White dress for a wedding

Sorry another "help me dress as a wedding guest" thread, but it am finding this one a bit challenging.

I had a thread in AIBU, here but thought I need some specialist S&B advice.

The dress code For women is white evening dress, which is hideous as I don't suit white. My budget would ideally be £200 as I will never wear it again, but want something nice, so may have to go higher and sell it afterwards. I am a size 10/12 and 5ft 3, so can't have anything too wide.

I have trawled my usual sites, but can't seem to find anything, so any help would be appreciated.

This is over budget but a nice shape I think. With big Zara colourful necklace you could avoid washed out feeling?

if I was never going to wear something again my budget would be 20 not 200!! And nothing would induce me to wear white as I look like a ghost in it. Why don't you bend the rules a bit and go for ivory or cream or even monochrome - at last way you'd tone in with the dinner suits.

It really depends.

If it's a white tie do I think that means long formal dresses. Black tie just formal evening dress.

I think they mean long. The bride was talking ages ago that she wanted a glamorous evening party with everyone in long dresses.

It is a late afternoon wedding and evening reception.

So everyone in long white dresses? Isn't that the absolute opposite of what you should wear to a wedding.

Could you check with other guests / bride first before you spend your money? There are hardly any long white evening dresses - seems such a narrow dress code. Everyone will be in the same thing. Seems nuts to me.

several of the charity shops in my town have wedding dresses for sale. Doesn't have to be the full meringue, can be just a white/ivory dress with a bit of sparkle in places.

Are you sure the bride doesn't mean a 'white tie' dress code? That just means the most formal level of dress - long evening dresses for women - rather than wearing white specifically.

Seems bonkers to tell your guests what colour they are allowed to wear.

I think I need to ask the bride and then confer with a few of the women going.

I can only think they are envisaging some sort of Elton John Black and White Ball type scenario.

If it does turn out to be 'wear white' rather than 'white tie' then I would just buy whatever the cheapest Monsoon wedding dress is.

For what it's worth, if I got that invite I would either decline or ignore the white rule. I'm overweight and there is no way I would wear white

If I were you, I'd pick a nice sewing pattern, get some silver-grey or ivory silk (if you prefer either of those colours to white), and pay a seamstress to make it up for you. If you ask her to use silk thread then you'll be able to dye the dress to a colour you prefer after the wedding. That should cost less than £200 and mean that you'll have something that fits perfectly, is exactly to your taste, and can be worn again.

You can usually find local seamstresses through Gumtree, Yell.com, etc. I get my patterns from www.sewessential.co.uk and my fabric from ebay, but I'm sure there are many other places!

I'm starting to get dress envy

Tethersend, I like the second one very much.

I am going to call the bride, accept the invitation, say how excited we are etc and ask to just check the dress code with her. Eg. How white, how long.

Think I will get DD this here then I can dye it when it becomes irredeemably stained.

I hope I am not meant to dress DS in black tie.
