If you were a 90's indie kid and you're now approaching 40 what do you wear?

I would love to still be wearing docs, leggings and baggy lumberjack shirts, with maybe a mini skirt for clubbing.

Sadly I am 2 stone heavier, 20 years older, haven't been clubbing for 5 years and would look a complete sight!

Can you still have an alternative style as you get older? If you do, what sort of things do you wear and where do you shop?

In my early forties and still doing a rock chick / indie kid look - at least out of work!

Biker jackets (have several), black skinny jeans, short skirts, shorts and tights. I think some of my choices are a bit toned down - tights tend to be thicker and black rather than multi coloured. Still do DMs - but without the bright laces.

For going out. I might do Hell Bunny dresses.

Also, Love my shoes. I see your Iron Fist and give you TUK.

50shades I LOVE the cat ones and the puffy heart ones! Seriously tempted!

Off the original topic, but have you heard that BBC2 is having a Britpop week next week? Loads of shows celebrating 20 years of Britpop (arbitrary date choice???!). I'm excited Smile

indieakka · 02/04/2014 20:49

Radio 2, not BBC 2!

Ooh I have just rediscovered the Pale Saints, Curve, Lush and the Levellers this week Grin

Sartorially speaking I like tube maxi dresses as a foundation that I layer up depending on how I feel. I like Fly Mes boots, fake converse, Conkers and Birkenstocks. Still like Nomads and Gringo ( I was a bit indie and a bit of a Crusty hybrid) as well as cropped jumpers and Bretons.

I still have a messy pixie and am wedded to my eyeliner and dark lipsticks. I think you can wear a lot of black but use jewellery and shoes for the quirk factor.

Cos always strikes me as the Indie woman having to smarten up for work - but who is still edgy.

Flangeofmingetown · 02/04/2014 23:55

Oh and I have bought some Boden stuff but mainly, er, black. They have a black boat neck t-shirt that is a good basic. You do have to wade through acres of frumpdom to find the good stuff. Their Bretons are good this year too.

I loved being an indie kid but am 38 now!
I wear:
Skinny jeans, rolled boy fit jeans and chinos, cigarette pants
Pencil skirts for work
Striped tops, plain vests, blouses and fitted shirts
skinny fit cashmere and merino
leather biker jacket, parka and trench
Brogues, heeled ankle boots, converse, birkenstocks, leopard print shoes and boots

I'm 43 and on maternity leave!

Daywear is skinnies, vest tops, grandad cardigan or baggy jumper as still BF.

I'm lucky my work is connected to the music industry so can rock up in skinnies, t-shirt and blazer with converse or boots.

Not worn combats for years, as not sure they'd be such a good look with the extra two stone I've found in the last 20 years!

I avoid Next. Wear Gap, H&M and a few investment pieces - decent trench coat and loafers.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/04/2014 08:01

The only thing I've ditched is the Docs (which of course I sometimes regret) but I wear leggings every day.

As tights in winter tucked into boots so noone knows their leggings and under tunics in the summer.

I also always wear wrap dresses or tunics - I buy second hand Boden/phase eight/white company/Laura ashley on EBay or in sales. The dark florals are really no different to my late 80's morrissey stage

The biggest change is the hair, I used to use dark colours or bright red, now I'm highlighted blonde

FrankCarsonsDressingRoom · 03/04/2014 08:56

I still wear docs. Purple ones.

And flares, yep, flares all the way

And suede and leaher blazers

And...the odd flowery skirt. ....

I was more of a rock kid than an indie kid and have gone back to that a bit recently after spending my thirties in boden/fat face mumsyish 'style'.

Usually wear black skinnies/slim jeans, like zipper details or biker style. Black or print loose t-shirt, I like lace details, this sort of thing, with a drapey black cardi. I find New Look quite good if I'm picky, they often have slightly 'alternative' styled things.

I like the style of Freja Beha off-duty.

MinesaBottle · 03/04/2014 20:47

I haven't really changed my style either except I now wear skinny jeans rather than baggy. Leggings (including shiny or leather ones), baggy t shirts, jumpers, the odd shift dress. I am a couple of sizes larger than I was in the early 90s - wish I was still a skinny thing! There were so many baggy clothes then that I never really wore much that was figure-flattering. Except the leggings I guess.
