That's it really - got a big party to go to and would like to wear a sleeveless dress for once. I'm skinny-flabby - look thin in clothes but have a paunch, a saggy bum and really out of proportion bingo wings. (Nice!)

Have read lots about Tracy Anderson - should I do with or without weights, or both? Anything else? Am hopeless at push-ups, should I persevere?

Good luck, the key is consistency whatever method you choose.

Mepmep · 22/04/2014 18:31

Op, you can just do some boxing classes / workouts and get the same results in half the time you would by just using weights etc.

Most gyms have some kind of a boxing workout these days but check out a workout aimed at boxers - not nearly as scary as it sounds. Boxing workouts are much higher intensity and are designed to build muscle and strength and are usually much shorter in duration. There will be some stuff on YouTube.

Mepmep · 22/04/2014 18:33

Oh I just noticed your last post! Yep. Boxing. Or some kind of combat fitness or martial art. One workout usually targets abs, back, arms everything. Smile

Springing · 25/04/2014 08:41

Are there any good boxing workout dvds? Looked on Amazon but didn't come up with much. No classes near me!

Do you have any Les Mills classes / gyms that do them? Body Combat & Body Pump would have you & your arms looking great in no time Smile

Northumberlandlass · 26/04/2014 12:46

Oh do you mean no classes at all near you?

pinkflaming0 · 27/04/2014 16:55

Is there a Tracy Anderson DVD that anyone would recommend for toning arms?

Thx

coffeeinbed · 27/04/2014 18:12

Tracy Anderson's Mat workout.

mac12 · 27/04/2014 22:45

Second Tracy Anderson's Mat workout - do the with and the without weights sections (probably about 15 minutes in total and for the weights you can just use little water bottles, nothing heavy). It really kills but the results can be seen quickly. I'm about to start doing it again ready for summer - why oh why did i stop??

Coumarin · 28/04/2014 02:51

When you say you can see results quickly, how quick are we talking?

I know it'll depend in the starting point but I get disheartened fast when you can't see results so a time scale, even a rough one, might keep me motivated.

coffeeinbed · 28/04/2014 09:48

Two weeks and you will start noticing.
But you must do the exercise at least 5 days a week.

You will bet better results if you add some cardio.

Twinklestein · 28/04/2014 10:07

Resistance bands and light weights - don't use weights of more than 500g or you will end up with those masculine, veiny gym arms.

I think 6 weeks is optimistic, why not try a more achievable goal?

Suzannewithaplan · 28/04/2014 10:25

Really??
Tiny weights = tiny results!

But I agree that six weeks is over optimistic, a perfect body is a longterm project requiring dedication and commitment on all fronts

Coumarin · 28/04/2014 12:25

Thanks Coffee I'm determined to stick with it this time. Have just ordered the TA one.

McPie · 28/04/2014 12:45

Unless you have a very serious testosterone imbalance or are taking steroids then you will never get those masculine, veiny gym arms. It is a major misconception that females have the natural ability to build muscles in the way a man can.
I have been doing dumbbell skull crushers, as part of my strength training, working my way from 10kg up to my current 22kg and I don't have massive arms but they damn well are a hell of a lot more toned than when I started last October!

Northumberlandlass · 28/04/2014 13:03

Agree with McPie - I squat 25kg, Chest & Biceps 10kg, back 15kg in Body Pump, loads of reps & differing types of lifts.
I am toned (well getting there)

You won't end up looking masculine or veiny, if you push yourself everytime it works!

At the end of each track, if I have enough strength to do 2 more reps - I don't have enough weight on & go heavier next time.

Can you tell I LOVE lifting weights Smile

ninahaska · 28/04/2014 13:10

It depends on that what effect you want to have. If you want to look fit and muscle (burn fat and look nice) you have to do long fitness workouts + some bodybuilding workout on your arms. Do not care, you will not have Arnold Shcwarzenegger arms :D or anything like that. First bodybuilding training, many reps (16-20) in series and long fitness training, for example with Mel b (easy to find on youtube). Remember about diet, not much carbohydrates and and not much fat on evening time. You can also use some cosmetics for this. Do not know if I have something like that in my online store.

coffeehouse · 28/04/2014 16:00

Ive been working on my arms for a while, this is my experience-
With tracey anderson method the size of your arms will decrease and will become slender. Initially I went from 13" to 10" using her method combined with general weightloss through diet and exercise. The tightening begins fairly quickly if I remember.

But now my personal preference is fairly heavy weights and many sets of press ups, my upper arm circumference is slightly bigger though around 11" , but they are solid and getting good definition plus much stronger shoulders too which I like.
You wont build huge muscles unless you start eating for body building, but you will have strength and definition.
I guess its down to the look your after - best of luck, T A is a great start.

Nibblyboy · 28/04/2014 16:01

I agree Body pump is aces for arms.

Suzannewithaplan · 28/04/2014 17:30

tbh very few men in the gym manage to get that 'veiny muscular' look so I dont think us gals need to worry :o

Twinklestein · 28/04/2014 17:36

Really??

No, you don't need heavy weights to build muscle and burn fat, and it's a myth that heavier weights yield better results on women. They bulk up muscles in the short term which pleases people looking for fast results, but if you do not continue at that level of training long term the muscles will quickly lose their tone. Heavier weights can also create the 'masculine veiny arm' look I was talking about such as you may have seen on Madonna, Courtney Cox...

Twinklestein · 28/04/2014 17:42

This is not true. For women, over-exercising and using weights that are too heavy can lead them to develop that veiny, male arm look, you may have seen on female celebrities. It's possible to sculpt your arms perfectly without leading to that particular look if you have a very good and experienced personal trainer. I am fully aware that women don't build muscle as easily as men...

Suzannewithaplan · 28/04/2014 17:43

Twinkle, you are talking out of your hat, what I dont know about weight training aint worth knowing.

But whatever, no skin off my nose, carry on with the baseless 'bro science'

Twinklestein · 28/04/2014 17:49

And you're not confident enough to accept an alternative perspective without grandstanding like a 5 year old?

pinkflaming0 · 28/04/2014 21:36

It's tricky when you get contradictory advice.

I don't have the time to go to the gym at the moment so I'll try TA.

My arms are currently 9.5 inches at narrowest part of upper arm so not looking to slim but to tone up some more (just completed 30 day shred which has helped). Would like more definition on the backs of my arms - that nice tricep groove.
