Cleanser for make up brushes?

imustbepatient · 20/04/2014 13:50

Following all the recommendations from this thread I now have (and love) the Real Techniques stippling brush, but my usual half arsed way of cleaning brushes (i.e. swirl with some hand soap and water in my cupped hand) just isn't cutting it with this brush.

What do other people use to clean their brushes?

Try Dr Bronner's 18 in 1 liquid soap. You can find it in TK Max in various scents. I use the tea tree one. It's very runny but v.concentrated and cleans my RT brushes well.

If you've been using your brush for creams/liquids I sometimes use an oily makeup remover or a drop of olive oil first as it breaks down foundation more effectively. Swirl the brush in the oil, wipe off on kitchen roll then wash as normal.

I have that brush, I love it!
I swirl but also work some soap through the bristles and rinse then reshape and leave to dry. Have been using up some dr bronner liquid soap on it which is quite concentrated

X post!!!
But then I use that soap for everything Grin

twoboots · 20/04/2014 14:03

shampoo. i usually have odds and end of various bottles left in the house.

RonaldMcDonald · 20/04/2014 14:32

shampoo - i use kids but only because I still have them

TheGruffalo2 · 20/04/2014 14:32

I use organic baby shampoo.

HowAboutNo · 20/04/2014 14:54

I have the real technique brushes and wipe them on a make up wipe everyday then use shampoo every so often.

I watched the lady on the Clinique counter squirt alcohol hand gel on her brushes and then wipe it off onto tissue, but I don't know how good that is!

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 20/04/2014 14:58

I use the MAC brush cleaner for spot cleans every few uses and then I 'wet' clean them probably once a month. I use a gentle gel cleanser, at the moment it's the Eucerin gel face wash (don't like it for my face but it serve perfectly well for brushes). Baby shampoo is also good.

This is a quick tutorial from the real techniques site on how to clean your brushes:

I use washing up liquid. Is that not right?

aylesburyduck · 20/04/2014 16:38

Don't pay attention to the clinique method (or any other counter for that matter) of using alcohol gel. It's just a quick in counter clean.

I know clinique gets a bashing in general, but on my counter brushes were properly cleaned every day. The alcohol gel just kills bacteria rather than cleans.

Dirty brushes would not have gone down well with my -evil witch of an- Area Manager

HowAboutNo · 20/04/2014 17:10

aylesbury I did think it was strange, but it made sense also so I didn't question it!

Blithereens · 20/04/2014 17:15

Sulfate-free shampoo.

Onsera3 · 20/04/2014 17:18

I shampoo and condition them and then dry flat on a towel. I find the conditioner means the product distributes better rather than staying behind on brush fibres.

Mitchell2 · 20/04/2014 22:49

I have had trouble cleaning that brush and some of my it her real techniques one and have found the japonesque goats milk solid one great. I much prefer to using a liquid type (like the mac) and it's less faff than a soap.

Mitchell2 · 20/04/2014 22:50

It her ? Other!

lurkingaround · 20/04/2014 23:01

Shampoo, when I do clean them. Satisfying job tho.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/04/2014 23:09

I remember years ago reading about surgical spirit to clean brushes - but it makes sponge applicators go all floppy.

I use baby shampoo then stand upright to dry.

DevonCiderPunk · 20/04/2014 23:22

at a Bare Minerals counter recently the brush smelled beautifully of almond, and the advisor explained that they clean the brushes with an oil-based cleaner. Intrigued by that.. I use shampoo, too.

ballseditup · 21/04/2014 00:36

Bobbi brown!

The spray - I use more regularly. Spray onto folded up kitchen Roll and wipe and swirl brushes I use for powder only

The cleanser - put some into the sink or bowl with warm water and swirl. Don't let the join between the brush and handle get wet otherwise it will ruin the glue and your brush won't last long

ballseditup · 21/04/2014 00:37

Oh and dry flat.

Do not dry upright - the water will run into the handle and the glue and will ruin your brush. Don't dry facing down as you will ruin the brush

bluesbaby · 21/04/2014 01:00

johnsons baby shampoo. gentle and doesn't strip any coatings on the bristles.

imustbepatient · 21/04/2014 09:48

Thanks so much everyone, great tips and so handy to know I can use my shampoo too. I had been drying them upright too, won't be doing that again!

Interesting about not getting the glue part wet; I hadn't thought of that. Maybe it will stop my new BM brushes shedding so much?
