If you were a 90's indie kid and you're now approaching 40 what do you wear?

I would love to still be wearing docs, leggings and baggy lumberjack shirts, with maybe a mini skirt for clubbing.

Sadly I am 2 stone heavier, 20 years older, haven't been clubbing for 5 years and would look a complete sight!

Can you still have an alternative style as you get older? If you do, what sort of things do you wear and where do you shop?

Love it Indie! If my dad can still wear his 60's ties I can still wear my DMs!

I've spent a rather obscene amount of money on Joe Brown website today, convincing myself that I'll send back what I don't want.

My next challenge is to find something to wear for work that I don't hate!

Skinny trousers or a tube skirt. Loose tops, and layers. No patterns except stripes. Scarves. Ballet flats, heels or boots.

A million miles away from the tie dye, DMs, tartan pinafores and dungarees of my youth. I do go for the slightly rock-chick look of an evening - dark eye make up, black, leather etc. But mostly I now just look very safe and conservative.

FunkyBoldRibena · 20/03/2014 18:52

I was the only manager at the national management conferences with a pierced tongue [during my 30s and early 40s]. Fact.

I would just go with drainpipes and black boots, a plain white shirt [not blouse] and a funky striped [horizontal, natch] jumper under suit if it was chilly out. And of course a long black almost cloak like coat for the winter. Funky suit jacket all other times.

Now, it's alot easier even though at 46 it is hard to keep up but stripey tops, boots [I teach horticulture so can get away with any style of boots I fancy], jeans and I usually wear those with comfy cardis, or a suede jacket [too large and baggy, natch], a stripey scarf and various hats during the winter. My colours are black and white, sometimes I'll pop a colourful vintage dress over the jeans with boots if it's sunny and just try not to get too muddy.

Every now and then I'll sport a band tshirt - I have a rare Morrisey one, some Chameleons ones, Moby 'Everything is Wrong' and various others; all given to me by friends who worked in the music industry so are mostly promos...only recognisable by other indie kids of the day...I have two of those Radiohead ones where they did the invite only gigs just before they released The Bends and yes, I was there with 30 others watching from 3 ft away. Rare as hens teeth and only us oldies know about it.

I've always been quite happy being old. I love it.

I'm older at 44, but still a bit of an indie girl at heart.

I tend to wear:
'mini' skirts (ie several inches above the knee) with opaques and ankle boots

skinnies and Converse or ankle boots

short jumper dresses and ankle boots

biker jackets or denim jackets for casual / fabric bikers or blazers for smarter

sort of thing

this sort of thing

This sort of thing but with slightly longer skirt and nicer boots

This sort of thing with that length or mini-ish

tethersend · 20/03/2014 20:24

60s and 70s vintage clothes now.

Although I occasionally let my hair flop in my face and do some quiet shoegazing Grin

colleysmill · 20/03/2014 21:05

I toyed with the idea of getting some new doc boots recently until I saw the price.

My face was like this Shock when I clocked the price tag. I got mine for 40 quid in 1993!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/03/2014 21:07

Shoegazing...nostalgic face. :) Sarah bands anyone?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/03/2014 17:56

Nooooo - how did I kill the thread? Come back!

squizita · 21/03/2014 18:08

Love these!

indieakka · 21/03/2014 18:44

I meant to mention in my post that I also occasionally wear Ali Baba pants - admittedly they aren't so much indie / grunge inspired, but they are a quite good alternative alternative to jeans. Never sure what the best shoes to go with them are though.....

And I still keep an eye out in every charity shop I go in to for Adidas flight bags and Fred Perry polo shirts and V-Neck jumpers Smile Old habits die hard!!

ScandinavianPrincess · 21/03/2014 18:49

THis is me!
I think I dress sort of the same as I did then. Frocks, boots, t shirt, baseball boots etc.
You could wear the lumberjack shirts over jeans maybe?
I don't have much advice but have loved this thread. It stirs up memories of seeing Chapterhouse, Ride, Revolver, Blur, Primal Scream and a whole host of obscure indie bands. Ee, them were the days.

Dappydongle · 21/03/2014 18:53

Fancy dms and dresses, cardies.

LiberalLibertine · 21/03/2014 19:12

indie sandals or converse with the trousers surely? :)

And hell yes to Fred Perry shirts, my dp wears then all the time, I love them

wonderpants · 21/03/2014 19:29

Loving this thread! Would love ideas of where to shop that would fit/ suit a very norky/ belly shaped size 16/18!

NotJustACigar · 21/03/2014 19:31

How about ModCloth? I love their stuff www.modcloth.com/style-gallery

JackiePaper · 21/03/2014 19:37

Where are you all buying your flared jeans from? Have been trying to get some for ages and having no luck!

LiberalLibertine · 21/03/2014 19:54

notjust I love that look on other people, can't pull out off myself though :(

frumpet · 21/03/2014 20:45

Mum jeans and a mainly clean top of a t-shirt variety . What i would like to wear is anything else , but have turned into a total frump due to excess weight and depression . Do have some lovely clothes in the wardrobe for when i finally give a damn though Smile

QueenofLouisiana · 21/03/2014 20:51

I wear these DMs. I love that I can wear DMs while looking so respectable (I am a primary school teacher). I like my biker jackets, low heel boots, skinny jeans, but also dresses and cardies.

If you were a 90's indie kid and you're now approaching 40 what do you wear?
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/03/2014 21:03

I like those, Queen. I've got cone heeled DMs but they look a bit dated and frumpy now.

TittyNotSusan · 21/03/2014 22:30

Ooh lots more ideas! I love those shoes Queen. Are they current stock? I can't find them.

I've been trying to find some shoes for work today that wouldn't scare my boss, but that would fit with my "no real shoes" policy.

I love these

Or these

They are a bit outside my budget for work shoes though.

OP posts:
Twunk · 21/03/2014 22:35

I still wear DMs but now they are zipped knee-highs.

I wear leggings and desigual dresses or something from King Louis (is this just a Dutch thing? Not sure) or random crap I buy.

I don't have to go to an office though.

shoegazing · 21/03/2014 22:56

If I needed some non real shoes for work, I'd definitely be wanting that first pair of Art shoes, and I'd want them in brown and red!

bouquetofpencils · 21/03/2014 23:31

40 this year. Use to drive my folks mad wearing clumpy boots with pretty dresses.
Today I wore black biker boots, black leggings, blue white and black floral dress and later slung a grey long jumper over dress.
In hindsight.... Not that different!
I wear jeans a lot, both skinny and boot cut depending on top. Tops are either round neck sweaters with boot cuts or looser blouses with skinnies. I wear lots of fit and flare dresses with black opaque tights and knee length boots in winter, and dreses over cropped jeggings with sandals/ post in summer.
I still love a charity shop find and have a mild eBay addiction.

rockpink · 22/03/2014 00:05

I like all of these styles though I was not into the music. It's just the whole dress style that appeals to me!
