Best way to lose 2/3 stone?

VanillaHoney · 20/04/2014 18:33

Have tried every diet under the sun... Usually manage to keep the weight of over the summer but it always creeps on over the winter... Only this year have put on more, a lot more actually. Need to motivate myself to lose 2/3 stone by July.

Don't eat meat but happy to eat fish.

Love pasta :-( and don't like "mini style" portions, so guess it is going to be painful in any event.

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I have lost 2 stone so far (another 3 to go) with slimming world, I don't go to classes but used the books from my last attempt with it. works for me as I dont have to count any points or anything, I can eat anything pretty much and portions are as big as I want them, tbh its really just a sensible eating plan but its working well and I don't feel deprived at all. even drink my wine Smile

RunnerBeen · 21/04/2014 08:41

i've lost 2 stone since september on weightwatchers. i did it for about 3 months then just went it alone.

mostly to keep within my points allowance i had to cut down on carbs, for example if i was having a salmon fillet for tea i'd normally have mashed potato and peas, whereas on weightwatchers i'd have it with peas and green beans.

i still ate pasta but i would cut my portion down to half and make the rest up with baby carrots or whatever. instead of sandwiches at lunch i'd either have a salad with no bread or an open sandwich just with one slice.

i also stopped drinking fizzy juice and went excluaively to water and took up running. i find that even if i have a "week off" and eat rubbish i can still lose a pound if i keep up my running routine.

good luck!

Another vote for slimming world having lost a stone in 6 weeks eating the same as my family & not counting calories/weighing portions. A typical day would be

B: cereal or eggs
Snack: banana & apple
L: big salad with fish (salmon, sardines etc) & hard boiled egg, chunky soup or jacket potato & beans
Snack: satsuma & some grapes
D: spag Bol with side salad, chicken & veg curry & rice, chilli & rice, paella, prawn stir-fry with noodles followed by yogurt or fruit

Basically normal food but increased levels of veg (eg I cook normal spag Bol but have a salad on the side) or bacon & eggs for breakfast now includes mushrooms & tomato & skin off the bacon plus snacking on lots more fruit & upping water intake has helped (plus my skin is so much better Grin)

I am also on slimming world and the weight is coming off. You can have as much pasta as you want. You can still eat chocolate and stuff but you have to use syns for it - there's vast amounts of food which you can have that are free. For example breakfast this morning is bacon, fried eggs, beans and toast. All free. It's all about the way you cook stuff. I'd go along to a meeting and see what you think .

Having a go on the low carb... If I can not stick to it may try SW but don't fancy joining meetings or paying for online to be honest so will try low carb first.

Shopping for eggs & fish now.

If diets worked then we would never need to go on another one. They don't. You lose money though through buying special foods or going to diet clubs and ten years or twenty years from now you find yourself still there, trying the latest diet.

I stopped ten years ago and have maintained my weight. I eat when I am truly hungry and stop when I am satisfied. Body led eating.

Millyblods · 21/04/2014 11:30

And I eat anything I want. Smile

VanillaHoney · 21/04/2014 11:36

If I ate anything I wanted I would be the size of a house.

It is likely that I will be in the same position next year, but if I can enjoy summer feeling good about myself than that is a pretty good start. Think I may just have to settle for short term at the moment...

You wouldn't you know. Its about relearning to listen to your body and eat like a naturally slim person. When I say I eat anything I want I mean that I don't diet. I have buy all the foods I love and eat them when im truly hungry and stop as soon as I am satisfied. I enjoy my food. If I were to try low carb or any other diet now then I would most certainly end up bingeing by the end of the week and then back to square one. I got off the diet wagon.

Good luck to you though.

A low carb diet does not suit someone who doesn't eat meat, it's important to tailor your diet to your eating preferences.

Instead I would swap all refined carbs like pasta for complex carbs - wholewheat or buckwheat pasta, quinoa etc, cut your portions and cut out as much sugar as you can.

I maintain my weight by eating a balance of protein and complex carbs, lots of fruit and vegetables, little sugar. I don't really diet myself but my mum has had great success on the 5:2 diet, despite my scepticism, and my sister has had great success doing Weightwatchers.

Bottom line is if you eat less and exercise more you will lose weight whatever plan you follow.

Twinklestein · 21/04/2014 14:21

However - if you want to keep it off, you need to change your eating habits for good.

Kundry · 21/04/2014 17:04

Low carb together with logging everything (absolutely everything!) on myfitnesspal for a calorie count.

Being obsessional - there's a big study in the US of people who've lost weight and kept it off for years, which generally people don't manage to do.

The successful people all weighed themselves everyday, treated every day the same ie no treats at weekends, did regular exercise and most importantly viewed it as a lifestyle change not a diet.

Millyblods · 21/04/2014 17:26

When did the natural and necessary need to eat food become so complicated I wonder. It's amazing that that which enables us to survive ( food) seems to have become the enemy instead of the life giving
sustenance that it is.

BecauseImWoeufIt · 21/04/2014 17:47

Because, Milly, we no longer eat food just to survive. We eat it for pleasure. Which means that we often consume way much more than we need.

BecauseImWoeufIt · 21/04/2014 17:48

Twinklestein - you can easily eat and enjoy low carb if you don't eat meat. And the OP has said that she eats fish, so not really a problem there.

Wishiwashelenmirren · 21/04/2014 18:07

Yay! 5th may!

thanks BIWI!
May have to start this week though, then hitch over come the 5th, have sons 21st event and I need to fit my fat backside into naice dress.

Pooremployer · 21/04/2014 18:12

For those with experience in low carbs, what is good to eat for breakfast and lunch at work? I cannot eat breakfast first thing. I eat usually about 10 am.

Itsfab · 21/04/2014 18:14

I lost a stone is on Pig 2 Twig, one stone on Diet Chef and one on 5:2. Currently stuck with 1.5 stones to go. One stone was lost twice.

Millyblods · 21/04/2014 18:19

Because food should be about pleasure. No one forces us to eat when we are not hungry. No one puts food into our mouths. Diets are a big part of why our eating is disordered. It's not another diet that people need. How many diets does someone need to go on before they realise that they won't solve the overeating.

Twinklestein · 21/04/2014 18:20

Because She'd have to eat an awful lot of fish and she may not want to...

The fact is you can lose weight either on a low carb diet or a low protein high complex carb diet... different diets suit different bodies and eating preferences...

Wishiwashelenmirren · 21/04/2014 18:20

Brekkie for me will be egg in any format, so you could have cold boiled egg some ideas Here and Here
Think outside the box to some extent; breakfast doesn't have to be traditional, you could have yoghurt and nuts, with some blueberry mixed in.
