what shoes to wear in the summer with plantar fasciitis

StackALee · 17/04/2014 16:12

I have plantar fasciitis in one foot and have to wear insteps so this means that I can no longer spend all summer in flats. :(
I don't do heels.
I don't want to wear crocs.

What shoes would you wear with the following (would need to put the instep in them) that aren't flats, high heels or flip flops?

brogues?

Fit flop shoes - they have been amazing for my feet

Orla kiely for clarks sandals? - only about a one inch heel.

I had this last summer and found fitflops helped. I then moved onto Nike Free, but any barefoot trainer seems to be doing the job (without the insoles).

I was putting the insoles into my normal shoes, but I believe now that the reason I got plantar fasciitis in the first place was because of the shoes - hard, probably ill-fitting.

It was believed that the foot needed extra cushioning with pf, now there is a school of thought that says barefoot shoes are better, and they certainly have been for me.

Fruityflapjack · 17/04/2014 16:29

I had this terribly last year, just in time for summer Hmm
Ballet pumps and flip flops were murderous.

I wore Birkenstocks all summer. They were fabby teamed with linen trousers.

gosh - do people really pay this much for such ugly shoes!

OP you have my sympathies... I have suffered. Last year was my worst and I can recommend the Birkenstocks.

I was surprised I got plantar as I never wear heels, always sensible shoes.

Bloody painful!

polyhymnia · 17/04/2014 17:28

Have had a couple of bouts of PF and definitely recommend Fitflops.

Slackgardener · 17/04/2014 18:42

I wear Birkinstocks all the time around the house and casually as much as possible. Canvas plimsolls like spring court have good support and I wear brogues and ankle boots with insoles.

Chocolateteabag · 17/04/2014 18:45

Could you manage a pair of Gabor ballet style shoes like these they are£75 but a lot more cushioned

Cocolepew · 17/04/2014 18:51

The only thing that helped me was Birkinstocks, I wear Madrids.

itsbetterthanabox · 17/04/2014 19:30

I just wear light plimsolls like converse or vans and put my inner soles in them. Anything else even if it's shaped will support you foot in a slightly different way and it hurts!

PollyWhittaker · 17/04/2014 20:00

NotinGuatamala - we seem to have opposite feet. I got pf when wearing mostly barefoot shoes and it only cleared up when I started wearing orthopaedic inserts in more rigid shoes.

My DD is only 7 but she has just been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis too. She has been wearing mostly barefoot shoes for the past few years.

paulapantsdown · 17/04/2014 20:02

I had PF in both feet for about a year and the only thing that I could wear were fitflops. I really do believe that the cushioning actually helped heal it aswell.

Sl1nkyMalinki · 17/04/2014 20:35

Fitflops work for me. In fact they work so well that I have fitflop boots for winter too!

I feel like such a frump but at least I can walk without pain. I need extra padding as my feet are so flat and skinny, virtually no fat pads at all. I find that if I wear fit flops the majority of the time, my feet are pain free enough to sneak some heels in for a night out!

Morgan · 17/04/2014 20:55

I have PF too and was wondering what to do - looks like dome fit flops are in order . My feet are quite wide - are they ok for wide feet ? Need casual pair and ideally some for work.

bettabella · 17/04/2014 21:27

Fitflops are good, also I found Merrells quite supportive too, they do a nice ballet pump style (rather than the trainer style) which I lived in last summer and have bought a new pair this year. Also like 'El naTuralista' (sp?) from Shoon. Recommend Asics trainers too for their support.

doglover · 17/04/2014 21:37

Fit Flops all the time here!

SauvignonBlanche · 17/04/2014 21:41

Like the idea of FitFlops but don't like the price! Shock

Bluebell79 · 17/04/2014 22:52

I suffered the last couple of years and the fit flop boots and flip flop style really helped, I don't wear heels so not sure why I got it, do find ballet pumps and flat sandals didn't help, seem to be managing with converses now and I'm wondering what will happen when summer comes and it's sandal weather will the pf come back.

Sl1nkyMalinki · 18/04/2014 00:29

It was actually going barefoot and wearing ballet pumps that caused my PF, a small heel is beneficial as is lots of padding and stretching out my calf muscles and Achilles every day.

I've also just discovered fitflops in our local Factory Shop. Plus it's always worth shopping around online.

As for width, I have skinny feet and I find most fitflop styles to cater for wider feet. I have to stick to certain styles to know my feet won't be swimming in them!

kazzawazzawoo · 18/04/2014 14:42

Watching with interest- I have PF too, can't wear flats anymore, but can't walk in heels. Any suggestions for work shoes that I can wear with a skirt, pref black t

kazzawazzawoo · 18/04/2014 14:43

Forgot to say, when not at work I wear Birkenstocks all the time and my feet don't hurt.

TickleMyTitsTillFriday · 18/04/2014 14:54

I have this and am actually much more comfortable in heels, i go for wedges, have just bought these and I am looking forward to wearing them to death!

I am prone to pf and also have problems with tight achilles. I can't do completely flat shoes anymore despite spending a life time in them. I need at least a 1.5inch heel, no padding and my inserts. Summer is a nightmare.
I need ideas too.
