Can someone give me a definitive guide to the order in which you put stuff on your face please?

So I always thought serum, then moisturiser, then foundation. I once bought some primer but haven't really used it because 4 layers of stuff on my face seems insane, and I don't know where it comes in the face-slap order. And then I was given some toner - where does that come in?

Now Sali Hughes here has baffled the hell out of me - whatever she's reviewing seems to be both a serum and a primer but she's putting it over her moisturiser.

Also - concealer first, then foundation? Or the other way round? I'm talking eye-bag concealer here.

Is there an ultimate guide out there somewhere?

Uptheanty · 16/03/2014 20:20

Sorry Blush

I only use concealer under my eyes- I usually apply before foundation- should I apply it after my foundation?

Sorry & thanks OP, very helpful thread Thanks

littleballerina · 16/03/2014 20:23

I need to be doing this. Some days I settle for a flannel and foundation. My skin hates me.

PenguinDancer · 16/03/2014 21:17

My moisturiser is a moisturiser and serum in one.

PenguinDancer · 16/03/2014 21:18

and I don't use foundation and I have no idea how to put it on my dry skin. Cakey mess!

scottishmummy · 17/03/2014 06:59

Every day routine in @10min and never on a train

Floisme · 17/03/2014 07:14

Some of these lists are insane. How can using so many products at once possibly have any effect?
No wonder the beauty industry is thriving.

scottishmummy · 17/03/2014 18:47

Hang on,I buy all the products I want.im not coerced or hoodwinked
I like make up, I like products,I like the routine
If make up industry thrives maybe it's indicative there is demand

ChubbyKitty · 17/03/2014 18:57

Cleanse, moisturise, blemish stick, concealer, bb cream, powder, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, blusher.

I use toner at night. I'm not really sure why. But I also moisturise with Savlon because it's the only thing I've found to keep my spots at bayBlush

Floisme · 17/03/2014 19:12

I get buying products because you like them and enjoy make up. But does anyone really think they all make a difference? All of them? I mean take serum: if it's so powerful, then how come we're still supposed to need a moisturiser?

scottishmummy · 18/03/2014 06:46

Yes There is A leap of faith in any product.no idea if they al work
Probably only need cleanse and moisturise
I know toner is contentious

PinkandTwinkly · 18/03/2014 08:26

For me

Cleanse
Tone
Serum
Moisturiser
Lipbalm

Then break to moisturise body, and apply hair products and dry hair. This gives time for moisturiser to soak in.

Primer
Eyeshadow if powder and dramatic (apply before foundation to clean up any fall)
Foundation
Concealer
Cream eyeshadow.
Cream blush
Face powder
Eye liner
Brown Powder
Brown Gel
Mascara
Liquid highlighter
Powder blush/bronze
Lipstick

Make up 'half only takes around five minutes)

If I'm doing special make up and using more products it takes longer.

PinkandTwinkly · 18/03/2014 08:28
  • brow powder/gel altho it is brown
AuntieMaggie · 18/03/2014 16:29

pink how do you get your foundation/undereye concealer not to mess up the eye make up and not an obvious gap?

PinkandTwinkly · 18/03/2014 19:18

AuntieMaggie

Just takes longer, and i have to use a sponge to get the foundation in. Using soft shadows and loose pigments i have to do it this way as I'm such a klutz it goes everywhere.

During the day for work i normally use Maybelline Colour Tattoo creams so just smudge them in after base.

bishbashboosh · 18/03/2014 19:37

If you have a good beauty routine before bed there is no need to do anything in the morning ! Straight to primer or bb cream, seriously! Why strip the natural oils from your skin?

Cleanse, exfoliate, tone and massage with facial oil pm

It really works for meWink

goodasitgets · 18/03/2014 19:49

Because you sweat overnight?! And your face is rubbing against a pillow

carmenelectra · 18/03/2014 19:51

This is very helpful as normally I have to google the order of products if its something new!

I do am splash face with cold water as clean from night before. Then moisturisers, eye cream though I often forget eye cream and not sure if should be before or after moisturiser?
Then I massage in facial oil.

Then primer
Foundatiom
Concealer
Eyebrows
Bronzer
Blusher
Eye make up
Lippy

Night time
I remove eye make ip
Cleanse
Moisturise
Facial oil

Moisture whole body with lotion or cream

I have used serum too but no idea where this was actually slotted in!

coffeeinbed · 18/03/2014 20:41

I do it in order of viscosity, from light to heavy.

I need to clean away sweat and semen.

PinkandTwinkly · 19/03/2014 02:43

I like to clean my face in the morning to wake me on. I shower so just use a cream wash to give a gentle clean.

I cleanse PM with a balm and my face isn't dirty so i don't need anything heavy duty am.

bishbashboosh · 19/03/2014 06:41

Ha ha sweat and semen, says me on my silk pillow with v mild perspiration
