I'm looking for a 1950s inspired dress........help!

I'm going to a wedding in the summer and would love to try something a little different. I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and would love to wear something 1950s inspired.

Am thinking 'Audrey Hepburn', fitted top half, flared out bottom half and a netted skirt.

Can anyone suggest where to start looking?

Thanks for the reply!

i've ordered from Deadly is the Female before & it was excellent!

Just received this and it fits beautifully. Now I just need to sneak a pale blue petticoat and the collectif trench coat past DH Blush When is payday again?!

Latraviata · 20/03/2014 18:09

That dress is lovely calling-its very similiar to a pale pink one I got last year for a friends wedding. I went for the white poppy Isabella as have never tried that style of dress before.

Which colour in the trench did you go for? I have them in the black and the red but really want the pale blue one too.

CallingAllEngels · 20/03/2014 20:21

I am coveting the ice blue....very summery and would look great with my new dress/high waisted cropped jeans/retrolicious bicycle dress/rose patterned tea dress (my, I have bought a lot of clothes the last few months!)but am going to check my bank balance first!

Am on duty at school disco tomorrow and am dressing up in this with black petticoat:

Oh there's so many to choose from, this weekend I'm going to make my choice and order.

I'm just worried about where to order my petticoat from and how will I know what length to buy?

I bought this little bargain today, cheapest new hell bunny frock that I've seen, www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351028396594?var=620265198170&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 There were all different sizes and styles on offer. It's a bit more floral than most of my dresses but I have a christening and wedding reception coming up so I think it will come in handy :)

I bought a Lady V petticoat and it is beautifully soft, but not very pouffy, if that makes sense.

I then bought one from ebay that is made of much stiffer fabric and it gives a much better shape, but it has a satin underskirt with it to stop it being itchy.

26" petticoat length seems to be standard and fitted well under the dress I bought. I've attached a pic so you can see the stickyoutness of the frock (this is the ebay one)

I'm looking for a 1950s inspired dress........help!

Oh God, the state of DD's bedroom! (only place in the house with a full length mirror). Don't judge me!

Well my LadyV Isabella dress arrived and while it is nice its not a patch on their swing dresses. Its unlined and the skirt is not as full. So will be rethinking what to wear for our anniversary.

CallingAllEngels · 22/03/2014 19:31

That's a shame latraviata. I wasn't sure about the neckline and the bow on the isabella. My swing dress is lovely though not lined either.

have been looking at their hepburn dresses but unsure about sizing. By the waist measurement I should get a 14 as the 12 will be just too small but worried it will then be too big across the chest and gape at the back (am only a 36 bra). Though I could always get it altered...aargh, not sure (and will have to hide parcel from dh as have bought so many clothes this month!).

Going to exchange the trench for a 12 as the 14 is too big.

Glad I found this thread! Think I'll be ordering myself the colectif trench coat for summer! Grin

FabMum1 · 22/03/2014 21:34

I'm loving this thread ladies

I've had a good look and I think I've decided on a floral swing dress. But can't decide which knew. I'm quite pale so am worried that the pastel ones will wash me out.

What do you think, any suggestions? I'd prefer it not to be black

Aargh! Someone needs to take my credit card away from me!

Just ordered this

ladyvlondon.com/Orange-Poppy-Daisy-Day-Dress/

and this

ladyvlondon.com/Blue-Butterfly-Day-Dress/

and this petticoat t

ladyvlondon.com/Ivory-Petticoat/

to go underneath my birdcage swing dress (my black one doesn't really go and is too long - Hell Bunny one - but the LadyV one is shorter and looks a little less 'outy' iykwim).

Watching To Catch a Thief right now and admiring all the lovely clothes!

I have the first series of Mad Men waiting to be watched! Trying to finish the last series of Doctor Who before I get started on it though. Last night was channel hopping and saw Blanlings on BBC1 - also great clothes, hair and makeup...makes me wonder why I ever wear jeans! and then I look at my toddler and remember

Actually I almost just sent the trench back without exchaning as I am wondering how practical itwill be with a 2 year old and hopefully another in the works the next year. Won't get much wear, but guess I juyst have to see it as a long term investment (plus, there was article on Mailonline this morning about how pastel colour coats are in this year, so guess I was ahead of the trend Grin ). Changed my mind and have requested the smaller size though.

HeirToTheIronThrone · 24/03/2014 10:27

I see you already have some great ideas, but just to add - Oh My Honey (as linked by fated above is great, Louise made my wedding dress and I adored it. I had a petticoat made by Petticoats A Plenty underneath it.

Otherwise, I have just bought myself one of the 'Audrey' dresses from Lindybop for a wedding reception as well. They're fab value and I don't think actually need a petticoat as there's lots of material in the skirt.
