Can someone give me a definitive guide to the order in which you put stuff on your face please?

So I always thought serum, then moisturiser, then foundation. I once bought some primer but haven't really used it because 4 layers of stuff on my face seems insane, and I don't know where it comes in the face-slap order. And then I was given some toner - where does that come in?

Now Sali Hughes here has baffled the hell out of me - whatever she's reviewing seems to be both a serum and a primer but she's putting it over her moisturiser.

Also - concealer first, then foundation? Or the other way round? I'm talking eye-bag concealer here.

Is there an ultimate guide out there somewhere?

THose of you with long lists - is that every day? Or special occasions?

And sorry - thank you, everyone. The majority are saying serum, moisturiser, foundation with maybe other stuff before/in between so I wasn't wildly off which is good to know.

Every pm
Double cleanse, exfoliating toner, hydrating toner, serum, moisturise. Takes 4 minutes
Every am
Cleanse, hydrating toner, moisturise (then makeup)

BrokenBananaTantrum · 16/03/2014 18:54

Do you have to wait in between the layers you out on?

goodasitgets · 16/03/2014 18:57

Not really. If I put the moisturiser on top before the serum is dry, it all sinks in anyway Grin

Am makeup I do weirdly, eye makeup first then moisturise and foundation so I can clear away any fallout from eyeshadow

Uptheanty · 16/03/2014 19:08

Why do we need serum? What does it do? ( please)

Also what toner, cleanser & primer work well together and is ok for quite sensitive skin?

Please & thank you

Uptheanty · 16/03/2014 19:09

And what is primer & what does it do?

You've already sorted out my bra - obviously I'm a work in progress Grin

ginmakesitallok · 16/03/2014 19:15

Jeesy peeps! I don't cleanse in the morning at all - face gets a wash in the shower

So I just do
Moisturiser
Foundation
Eyeliner
Mascara

None of your serum or primer or toner nonsense here....

themoneyone · 16/03/2014 19:20

Cleanser
Toner
Serum
Moisturiser

goodasitgets · 16/03/2014 19:26

I struggled really really badly with acne hence the skincare obsession!!
This is my skin now (no makeup)

Primer is effectively the equivalent of paint undercoat for your foundation. Can help it stay on longer and prevent shine. Personally I don't use it except for special occasions

Have banged on about it before but amphora aromatics echinacea moisturiser is lovely and under £5
At the moment I'm using Lancôme toner and REN omega 3 serum
Cleanser - (I have a selection) Blush
RMS coconut, Boots botanics cleansing balm, sanctuary hot cloth cleanser, balmology cleanser (gorgeous)

Uptheanty · 16/03/2014 19:31

Does so many products not cause your skin to break out?

coffeeinbed · 16/03/2014 19:32

never use toner.
Serum under moisturiser.

Primer under foundation.
never use concealer.

TessTackle · 16/03/2014 19:32

I do;

Cleanse,
Tone
Moisturise
Eye gel
Concealer
Foundation
Eyeliner
Mascara
Contouring
Bronze
Blush
Eyebrows

goodasitgets · 16/03/2014 19:33

Nope. See above post for photo. I don't have a spot on my skin now after years of struggling with it.
It's getting the right products though for YOUR skin. Layering products isn't an issue as long as your skin gets on with them all
I could give someone all my skincare and it could be totally wrong for them

Uptheanty · 16/03/2014 19:36

Your skin looks fab good, so it's trial & error to begin with...sounds expensive!

Kopparbergkate · 16/03/2014 19:37

Ok, I can understand: cleanse, tone, serum, moisterise, foundation. BUT I don't ever use foundation, I just use a tinted moisturiser so where does the primer go....?

goodasitgets · 16/03/2014 19:39

Basically I read caroline hirons, took the basic principles and looked for alternatives!
So my cleanser is maybe a tenner max, hydrating toner was twelve quid off eBay. Exfoliating toner I've used bravura at right pounds. Moisturiser is a fiver. The REN serum is the most expensive. If I have money I might use a more expensive brand

iwouldgoouttonight · 16/03/2014 19:40

I'm not a proper woman. What is serum and what does it do? I do cleanse, moisturise, foundation, concealer if spotty.

I am 40 and probably look 40. Will I look younger if I do serum and things??

goodasitgets · 16/03/2014 19:42

This is the serum I use. It seems to moisturise better than a moisturiser alone, sort of gives a glow. I only use it at night, dry skin could use it more

cathers · 16/03/2014 19:47

In the pm I cleanse twice, then night serum, then moisturise.
In the am, cleanse, moisturise, primer and then make up.
I have been using Estée Lauder advanced night serum for a couple of months now and really rate it

HandsOffMyGazBaz · 16/03/2014 19:47

Good as.. your skin looks fab..im a Caroline lover too but ive fallen off the wagon, I just can't afford stuff right now! How long did you follow the routine for? Do you have a before pic?

ProfondoRosso · 16/03/2014 19:48

Cleanse with Avène cold cream bar in shower
Moisturiser or facial oil
BB cream
Eyebrows
Mascara
Blusher
Highlighter
Lip balm or lipstick

goodasitgets · 16/03/2014 19:59

Struggling for close ups because I was always covered in makeup or avoiding photos Grin
Been doing it for about 5/6 months
You can see a bit here my chin breakouts and patchy skin

AuntieMaggie · 16/03/2014 20:00

Cleanse in shower
Moisturiser and eye cream
Concealer
Foundation
Loose powder
Blusher
Maybe eye shadow and/or eye liner
Mascara
Lippy

I only use under eye concealer so it wouldn't get wiped off by my foundation as I don't use foundation under my eyes... I only use a primer on my eye lids when I wear eye shadow
