldi to do supermarketbloodyshopping after supper. Shelves uncharacteristically bare, and the only OJ was made from concentrate.

At this point I recalled (a) discussion at some point with DP where I swear he said the insistence on non-concentrate juice is a fabrication (see previous refs to DP's manly insistence on the fact his A level zoology trumps my 10 years as a health journalist) (b) recent childish strop from DP when I bought other sorts of juice but no OJ (apparently this signifies not noticing his habits and desires and so forth Shock). So I went for the concentrated option. Doesn't matter to me - I've stopped drinking the stuff in drive to cut out a bit of unnecessary sugar..

Apparently this was the Wrong Thing. And part of my ridiculous cheapskatery, indication I do not care about his feelings etc etc. Voices were raised. I pointed out I am not responsible for Aldi's shelf- stacking glitches. He said he'd never wanted to switch in the first place....

He did apologise profusely this morning but it was bloody stupid

MI Smile we did have similar some years back over cooking oil - when DH came back with peanut oil when I have only ever used sunflower. n

I'm afraid for orange juice we only ever buy Tropicana or there are complaints.

Blackduck · 26/04/2014 10:53

Dp knows that if I shop he'll eat what is there. He's actually very easy going in that respect ((but we have to hide ds's nice biscuits or he scoffs them all....)

I am planning a quiet couple of days - laundry and a tidy and getting ds ready for school.

bigTillyMint · 26/04/2014 11:01

We had an OJ watershed moment in Prague when DS actually drank OJ with bits in it, having always refused to toyuch it with a barge-pole!
I only buy Tescos bog-standard at home as a litre goes in a day between my twoShock

motherinferior · 26/04/2014 11:31

Otoh Dd2 v pleased with a selection of packed-lunch-friendly items Grin - all easy to assemble herselfGrin

Blackduck · 26/04/2014 11:35

Now there's an idea MI!

motherinferior · 26/04/2014 11:43

Oh and Stropps, my sister and I are sorting one of those personalised family tree pics you can get on notonthehighstreet for my father's 80th at the end of May (cue family get together of hair-raising horror - my sister's lovely partner has managed to wangle an invitation to a talk in Baltimore Envy )....

hattymattie · 26/04/2014 12:31

DD1 and her boyfriend are making us a curry for lunch. It is 1.30 and they have only just put the rice in. Dh and I meanwhile have had a large aperatif and may be totally squiffy by the time they serve.

CointreauVersial · 26/04/2014 13:12

Poor little Stropdog. Grin And how about a little hamper for the 80yo with everything?

It sounds like you all had a fun evening except MI

We've had a relaxed morning, with no football commitments. I made Blueberry Pancakes and we are shortly off en famille to Kingston. DS has been forced to accompany us, having revealed (on the first day back at school after two whole weeks off, naturally Hmm ) that his school shoes are effectively backless. And he needs shorts - I bought him FIVE pairs last week, and he rejected every last one. Angry So if this summer you see a lunking great teenager on the beach in Cornwall sweltering in jeans, that'll be him.

bigTillyMint · 26/04/2014 13:41

CVGrin DS is quite keen on Primarni shorts - both the jogging bottoms type and the chino's type, which is just as well as they are cheap and he keeps growing like a weed!

Hatty, hope your curry has been served now!

herbaceous · 26/04/2014 13:41

Gibber. I am working on my PGCE presentation and interview, in a state of panic and fog. I haven't had an actual interview for anything for about six years, and that was a quick chat in a restaurant, I was the only candidate, and it was for a job I knew I could do, and had indeed been doing for years.

A few kind people have said 'just be yourself, your personality will shine through' I fear a few jokes won't be enough to disguise the fact that I haven't got the faintest idea what I'm talking about.

hattymattie · 26/04/2014 13:52

Herbs just be yourself and try to be calm and unflappable - easier said than done I know but they are looking for teachers who can manage children now showy off business types. Can BTM not give you a couple of pointers?

Curry was served and excellent - boyfriend lovely and quite chatty - always good with our family. Unfortunately he is going to uni in Holland and DD in the UK so not optimistic for their future longevity.

herbaceous · 26/04/2014 14:00

Ooh yes... Calling BTM. Calling BTM.

HELP ME.
