Whats the verdict on baby bikinis??

Hi everyone.
MIL is taking my 20 mo DD swimming and has bought her a baby bikini. (this one if it makes any difference)

She looks cute and I am grateful that she thought of DD but my mum says that they're frowned upon for young ones and I'll be judged at the pool! Am I out of touch? Are they so bad? Should I buy her another one instead?

it looks fine to me as its a tankini and doesnt pretend to be a wee strappy bikini with triangle cups.

ilovepowerhoop · 10/04/2014 15:34

remember a swim nappy too

PuggyMum · 10/04/2014 15:35

I have a not dissimilar one for my dd. she's 6 months and we've just got back from holiday.

I didn't realise there was an issue with bikinis (unless it's only got little triangles for the top and a thong!).

We found the bikini easier for quickly whipping the bottoms and swim nappy off so she wasn't all wet for ages after getting out of the pool.

She was naked on the sunbed a couple of times while we re applied cream etc.

Annietheacrobat · 10/04/2014 15:37

Our daughter wears a 2 piece and we find it much easier. She's quite long in the body too and so it stops the bottoms from disappearing into her errrrr bottom.

AdorabeezleWinterpop · 10/04/2014 15:37

I wouldn't have bought one for DD when she was a baby and I still wouldn't now that she's 4. Not entirely sure why but I don't like the idea. I usually get her the ones that are like shorts and T-shirts with UV protection as they do for holidays, paddling pools and water-fights but now she's older she has a 'sporty' one-piece. Not sure a bikini is practical for swimming and splashing about.

I wouldn't judge someone else for getting one for their DD though.

chocchips · 10/04/2014 15:38

Have lots of swim nappies!

They look more convenient for changing and does look super cute but my mum was horrified and I didn't know if I was making some massive baby fashion faux pas that I didn't realise! Thanks guys :)

Nothing wrong with it, I would let my dd wear it & I'm fussy! Can't stand seeing little girls in inappropriate clothing.

Did your mum see it? Maybe she thought it was going to be like a adults bikini.

frankietwospots · 10/04/2014 15:39

I saw the title of your thread and thought 'Nooo!' but a tankini isn't that bad. I presume it's a warm pool? I bought one of those neoprene wetsuits for my DS when we were doing swimming classes because he would practically turn blue, even though it was supposed to be a warm pool.

murphys · 10/04/2014 15:40

I wouldn't but only for the purposes of being on the beach and she getting sunburnt on her body. I think a swim nappy and the top would be perfectly fine.

chocchips · 10/04/2014 15:53

Thanks everyone, it will stay :)

Its not for the beach or anything just for the local pool (which has its own warm toddler pool bit). Last year she had shorts and T-shirt on the beach and I intend to do the same this year.

Thanks for your input

Very cute! So much easier for little girls to use the loo also.

WhoNickedMyName · 10/04/2014 17:54

I don't mind tankinis for little girls, thru definitely make going to the toilet easier. I can't stand those triangle bikinis for kids though, I don't know why anyone buys them.

Ash74 · 25/04/2014 15:43

I prefer a bit more cover on the little one but agree with Marylou2 so much easier for a quick swim nappie change. I love love love www.heidiklein.com/printed-kaftan-with-green-tassles - a super cute kaftans! You could always go for a rash vest which you can whip on and off if she is wearing a bikini.

dexter73 · 25/04/2014 16:40

Never in a million years would I pay £59 for a kaftan for a child!!

Meglet · 25/04/2014 16:44

I wouldn't pay 59 for a kaftan for me! (work / winter clothes, yes. Not for a waft on the beach 3 days a year)

UriGeller · 25/04/2014 16:51

Its advertised as a tankini not a bikini but the top does look a bit cropped. Depends how it fits.

I'm the sort that prefer my dcs all to be flinging themselves around buck naked on holiday and I sometimes think little cossies and tankinis look a bit daft on a baby or toddler.

UriGeller · 25/04/2014 16:52

Oh my god its a scarf with a hole in the middle! £59??!

BuzzardBird · 25/04/2014 16:55

Especially when Primark do lovely kaftans for about £3! Shock

BuzzardBird · 25/04/2014 16:56

...and to be fair, that is a poncho, not a kaftan.

Treaclepot · 25/04/2014 16:57

the OPs articulate, coherent and polite arguement has really made me re-think my position on this matter.

Treaclepot · 25/04/2014 16:58

Wrong thread!!!!

ColdTeaAgain · 25/04/2014 17:02

Not keen on them, just don't like the concept of putting babies in more "grown up" outfits, but that particular one isn't bad as far as baby bikinis go. As it was a gift I'd prob use it a few times and then get a swimsuit.

BuzzardBird · 25/04/2014 17:09

Oh Treacle, what thread?

shoppingbagsundereyes · 25/04/2014 17:10

Bikinis are bad for babies IMO. My dd is nearly 6 and still not allowed one. Also a proper swimming costume is more comfortable for the pool. For holidays I always get the sunsuits with sleeves in so we don't need to worry about shoulders etc burning.

cowsarescary · 25/04/2014 17:26

Id just use the bottoms, frankly.
